He needs to network. He needs to reach out to people and connect. I re-entered the workplace after being a stay at home mom for 10 years. In the process of securing references I contacted a former boss who knew of a job that her former job had open. I got the job. My husband has been laid off twice within the past 3 years and the three jobs he has held during that time he got with friends/contacts. From what I've heard, getting a job by simply sending in an application is unlikely to net you a job. He needs to get out of the house and talk to people. He'll probably feel better too. Good-luck.

Employment agency - he needs to register with one.

Also, he needs to stop JUST applying to the jobs he wants & apply to everything out there, whether or not it's with a bank.

IMO, if he hasn't done both of these things, then he's not looking as hard as he could be.

I don't have a lead for you, but my husband was unemployed for 19 months right after we had our 2nd baby. Although nice that he stayed home with her, VERY stressful time of our lives financially! He ended up taking a job 50% of his previous pay but just to get going again. We're still struggling but his mental health is better working and contributing again. L., I just said a prayer for your family and that he finds a job VERY VERY soon. We're all with you sister.

If he wants a conventional job, then he needs to network big time - join BNI or Chamber of Commerce, do job fairs, etc. The unemployment department in many cities often hold workshops. He could look into developing new skills through free workshops at the unemployment division or the library, or he could look at new ways to market his skills in other fields besides banking.

Another option is to start his own business - I work with a lot of people who want to control their lives and finances instead of being at the mercy of companies who lay them off. That's happened to me a couple of times. There are ways to do this without investing a ton of money. I have a lot of colleagues in Chicago who help people do this so there is a built-in network. If you want to connect and get more info, let me know.

You have several good answers here. My suggestion is to take a job, any job, to get out and among people. We're not living in an economy where we can apply for only something in our area of expertise. Taking a job, even for much lower pay, shows initiative and commitment, which could translate to 'experience' on a resume. Another suggestion would be to volunteer a little time every week; you just never know with whom you might be in conversation, and where that might lead. These are tough times, no doubt about it.

I agree with looking outside banking as well. If he was in mortgage, he may have a sales background, same as private banker. You don't mention what area of a bank he worked. He can stress the customer service he provided and move on from there. A former co-worker recently started working at a financial serices company (not a bank) and loves it. And she has a ton of opportunity for advancement as she learns more. My husband just started a job in a contract position so totally outside what he did before. And his not working was extremeley stressful for us.
