Need Help to Stop My House (Dog?) from Stinking...

Ok, let me start by saying I'm about 8 months pregnant, so MAYBE a little tiny bit moody. I've entered the "nesting" phase and I can't seem to stop cleaning and organizing. ANYWAY, my house stinks - at least I think it does. When I get out of the shower in the morning and go to the kitchen to let our dogs out (2 German Shepherds), it stinks and it bothers me.

Our dogs were just groomed a week ago and it still stunk. We clean up after them in the yard almost daily (unless it's raining). The smell isn't of dog poop/urine as they don't mess in the house at all. The smell is just...dog. This morning, the smell was bothering me so much that I scrubbed the kitchen floor - twice. Do other dog owners have this problem? I swear, I go to peoples houses that have large dogs and it doesn't smell.

We are taking the dogs to the vet tomorrow for their annual check-up and I'm going to ask the vet what she thinks. I know it's one dog more than the other as my hands smell after I pet her. Is it possible that some dogs just have worse "Doggie Odor" than others?

Does anyone have any great products or ideas on how to eliminate the odor? We brush the dog, clean her ears and keep the area that they sleep in clean. I'm getting to the point that I want to get rid of stinky-dog before the baby comes in a month. And, I know that's not really a solution. It's driving me crazy, though.

Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the great responses. We took Raven to the vet on Saturday and she pretty much told us that there isn't any medical reason for the odor. Her teeth are good, her skin is good and there's nothing wrong with her. Some dogs DO have odor worse than others and Raven's skin is a lot more oily than our other dog. She said we could TRY some shampoo for oily skin, but no guarantee.

So, I just hope that when I deliver the baby, my sensitive nose will go away.

Thanks again!

There is pet deodorant spray that you can spray on the dog. My one kitten came from a home that treated him badly and he stunk badly like a litter box. Washed the poor kitten 6 times even with deskunker and couldn't get the smell out.

Finally, I bought a pet deodorant spray. The kitten smelled like peaches and litter box for a day (yuck) but the next day the kitten had the baby kitten smell and nothing else.

Sometimes pet hair & smells can be trapped in dirty venting inside your house. Maybe get your HVAC ductwork cleaned?

LOL, you remind me of myself when I am pregnant! I HATE my dog when I am pregnant or nursing and TOLERATE him when I am not. With both pregnancies, the dog's life was within inches of being taken by my hand because of the stink! Now that I'm not pregnant (and nursing), I can't smell a thing and shhh, I actually like the dog. Don't you feel like a wolf mother who is protecting her litter?! Just don't do what I did and buy a new house, that just ends up stinking within hours too! :)

We got a puppy when I was pregnant with my first. I remember the smell being TERRIBLE. I put in a bunch of air fresheners. When friends would come over, they commented on the nice smell of the air fresheners. I never smelled the air fresheners...just the gross puppy smell. Everyone else could not smell the puppy unless they sniffed up close to him, but to me it permeated the house. It was cured when the baby was born and I lost that pregnant extreme sensitivity to smell. Why it's just the bad smells, I don't know. :)

How are their teeth? I have always had greyhounds. They do not smell doggy at all, don't even really smell bad when they are wet. I had one that started to smell kind of yucky, and I couldn't figure out why. Her teeth way in the back were getting yucky, so when she would lick herself it would make her whole body smell yucky. She had her teeth cleaned by the vet and she went back to smelling pretty good (for a dog).

Yes some dogs do have worse "doggie odor" than others. I brush my dog outside everyday & wipe him down with dog wipes or a wash cloth. This substantially reduces the hair in the house and the odor. I also wipe out his crate a couple times a week. I hate the doggie odor so it's worth it to me to spend some extra time cleaning him and his living quarters. If bathing isn't helping it could be something else like impacted anal glands. Really gross, causes a terrible odor. Does your dog drag its bottom across the floor? If so the vet or groomer can help.

Sorry I don't have any real fixes but I had 2 greatdanes (just lost one to cancer) and they def smelled diff from eachother. It sometimes depended on what they ate or what they were washed with.

You might want to consider trying diff food or have the groomer wash w/a diff shampoo. You can also try the method used to remove skunk stench from a dog after they've been sprayed. Douce the dog in tomato juice and let it sit for atleast 20 min. and then rinse.

Congrats on your baby to come!

How is the skin on your stinky dog? One of our dogs always smells bad, but she has terrible allergies and it does a number on her skin. She has severe seborrhea which causes her unique "scent." If it's her skin that is causing the odor, she will likely need a special shampoo from the vet. The products used by the groomer could actually be making it worse. Our vet just prescribed some new prescription shampoo and spray for our dog, and it makes a world of difference in her skin.
