Need Guidance on Home Schooling

I am considering home schooling our son. He will be ready for Kindergarten next August. I have not started the research process yet and wondered what resources online or in the community are the best to look to for guidance on this subject? We live in the Northland, Clay County.

What can I do next?

Hi A., My name is M. and I too live in the Northland. I currently homeschool my son who is going into the second grade and an eager 4 year old who is going to start kindergarten this year, being homeschooled too! We absolutly love it. My husband too is in law enforcement. He works for KCPD. We should totally get together. I can tell you a little bit about what I know and then you will have some options. I hope to hear from you soon.... M. ###-###-#### ____@____.com have a great weekend!

FHE is a local help for homeschoolers (FAmily Home Education). I currently homeschool my 4 year old. She will finish kindergarten this quarter and start a reading readiness program through Accelerated Christian Education. aceministries.com

There are many sources for curriculum available besides the one above. One place that is discounted is Rainbow Resource Center--they have a catalog that is mind-boggling, but set up by subject so you can research easier. good luck

Hello
I am close to you in Independence, MO and am home schooling my children for the first time this year. (Ages 9,6,2,6 wks) I will have my hands full and love it! I am using the Abeka program because it is Christian based and has the planning and curriculum all done for me. It sounds like it is a great curriculum to use and you can check it out at www.abeka.com. It is pricy, so I purchased a lot of mine used on e-bay and other sources. There is so much information out there, you will have no problem finding info on all different types and styles with yahoo or google searches. I recommend reading this book: The First Year Of Homeschooling Your Child by Linda Dobson, and since you have a son I recommend this book: Bringing Up Boys by James Dobson. This book helped us know that homeschooling was the for sure way for us!! I have a lot more info that could help you out, so e-mail me if you want more web-sites to research info. at ____@____.com
Good Luck,

Hello ladies :)
My name is S. and I homeschooled my oldest 3 daughters for 8 years. We just recently started formally homeschooling our 6 year old. I'd love to make some connections with other homeschooling moms. I run a daycare, so I don't have tons of time to get out. But I would like to make some plans to meet at least a few other families from time to time. I'd love to have some local friends that I can email with regularly.

We use the ACE School of Tomorrow curriculum. I've always been happy with it. It's both in workbook format and on computer starting at 3rd grade. I did make my own curriculum some years. ____@____.com

Good Shepherd Academy is a great resource for homeschoolers. Their bookstore offers a "curriculum consultation" to help you sort through all the choices and figure out which one best meets your needs. The bookstore has reasonable prices and carries a lot of used curriculum. Also, they do not charge tax on your purchases since they are non-profit. It's located in Grandview, so a bit of a drive, but if you're feeling overwhelmed with the curicculum choices, it would be worth the trip. You can check them out online at www.gsacademy.org or call them at ###-###-####. Good luck!

Hey! I'm also considering home schooling. My son is 4. He will not be ready for kindergarten until next August, (he will be 6) b/c his birthday is in Nov. I've been working with him at home for awhile now with simple things such as abc's, letter sounds, colors, numbers, shapes, etc. I just recently came across a wonderful website for teaching kids early reading skills. Your son may enjoy this site just as my son has enjoyed it. http://www.starfall.com/ He also enjoys the Leapfrog videos.

Good luck! :)
