My family and I are first time home buyers and will be moving to our new house in Garland next week. I have heard a lot of negative things about the utility service in this area being extremely expensive, does anyone know? Also our home has a gas fireplace can anyone recommend a gas company? Last but not least has anyone tried the bundles that offer internet and cable, etc, and is it cheaper than getting each service from different companies? Any suggestions, advice or comments are welcomed! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Since Garland is considered a Municipality, they are not under the PUC jurisdiction & do not have any competion. If you are not on the outskirts of Garland you have no choice but to get GP&L. We live in Garland & we figured our bill to be approx 15 cents per KWH (this is just for the electric portion). As for FIOS, it is available in some of Garland (my hubby sells FIOS for Verizon & says not it's available in older part of Garland, but is avaialble in the George Bush & Garland Rd area). If you can get FIOS, it is definately the best option. Would not recommend Comcast. Getting bundled serivce is cheaper than getting individual services from different providers.

Tameko,
Since Texas has become deregulated in electricity, there are many providers available. Not all are available in your area. We chose Stream Energy. It has lowered its rates 4 times in the last year while others were raising theirs. My wife and I are reps for Ignite which is the marketing arm for Stream Gas & Electric. You can access our ____@____.com
Simply scroll down the left menu to "Energy Services." Read about the "Service Options" and then go to the right menu and scroll down to the last option which is "Energy Rate Comparison" and check out Stream's rates vs. others. Please call me if you have any ____@____.com this helps.

Tameko,

If your home is in the Garland utility district, I don't think you have a choice but to go with them, and they do seem to be a bit higher. Bundling t.v., cable and phone can save you money. If you can get Verizon FiOS in your area it's really a great deal and wonderful service. Congrats on your new home and good luck.

We live in Garland, and here's a link to a chart that compares local electric rates (updated as of 11/1/06) -- Garland Power and Light is currently the cheapest! (you may have to cut and paste). It's actually a good deal b/c your water and electric all are billed in one bill.

Because GP&L has no competiton, they are able to offer low electric rates.

I second the PP - check to see if your area has Verizon's FIOS service available, it's new around here, but the best deal! We have comcast for cable and we are constantly having to call b/c our internet is down - I work from home and need my computer a lot so that gets irritating really fast!

Good luck and Congrats on your new home!
