Need Help Finding a Good Orthopedic Doctor for My Daughter

I spent 4 hours today in the E.R. with my daughte yesterday. She got pushed down at school and hurt her wrist. Turns out she broke both the radius and ulna bones and actually fractured the radius. She had to have the bone set and splinted until the swelling goes down . Next week we will get her to the Orthopedic doctor to get it casted. If it doesn’t heal properly, were looking at surgery to put pins in the bone. Crossing my fingers it doesn’t come to that! I live in Livermore and am looking for any suggestions on a good orthopedic doctor.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the responses! With the advice of my daughter's pediatrician, I took her to Tri Valley Orthopedics right here in Livermore. After they took a look at the x-rays taken by the hospital after my daughter's arm had been set, they were able to see that the bone still had not been manipulated(set) into the right spot. That wasn't the only problem, though. The doctor had put a temporary splint on my daughter with her wrist at an angle, which I found out from the Orthopedic doctor was the wrong thing to do. Needless to say, we ended up in surgery to re-manipulate the bone and then put pins in it. At this point, my daughter still has a temorary splint on because the pins are sticking out of the skin. We will visit the dr again on Tuesday afternoon to have them removed and them finally a cast for 6 weeks. I have been homeschooling her so she doesn't fall behind on schoolwork, and it also still gives her perfect attendance for the year. She is very much looking forward to going back to school later this week.

Hi A.,
http://www.pediorthosv.com/bios.htm, here is a link to Dr. Kanel who is a pediatric Orthopedic doctor. He's taken care of my younger daughters and grandsons. Living in Livermore, you might find it a bit far for you, but call his office and maybe they can refer you to one closer if you wish.

Good Luck.

Hi A.,

I have a fabulous doctor I would highly recommend. Dr. Douglas Abeles in Castro Valley. You may also want to look into Dr. Andrew Stein in San Leandro who may be a better fit for your daughters case. Dr. Stein is incredible. I was able to save my husband's finger tips when they were seperated by an accident. My husband has full range, motion and feeling to all fingers that were injured. Good Luck!

We traveled to Santa Rosa from Paradise, CA to see Douglas Abbott M.D. He is very good and good bedside manner. He used a stainless steel plate and 7 screws in my husband's ankle. I hope your daughter escapes that but he is a great doc.

Dr. Hoffinger at Oakland Children's Hospital is wonderful. My son was diagnosed with hip dysplasia so I did a lot of research before choosing one since we were facing the possibility of hip surgery. He has an office in Walnut Creek and Oakland. He is the director of children's ortho.
Goodluck.

If your willing to travel a little to Orinda or Berkley
Dr. Kirk Jensen in Orinda or Dr. Robert Eppley in Berkley
are both very good . For myself I have had the need to research the best orthopedics in the bay area and these 2
are best . Dr.Eppley is the team dr for many of the UC
Berkley teams . Dr.Jensen is very friendly and really is
up to date in orthopedic surgery .

My husband was a rugby player for years and through his MANY injuries, as well as those of his teammates, they all went to George Tischenko, 2405 Shadelands Dr # 3, Walnut Creek, CA 94598,###-###-####, muir-orthopedic.com.

One of my husband's friends had an ankle injury that was so severe that it was almost amputated at the ER. However, Dr. Tischenko was able to save the ankle, and although my husband's friend no longer plays rugby, he does go running! Dr. Tischenko is a pretty great ortho.

I hope this helps and your daughter has a speedy recovery!

Catherine

Hi A.,
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's injury.
It has been many years (at least 15) so I am not sure if he is still in practice, but I took my daughter, who was a competitive gymnast, to an orthopedic surgeon/doctor in Walnut Creek named Dr. Loosli. I would highly recommend him. He specialized in sports medicine, was very thorough and well respected in the medical field.
Hope this will help. M.

I assume you have a pediatric physician for your child. Have you asked for his or her opinion or are you not confident in that physician? Do you know other children near you who have had to use an orthopaedist? You are better off seeking the opinion of those near you, someone who has been practicing for some time and has a good track record. You might also be able to check those in your area on-line. One doesn't just get a specialist, you need to get an appointment which is not always easy on short notice so make those arrangements now. Good luck. G. V

YESS!! Dr. Rab at UCD Medical in Sac. My good friend's son had all sorts of complications at birth and they thought he would never walk... especially after surgery. He is walking and his Dr. is Dr. Rab... My daughter had him for surgery just last year. When a cyst showed up in the knee cap, the immediately sent her to him; I was told he was one of the best.

Hope this helps.

I went through a very similar thing w/ my daughter, now 14, about 3 yrs ago. I would recommend Dr. Leo Semkiw in San Jose (2430 Samaritan Drive),###-###-####. My daughter broke both the bones of her leg (at the ankle), broke through the growth plate, and did end up needing to have a screw surgically placed. All went very smoothly and she is good as new. Good luck

I have used Dr. Reginald McCoy for the past 26 years and absolutely LOVE him. I only stopped going to him because we switched to Kaiser. I have had 3 surgeries with him and absolutely love him. My Mom also used him when she broke her elbow. He's on Dardanelli Lane, near Los Gatos Community Hospital.

Sorry for the delyed response I was out of town & just read your request. I had back surgery, removal of a bulged disc this past June. Dr Talwar in San Ramon was awesome. He is located at an office right next to the SR regional medical hospital. He did a great job, a very small scar & I was fully recovered 4 months later. ###-###-####. His assistant is Giselle & she was also great. May your daughter heal quickly!

I recommend Leo Semkiw in San Jose ###-###-####. A couple of years ago, my friend fell on the tennis court and shattered her wrist. He set it and used this metal device that had pins going into the wrist, I think, to help control the movement and position. Today she's playing tennis and is painfree. He also operated on my husband's knee and has operated on several other people that I know with great success. Good luck!
