What about U2's Pride In the Name of Love? They sing about Martin Luther King and peaceful protest, Civil Rights Movement, etc.

You could try any of the songs from School House Rock. They talk about the Boston Tea Party, How a bill becomes a law, the planets,etc. There is a new School House Rock coming out also about Earth called Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. I believe Mitchell Musso sings it. These are the only songs I hear lately since we have the DVD in the car.

The only ones I can think of are Elton John's Candle in the Wind (Marilyn Monroe) or England's Rose (Princess Diana). Maybe this will help I am not really sure what you are looking for. The only old one I can think of is the Davy Crocket song. Good luck with your assignment.

Hi A., How about the Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald sung by Enkleburt Humperdink? Forgive my spelling but it is about the loss of a ship in the great lakes...a true story. You could also look up Billy Don't be a Hero, a song about a young man that went to war and never came home.

Hi A., I'm not sure what age group your "audience" is but there are some fantastic ideas that pair with children's books. There are lots of songs too - most of the ones I know are child-friendly (like, I know an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly, etc...)

The one song that pops into my mind is the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. It's kind of sad if you're using it with kids, but it's a lovely ballad about a ship that sank in the Great Lakes. The song is very descriptive and you could probably come up with some good art projects to go with it. Best of luck!

Charlie Daniels...Devil Went Down to Georgia is a great one. Irish have tons of neat ballads with historical stories and context. Childrens -- Molly Mallone.
