Need Health Insurance

I am working and will have insurance through my employment at the end of March; however, it is CRAZY expensive to add my husband and daughter on for family coverage. I have applied for AllKids for my daughter, but they are still processing the application. Any ideas as to getting an individual plan for my husband? I tried several (bcbs, humana, etc.) but they don't seem to offer the coverage I'd like. (they give me a $500 deductible and $35 copays, and most of the "benefits" do not kick into the 80/20 until after the deductible is met) Since DH is a healthy guy, it just doesn't seem like it would be worth it to pay the nearly $200 premium each month, plus a $500 deductible. Seems like we'd end up paying the premiums and then having to pay for all of the treatment anyway. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

We used Farm Bureau when faced with a very similar situation. They have a short term policy with TRH that is very reasonable, and no medical exam. They offer 60, 90, 120, and 180 day coverages. You choose either the $300 or $500 deductible option.
For a 120 day policy, $300 ded.: 6 yr old $141.30,
39 yr old $197.38
$338.68 total

Hi Amber, I am not sure what direction you need to go, but let me tell you, where I work family coverage is a soaring $650.00 a month!!! Luckily my husband's is way cheaper and we pay $273.00 a month for family. If you do decide to go with an individual policy scope out the benefits. I work in an anesthesia billing office, and all too often we have claims deny because it was an individual policy and does not cover anesthesia. These types of claims can be pricey as they are billed in minutes. They will cover the surgeon, but not the anesthesiologist. And then some policies will cover the surgeon but will only allow (not pay) 25% of the surgeons bill for the anesthesia. This leaves a huge balance in both cases for the patient to pay. Just make sure all providers of specialty are covered before choosing a plan.$200.00 does seem like alot of money to pay for premiums, but god forbid if something terrible were to happen and he had to go into the hospital, at least you know that he has decent coverage that will pay more.

Amber...

I am actually an insurance agent and work for a satellite office for BCBST. There are plans that aren't as pricy, and that don't offer the copays (that lower the monthly premium).
We also offer Humana. There are short terms out there that only cover catastrophic issues.

You should give us a call....

I used The MEGA Life and Health Insurance Company for my family, because going through my work was too expensive. The co-pay is $20 and you can build whatever plan you want.
Their address is 9151 Boulevard 26
P.O. Box 982010
North Richland Hills, TX 76182-8010
Phone: 1-800-527-5504
I think they have a website too. They were very reasonable. But were terrible on my maternity coverage. Fortunately your husband won't need that! :0)

I am in the same boat. My husband and I can't afford health insurance right now. We have two children and we are looking for something for them. I saw that you had applied to allkids. Is that just for the state of Alabama? Do you know of any other insurances that are not that pricey for kids? I had looked on BCBS for us as a family and it was like $350 a month. I just can't afford that right now. I have heard of people just getting hospital insurance, to cover major medical problems. I am not sure if that will help or not.

I've been in the Medical Billing/Collections business for 7 years and your plans like BCBS, Aetna, United Healthcare, Humana while may be a little more pricey on the premium side are good companies and your safest bet. Just a professional opinion from someone who works in the industry.

Amber,
My husband has been self employed for a couple of years now and health insurance kills us. I would say if your husband is a healthy person I would look for a policy that covered if something major happened. Look for an agent that sell from more then one company because they can shop for you the best plan and cost.
Good luck
M.
