"Need Dog Vet with a Heart, Not One Trying to Retire off Me"- Thank You All

To all of you who took the time to write and share your vets with me, thank you so much. Cynthia appears to be a neighbor of mine and recommended a place just minutes from where we live. Snickers appears to have recovered on his own and is once again trying to assert his authority over us, but we will get him in to the vet as soon as possible. Hope everyone has a Merry (if not a white!) Christmas!!

What can I do next?

Dr. Vice at Gainesway Small Animal Clinic. There are no words to described how caring and awesome he is. I have two dogs and both have severe allergies (shots every week)it took a couple years to get them straightened out, thanks to him. His phone number is ###-###-####.

I don't know of a hospital in your area, however, what you are describing sounds like a parasite. My mom has an older small dog (JRT) and she's had it several times. They can pick it up pretty much anywhere outside, and it causes lots of digestive problems. It can be fixed with medication and a little time. My mom has 2 other dogs, same breed, and they have never gotten it. Seems like the older dogs are more suseptable.

I use Mayfair Animal Hospital on Maynard in Cary. They are not cheap (about the same as most other local vets) but they doctors and staff are fantastic- they remember us each year and what our dogs have been through, you can tell they are there because they love to help animals. Always makes me feel better to see the doctor loving on my doggies. I think the number is ###-###-####. Our last name is Augustine if they ask you for a referral.

I'm too far away to recommend my vet, but I know what you mean about the $$. I found one in Memphis that doesn't charge the office visit/exam fee. That helps tremendously. It's walk-in service only so sometimes I have to wait but I know I haven't spent $45 just by walking in the door. They charge comparable prices for shots, etc. but the no exam/visit fee makes a huge difference in price. Maybe you can find something similar in your area. Good Luck!

Hi L.,
I looked at your profile and saw that you live in Louisville. I don't know if this vet would be too far away for you to go, but I'll give you the info anyway! I go to My Pet's Animal Hospital. There is one location in Alcoa near the airport and one off of Northshore and Pellissippi in Knoxville. The owner (he is also one of the vets) is Sam and he is wonderful. Very personable and caring. I don't know how they compare to other vets price wise, but I would not go anywhere else because they take such good care of all of our pets (2 dogs, 1 cat). I drive 1/2 an hour to go to them. Anyway, I don't know what sliding scale is, but I do know that for well visits, they offer a list of things to choose from (vaccines, blood tests, etc.) so you can pick and choose how much you want to do. I was actually talking to Sam about this the last time I was in there and he was explaining to me that they want to be able to provide services to all income levels which is why they do that. Anyway, if you want to know anything specifically, please send me a message and I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. Their office staff is really fantastic also. I would not go anywhere else!

Lisa this is a long way to go, but Dr. Locklear in Lumberton (SouthEastern Vet Hospital) is great. Don't know about sliding scale but he and staff are very caring.

He sees all my poodles and has cured one that was very ill. She is fine now. He is currently working at solving a health crisis with one of my other female poodles.

I live far from Lumberton but feel that this clinic is the best.

We really like the Banfield vet association. There is a banfield clinic in every petsmart store. The have what they call the wellness plan where you chose your level of care (basic to advanced tier) and then you pay a monthly bill. We have the basic for our cat - like 10.00 a month and the medium plan for our dog since she's older and requires more stuff, I think it's like 15.00 a month. The plan includes your yearly vaccines and fecals (which would cost more than 120.00 a year anyway. But the best thing is that ALL offices are included, plus some other things thru out the year, I can't remember what. This has been great since our dog has troublesome ears, so whenever I suspect she has yet another ear infection I can take her in without being worried about a charge. We have been with Banfield for over 10 years, 1st in FL and then just transferred our contract up here when we moved. The only down side is you are hooked into a year contract, so if you don't like it you still have to pay the rest of the year out.

Try Soddy Daisy. There is a little vet on the main strip. If you stay on 153 after you go under 27 its about 10 miles on the left. Small and inexpensive. Cant remember the name but had a sick cat they took care of a few yrs back. good luck. When my dog gets sick like that i put him in a kennel or the bathroom when hes unsupervised to keeep the mees managable.
