We live in Chandler and are planning a weekend north to snow. We want to build a snowman and sled down a hill. We have never been to the snow here, so we don't know where one of the closest and best hills for boys ages 3 & 6 would be. Any favorite locations for sledding and places to stay (motel or cabin etc.)? We have snow clothes, but no sleds yet.

we just came from the snow...there is so much up past Payson. If you go to Forest Lakes I think they have about 3 feet! It's only a 2 hour drive frome here. Christopher Creek is where our cabin is and it had 2 feet of snow, there are a few small hills around there and some great cabins to stay at. Here is a webcam to the snow just 10 minutes of there in Forest lakes: http://www.forestlakesweather.com/webcam/livepic.jpg

On the flipside, if you want a real snow hill/snow park, you can check out Cinch Hook Snow Park- also north of Payson: http://www.azcabins.com/what_to_do.htm
It's fun, but get there early, it gets busy this time of year and if you park on the road they will tow your car, just be aware of that!! There's a small parking lot there you can use.

and nearby cabins, http://www.azcabins.com/cabins.htm
(don't let it fool you, it is NOT a resort, but it's an okay place to stay). A bit out-dated, but it's been a long time since I have been there!!

Let me know if you have any other questions! I can help. And for sleds, check out craigslist.org or costco. If you go to a sporting goods store you're looking at $20-$30 for a decent sled, maybe more!

Hi K.,
Flagstaff has some great sledding parks right off the highway. They are both a little past the ski resort. You can get maps to both of them on the internet. They also have maps to them at some of the gas stations in Flagstaff on the way up there. There is one gas station that carries sleds, gloves etc. and they have maps also. It is on the right hand side of the road as you head up towards the ski resort. You can't miss it. Sports Chalet also has sleds on sale right now. Hope that helps. We have lots of fun up there, the kids love it.

I grew up in the snowflake/show low area & we would always go to old sunrise to sled. I still take my children there. The snow gets pretty deep & it has some really good hills to go down plus bathrooms. It usually has a couple of other people there but it is still way fun. It also is a good place to hike around and the kids can make snowman off to the side. My daughter loves to go here. If you don't want to go all that way there are tons of little hills outside of payson before you get to heber. Plus heber is always covered in snow. In heber there is several hotels you could stay at. Hope this helps a little.

Hi, K. -
Last year we took my 4 year old for her first snow experience. At the advice of another mother, we went to Flagstaff and stayed at Little America. The hotel is not horribly expensive, and the best part is they have a huge open area in the forest behind the hotel. An absolute winter wonderland for kids. Perfect to go out in the snow, get wet and cold, and just be able to walk back into the hotel, stand by the fire, have hot cocoa in the coffee shop. It was great. We wanted to go sledding, too, and the concierce was able to give us directions to a local school (high school, I think) that has a field with hills on two sides - perfect for sledding. One side is a short hill for the littler ones, and one side is a bit steeper hill for more adventuresome sledders. My four year old went down the small hill once or twice, then decided to do the big hill. She loved it. We had a great time.
Wherever you end of going, have fun!!

Hi K.,
We went up past Strawberry (n of Payson) up on the rim another 15 miles or so to Clints wells! they have some small hills for sledding. We had a blast the first time we went up after Christmas but then we went up again this past Sunday and the highway patrol said they would give out parking tickets! so we found another place but when we drove by again lots of people were there with no tickets! my son is 8 and he had a blast!! i got one of those 2 person sleds at costco for about $20! not sure if they still have them but you could try big 5 or sports authority!
Have Fun!

We have gone in the past to Flagstaff. All the hotels there will give you info on the closest snow parks. There are some that plow roads and then charge a car fee and then some that don't but then there is no upkeep. As for sleds, check the walmart there or you can find them at the gas stations up there too. Have fun!
