She has issues with constpation and is on miralax everyday. Long story short we stoped giving it for a couple days and now she is backed up and hasn't pooped for days. She says she has to go but refuses to sit on the potty and will stand and clinch her butt cheeks. So I offered to put a pamper on her and she still clinched. I started the miralax up again 2 days ago and have tried warm baths but she will not let it out. The pharmacy told us to try pedialax but we have the fruit punch kind and it has to go in 6 oz of liquid and she can taste it and wont drink it. Any other suggestions?

Oh and she's been potty trained and in panties for months.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice! I ended up inserting a suppository and a couple hours later she went. Still in pain and tearful but she went. So I'm going to doctor her little red butt up and make sure she's getting her miralax everyday as instructed by her pedi. I'm also going to look into fiber gummies and fiber friendly foods. Thanks again!

Feed her fiber rich foods/snacks and keep her fluids (water) up.
Prune juice, prunes, raisins, etc.
Too much fruit juice or cider sometimes gives my son a bit of diarrhea.
Veer away from foods that bind (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast).
Benefiber has an unflavored powder that can be added to milk/juice/water/soup/etc without thickening - she won't even know you added it.
Some exercise can help, too. Keep her running and jumping around if you can.

2 years old is still really young to potty train. I think once you put diapers back on her, she will eventually let it out. Also, try prune juice.

I agree with Sami. Her poop isnt hard because she's taken the mirilax, so do a glycerine suppository and put her on the pot, read a book, take her mind off of the fact that she's actually having to Sh*t, putting too much focus on it is what is freaking her out, she is not relaxing and has decided to hold instead. (been there done that)
Insert the suppository, as it melts it will give her an urge to go, you might want to get some vaseling slathered on to her anus while putting the suppository in.. chances are with her holding it's already a little sore and irritated in that area.
Now, calmly sit her on the pot and distract her with a favorite book or story... run a bath, keep her mind off of the fact that she is there to poop, sometimes the noise of the bathwater will help. If she likes baths let her know after she poops she can play in the tub for a little while to clean her bottom :)

My son has on and off issues with constipation. When it's been a few days I give him a suppository. He poops within minutes and it's much smoother for him. I would try that for her. It's all natural. I would not use it to often as you should really get down to the root of the problem. She's probably scared to poop on the potty. I have gotten my suppositories at Target.

Good luck!

My daughter had the same problem that stemmed from food allergies that she had as an infant. First, make sure she is not allergic to foods such as milk, eggs and wheat. These type of food allergies tend to make kids constipated more than anything else. Second, keep up the Mira-lax two to three times per day. Thirdly, feed her foods such as spinach, kale and chard with lunch and dinner. Finally, be very patient with her on the toilet. Read her books, rub her arm, and/or offer her a treat for "doing such a great job"!...AS a last resort, giver her an enema as directed by her physician. Good luck with this and I would be interested to see what solution works. Take care.

Does she like Fiber 1 bars? Those things are packed with fiber and will produce poop! And they're good! Suppositories are also a good idea. I recently had to put one in (a Tylenol one not this kind, but still...) and it was much less scary than I had anticipated, just for a word of encouragement! I was more freaked about it than my 3 y/o was!! ;)

My daughter did the same thing. I would keep up with the Miralax; a tsp a day. It will kick in eventually. Good luck mama. I know how frustrating this phase can be. Especially since they are choosing to be miserable!

This is typical of the age. A lot of kids do this. I think you should increase her fiber foods, decrease things like bananas and rice and cheese which bind her up, and increase water. Do not do karo syrup as some people will suggest - it's garbage and all sugar.

I think it's terrible that so many kids are on miralax and everyone thinks this is normal. It's not. She needs to be on a comprehensive supplement for children that will eliminate this problem. If you want help, I can provide it (free).

I'd put a diaper on her at night - maybe when she is relaxed, things will happen. You can ask the pedi about a suppository (mixed votes on that one) but I don't know if she'll let you insert it. It not, you're not going to like the inpatient solution to it!

When my Daughter was that age, she got constipated and would, on purpose, withhold her poop.
We... had to see a Pediatric Gastroenterologist.
HE said.... that once a child starts to withhold their poop.... it is then a 2 part problem: 1) medical 2) emotional based problem.

He said, everyday, he sees toddlers like this. They are toilet training. Or are forced to only poop on a toilet, when they are not ready. The child, then withholds their poop.
It then, causes internal problems/blockages/possible Encopresis/emotional problems... and it is just a vicious cycle.... because the more the child holds in their poop... the harder the poop becomes internally AND then when it does come out, it causes pain. Therefore, the child, will again, avoid pooping, because it hurts when coming out... it is hardened... and internally the more they hold it in, the more pain they get. Then the vicious cycle continues.

For many children, he said once Constipation sets in... it is very hard to undo... the process of pooping normally again.
For our Daughter, it took THREE months... for her to Psychologically feel comfortable with pooping again... AND for her stool to become a normal texture again. We had to give her... prescription remedies. Per the Doctor.

You said your Daughter is backed-up. Did they do an x-ray????
If the only way she will poop, is in a diaper... then LET her.
You did not say, if she is avoiding the toilet or only going in her diaper or just not going at all.....????????

IF constipation gets worse.... then "Encopresis" can occur. Look it up online. I am sure, you don't want this to occur.

IF she is not even pooping in her diaper... then... it is probably because, her poop cannot come out anymore. AND it probably hurts (internally and externally)... which is what happens with constipation. So then the child AVOIDS pooping.... more.

Try giving her pear juice. Whole unfiltered apple juice. Prune juice.

I think, it is time to take her to the Doctor....
If her bowels becomes SO backed-up... then it is a real MEDICAL problem... and her bowels are obstructed and bulging internally.... and that is not good.
Take her to the Doctor or ER....

The Pediatric Gastroenterologist we saw for my daughter... said NO suppositories... on children....

is she scared of pooping in the potty? My daughter had an issue when we were at my Grandparents for 5 days this summer. She said she doesnt poop at Grandma's house. Finally, I went in front of her to show her it would be ok/not painful/whatever, and then she wanted to poop in the potty like Mommy. I dont know if that's anything that will help your daughter, but it helped mine.

Also, there are occasions my husband has had to get out the suppository, when she just cant get the poop out. (even after lots of trying) It's better to get it out than in.

Try the glycerin suppositories. They will help her poop.

I second the suppository. I know it seems like it would be a bit harsh, but just put extra lube on it and she will be fine. She will have no choice but to poop with in minutes.
My daughter has extreme issues with going #2 on the toilet(she is 4) and has developed unimaginable control over her bowel movements. After holding it in for a few days several times she gets too backed up and we have had no choice but to use them.
The Dr. has recommended us using them when we have taken her in for this. They cause the poop to become softer and almost slide right out so they don't have to push and have it hurt.
Though this will help, it is not to be used very often. Fresh fruit everyday can be a natural way to prevent chronic constipation. As well as whole grains for my daughter, like a Kashi cereal for breakfast or a snack.
Good Luck!
