Hello! I would like to get some PERSONAL gift ideas for a first time mom. Not things for the baby but practical & pampering type things for a new mom. This is for someone who lives out of state as well.

What can I do next?

Spa gift certificates are good. If they are for the time period before delivery, it's great to have someone else paint the toenails you can barely see anymore, let alone reach. If they are for after the delivery, they are especially nice if they come with an offer to babysit while she goes to the spa.

When one of my friends recently had her second child, I decided to do something for her instead of getting something for her baby. I got a nice basket and filled it with movie theater candies, some sodas and microwave popcorn and a gift card for the local movie rental store. She loved it! It is hard getting out with a new baby in the house and this let her have some time with her husband while the baby slept and also helped get her through some of the longer sleepless nights.

gift certificate for a massage/facial etc WITH a gc for babysitting. I remember it being a big luxury to just get my hair cut worry-free at that time.

Make a basket of great lotions, 'goodies' that she likes, saying she still needs to be 'babied'.

Vouchers for naps! Someone did this for me--came to my house while I took a much needed nap to assure me that if the baby woke they would handle things until I woke up--a godsend!

I vote for some sort of services - housecleaning, babysitting (I've watched twin newborns for a friend so she could nap a few times & that has been really helpful), spa treatments, cooking or otherwise providing meals. She is/will be adjusting to lots of new stuff in her house already, so I'd suggest providing things that will not add any stuff to her home, but will add value to her life. You're a dear to think of HER!! All too often, once baby is born, mom is largely invisible though she is now doing a whole lot more work!!

We just welcomed my 3rd son into our family 7 weeks ago, and the best gift I received was a complete dinner from Omaha steaks delivered to my door. My out-of-state cousin sent it, and the card said "I wish I could be there to cook dinner for you." There's nothing like getting through a rough day, dreading the dinner hour when you have to cook while listening to the baby scream because you can't hold him and cook at the same time, and then a fully cooked dinner arrives on your doorstep. To me, that was more personal than lotions, candles, pedicures, massages...though all of those would have been appreciated too =) I liked the bracelet idea too, if the new mom likes jewelry.

How about a pair of nice, comfy-but-reasonable-looking jammies? preferably with a V neck or front buttons for nursing? I know in those first few weeks, on GOOD days I got dressed at 3pm, on not-so-good days, I just stayed in the pj's all day. My mom gave me a a nice new pair of front-button pj's--the kind you don't feel bad if you run out to get the mail in them--and that gave me a lift, since even if they weren't real clothes, at least they were a step up from DH's boxers and t-shirts, which I'd worn for pj's while pregnant!

Very nice of you to think of the mom...some of my personal favorites were a house cleaning service and a gift certificate to Super Suppers. I could place my order of dinners online and then pick them up frozen. I was able to pull one out in the morning and pop it in the oven for dinner. A lot of friends made me meals as well but after the first month it all stopped so this bought me some sanity a few nights after all the newness wore off.

A nice thing to do at the shower is have all the guests write wishes for the newborn then give all the notes to mom in a beautiful box.

This will only work if she is Not breastfeeding--but Gourmet coffees! and chocolates--unless she has a lot of weight to lose--the other thing I would highly suggest--Gift certificates to the local spa for a Spa pedicure! Also depending how younfg the baby is--if they have a local "Super Suppers" in her area--a gift certificate to them would be wonderful too!

I get my friends Mommy bracelets (mommybracelet.com), and they love them. It has their child's name on it, they come in many designs, and you can add strings onto them for future kids. Also, I saw at the Tom Thumb the other day in the gift certificate section a Spa Wish gift card. It is good at spas all over the country and has a website so they can find one near them. I'm going to get one of these for my friend and put it in a basket of Bath and Body Works items and send it to her in Maryland. Also, it isn't personal, but when I had my daughter people bought over dinner and gave us gift cards to dinner. It was the best thing ever. The maid service sounds wonderful too. Sometimes the best gifts are always "personal", but they are always remembered. I can tell you everyone who bought food or gift cards to restaurants, but I can't tell you who bought which outfit, picture frame, blanket, etc.

I did this for a friend that was having her 4th, so I knew she had all the baby stuff she needed. I got her a box of candy and on the computer made a candy wrap that said "Wonder pills for sore nipples" - I knew she was going to breast feed - I basiclly copied the candy wrapper stuff (nutrition info, etc.) but just changed it to be funny. I also got her some breast pads and lanolin to put on her breasts for sore nipples. I also got her a magazine, and I can't remember, but you can get a book or magazine, maybe some bubble bath, a gift card to a salon to get her nails done, a starbucks gift card for those late nights...oh, I think I got her a water bottle since I knew she'd need to be drinking a lot of water after the baby was born. The thing is, all the pampering things are not practicle when you have a new baby! Who has time to read a magazine or watch a movie, or sit in the tub with a new baby! Good luck!

One more! For my 1st child, someone gave me a journal and each of my friends at the baby shower wrote well wishes/ideas in it. Then, after the baby was born, I kept it in my nightstand and wrote down cute things the baby did that I didn't want to forget. I've got one for each of my 3 kids now and I write sometimes often, sometimes not often, but I write in them little notes to them. I think one day I'll give them to the kids (maybe when they are 18, or maybe when they have their own kid) but I think it will be funny for them, and help them understand my feelings during different times in their lives...like why my daugther and I butted heads so much when she was younger!

I got a book form a website called iseeme.com that I loved. It was a long story using all of the letters of my childs name. We loved it so much we have gotten them a lot for others. The book is very well made with very prtty illustrations. It comes in a very nice gift box and I think the price was very reasonable.

Hope that helps!

you could start a charm braclet for her. Dixie Fashion in Arlington is a place that offers good prices with hundreds of charm choices from scissor charms to dog, sewing, office machine, alphabet, mother, new home, seasonal, bikes, music...and the list goes on!!! Start off with one charm from you, and add one each year that applies to that phase of her life.

Sorry this is so late in responding, but thought the ideas might help in the future. I like to get the mom special stuff I know she likes. I've done PJ's, bubble bath, facial masks, Dr Pepper, etc. I put it all in a wicker basket and give it to her. I've also done similar stuff for dad. I don't spend mega $$...just go to Wal-Mart. Since you'll have to mail it, use one of those boxes from the post office that's already decorated. Hope this helps.

Hello E.,

How about some essential oils: lavender, peppermint

this one is not a pampering one but I recommend it to every mom: the book: smart medicine for a healthier child

it's an awsome book!

Love the bracelet ideas either the mommy bracelet or the charm bracelet. Also really love the Omaha Steak dinner idea or the gift cards to dinner.

I'm not sure what your budget is, and obviously, it depends on the mom and what she's like, but here are a few ideas:

A bracelet (something easily removable) Not only is it a symbol of the event, but can be changed from wrist to wrist if she's nursing (as we all forget "which side we were on")
A journal (to document her first year as a mom, not necessarily every baby milestone.
A house cleaning (we've pitched in as friends before and done this - the moms always love it)
A certificate for a pedicure or some other pampering activity.
Digital photo frame
Extra large fashionable purse (who says you have to carry around a dorky diaper bag with rubber ducks on the side)
Magazine Subscription or gift certificate for book store.
Create a small basket of goodies (chocolate, one magazine or book, a DVD (chick flick, of course), journal and pen, nail polish, hand lotion, etc.)

Good luck!
