Need Help in Finding a Way to Produce More Milk!!!!

I am mom to 3 week old twin girls and can not make enough milk for both girls. One can handle the formula just fine the other spits up every drop of formula we put in her, we have tried several different kinds of formula and really want BOTH of my girls to get the benefit of breast milk and was just wondering if anyone had ideas on how to produce more.

What can I do next?

Hey there. CONGRATULATIONS!
The ONLY two things that helped me out a LOT were Fenugreek and decaf iced tea! Somehow, either by itself helped but together was awesome!
Good luck!

I had trouble with my milk supply, too. The advice that I got from the hospital breastfeeding center was to take Fenugreek. I know someone mentioned that earlier, too. They said there are no side effects (I didn't experience any either). It made a HUGE difference in the amount of milk I got. I went from pumping 1/4 oz. after each feeding to pumping 4 oz. after each. They also told me to pump for 15 minutes after each feeding and feed him what I pumped. Anyway, if you are interested in trying it, this is how they told me to do it: 3 capsules 3 times a day for the first week, 2 capsules 3 times a day for the second week, and 1 capsule 3 times a day for the third week, and then you're done. It really helped us out!

I hope you get your answer fast. I did read someone posted something that really works and I can not remember what it was. Maybe a health food place can help you. My step daughter and her one sons got really sick in the hospital and it was just allergic to formula. She then gave him goals milk or soybean. He was so sick and finally my ex said you know what? You did the same thing and you were allergic to milk. So watch it close. G. W.

You may want to check out the web site at www.motherof7.com. A friend of mine has 7 children, of which two are a set of twins. She has created several different educational videos about breastfeeding, including breastfeeding twins. I have 2 sets of twins, and never was able to produce enough milk to feed both twins without supplement, but I did give them all I had for 3 months for the benefit of the antibodies. All 4 are healthy as can be now. For the one with the spit-up problem, you should talk to the doctor about Nutramigen, a special formula for reflux. My night nanny had a lot of experience with multiples and said almost all the ones she had taken care of did better with that formula. We had to give it to one of my first twins. Also have the baby upright as much as possible; maybe at least 20 minutes after feeding to give time for the milk to be digested - just as you did for yourself if you had reflux. Good luck. It does get better.

Hi M.! Have you tried Fenugreek supplements yet? It's an herbal supplement that helps promote milk production.
Also, and I know this is easier said than done, make sure you get time to relax each day. The more you worry about it, the more your body tends to stress and that can reduce your milk production. It's a vicious cycle.

You may also want to call Kay at The Nesting Place in Grapevine. She's a lactation consultant and should have some great tips for you... she'll at least ease your mind a bit. Her number is ###-###-####.

Hope this helps.

Stay hydrated! There are herbal supplements as well that are suppose dto increase breast milk production, but the best way to increase your milk supply is to pump in between feedings. The more you feed the more your body begins to create milk. Call your hospitals lactation consultant or call Le Leche League for more help!

When I had my little boy, the lactation consultant first suggested MORE REST! Followed by regular pumping and nursing, and plenty of fluids and good foods. I also took Fenugreek. I know a lot of people have great results from Mother's Milk tea or tonic.

M.,

rest, fluids and self care are sooooo hard with twins, but I agree that it is necessary. Also frequently complete emptying of the breast. If you are relying on a pump to do this, you need a hospital grade pump and should be pumping every 2-3 hours at least with twins. Actually the baby is much better than any pump at completely emptying your breasts, but if you are trying to do both breast and bottle they often just don't suck long enough or vigourously enough at the breast to produce the increased amounts you need to avoid bottles. In hospital practice I would always have moms of twins begin with both feeding and pumping in the hospital to get thier milk to come in in adequate amounts.
There are some herbs that will help significantly. I would be happy to do a consult with you and help you to establish the babies at the breast. It is actually easier than bottle feeding for twins because you can feed them at the same time.
