Need Snack Ideas for When I Go Back to Work with Morning Sickness

Hello! I am 7.5 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing morning (actually all day) sickness for nearly two weeks. I have been OK up to this point because I can bring my son to my mom's when I feel sick, but I go back to work next week (I am a second grade teacher). I don't want to tell people at work until at least 10.5 weeks, when they will listen for a heartbeat again. Do you have ideas on snacks to have at work that won't be super distracting as I teach? An empty stomach triggers sickness every time! One thing, I have a student with a severe nut allergy so I cannot have any snack with nuts or were made in the same place as nuts. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Ginger snap cookies worked great for me. They can be really hard and crunchy so I would break them into smaller pieces. Someone also mentioned the preggo pops. They not only have lollipops but also hard candy which is much less obvious when you are teaching.

Another thing I found is that if I took my prenatal vitamin in the morning my morning sickness was much worse. It worked much better for me to take it at lunch or dinner when my stomach wasn't empty.

The things that worked for me were baby carrots, grapes and mandarin oranges.

I was horribly sick with my daughter all day, every day, until month 5 - so I can relate.
I started carrying around Saltine crackers with me at all times. My favorite thing to eat during my pregnancy was croissants - and it seemed to help me with the nausea.

I also liked Luna bars - which I actually cut up into bite size pieces and kept in a tupperware in my classroom so that I could just pop a piece into my mouth when no one was looking. High in folic acid, vitamins, and protein - and yummy, on top of it.

Lastly, I also started making fruit smoothies and bringing them to work with me in my water bottle (but an aluminum, insulated coffee cup would work better). Then, I could load them with protein powder, vitamins, fruit, yogurt, etc. as I saw fit, and drink them as if I was drinking coffee or water, and no one is any the wiser. They fill you up, pack some nutrition in, and best, were easy to keep down. :)

Good luck and enjoy your school year!

Hi there-

Congratulations!

I'm not quite 13 weeks and the MS for me is finally starting to subside so I share your pain. :)

Few things that helped me...Get up about 3-4am and drink an ensure or eat some crackers. Seemed to help fill me up a bit more for the morning. Then I didn't really 'eat' (cuz I couldn't), until about 8am--I would have crackers or animal crackers or toast or a bagel at the ready. I also found drinking plenty of water, (which I didn't do with my first pregnancy), helped-hard to do though when you're teaching and not wanting to run to the bathroom constantly I know! Also-huge helps was Gatorade. I think sometimes the MS is caused by de-hyrdation, the Gatorade always helped a lot. Sipping Coke or Sprite or ginger ale helped too.

A Friend told me that natural food stores like "whole foods" carry MS products-like ginger lozenges and swears by them. I can't stand ginger though, so I didn't try them. Or lollipos or jolly ranchers or peppermints help too and you can just have them handy.

Stay hydrated, always have something at the ready to eat...and although it stinks, sometimes throwing up actually helps. Not easy when your teaching a class though I'm sure.

Good luck.

Cinnamon and ginger are great for nausa. You can get some candied ginger at the grocery store and place it on your mouth like a hard candy. You can also keep cinnamon grahms or ginger snaps in your desk. I also recommend applesauce with cinnamon sugar, not the pre-made from the store because that has artificial cinnamon. Peppermint tea will also help.
Good luck morning sickness is so frustrating, hopefully it will go away soon.

I use Ginger Ale or ginger tea. You can also munch on crystalized ginger, but it's not the best tasting and is usually made in a place that also processes nuts. Lastly, You can also take vitamin B6, but I would check with your doctor on the max dose (in mg) per day. Both of these helped me tremendously with previous pregnancy morning sickness.

S.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Apple slices and cheddar cheese worked well for me when I was pregnant with my first and sick all the time.

I also would pack a little bag of cereal with me to work so I could munch. Mini shredded wheat or Quaker Oat Squares where my favorites.

By the way they now make Bite Size Saltine Crackers!! Not all stores carry them... but I was excited when I found them, since regular saltine crackers can be so crumbly! :)

Hope you feel better soon!

For me I used sea bands. They are found at Walgreens and most major retailers. They are bands that go on your wrist at pressure points and help with morning sickenss. I had a banking desk job during my first pregnancy. Foodwise stick to soda crackers and bland food. For me smelly foods were a trigger.

I'm 6 weeks and right now I'm loving cheese nips and nilla wafers, depending on whether I want something salty or sweet. Saltines get old really fast. I think the idea of having a smoothie or other fortified drink is a good idea too. Last pregnancy I did Carnation Instant breakfast when I couldn't deal with the idea of eating food. You'd have to check the boxes regarding nut allergy.

Good luck!

This is what I did when I was teaching with morning sickness -- I opened a can of Coke each morning, and slowly sipped it for hours. It needs to be flat and room-temp. If I did that, by 1:00 I could eat lunch -- or a snack -- and keep it down.

I also took Unisom before bed, which is safe, and also helped with the morning sickness.

I was fortunate that my MS was minimal with my son. I heard wonderful things about Preggi Pops and bought some from my siter-in-law when she was PG. She said they worked great and ordered more when she ran out. I pasted a link below....

Crackers
Pretzels
Dried Fruit
Fresh Fruit
Veggies
Whole Wheat/Grain Bread
Cheese (if you can keep it cold)
Hard Boiled Eggs (if you can keep it cold)

Things that are not bite size I would just cut/break up before school so you can quickly snack on them whenever you feel the need. You will have to check the back of packages to find the brand(s) not made in the same place as nuts.

I know with me, had morning sickness all day through whole pregnancy, I had a very short list of food that I could just keep down so hopefully you can find something that works for you.

I was working when I was pregnant with our youngest and had that empty stomach sickness...You could try a bag of cherios or oyster crackers. I usually also ate potato chips, but those might be too distracting. Cherios and crackers are small, and you could eat them a few at a time or grab a handful when you have a moment. Plus Cherios aren't super loud crunchy. I never tried them, but maybe preggo pops might work? I just always munched all day. Good luck!

I am 10 weeks pregnant and have had the morning sickness to and posted a question on here. I got a response with a really neat articale about how eating kidney beans everytime you feel nausaus helps and it does. I think i posted the question last week if you want to try and find it and read the article. It was very interesting and has helped me. Plus i went out and bought the wrist bands you can wear and those do actually seem to help to. Other wise i would just say crackers, animal crackers, cheese, veggies anything to keep food in your stomach. Good luck, it is tough having to work and be sick but as you know it will get better. and Congratulations!

Hi S.,

I am a teacher too. A friend of mine told me to suck on Wintergreen Altoids when I had my little girl. They were my life saver!!! I had a box in my purse, in the car, in my desk at school, and one at home. They are a little hard to find, so when I would find them I would pick up a couple of them. Congrats!!!
