Need Advice on Throwing a Baby Shower!

I am throwing a baby shower for my husband's cousin. She just adopted a baby this month, so the baby girl arrived two days after Christmas; however, this was an out of state adoption and she couldn't bring the baby back until all of the paperwork was complete, so they just got back this week!

She didn't want a shower before the arrival because she was scared that it might "jinks" things, so that's why we are having the shower AFTER the baby has arrived.

I need help with ideas for the shower. I just had a shower a few months ago myself and could use a lot of cute ideas from that but I really don't want it to look the same because several of the same people will be there (including the mother). So, I'm desperately needing any ideas for the shower....mainly decorations, any cute food things I could do, etc.

Also, this is going to be an open adoption. The child is going to be raised knowing that she was adopted and the birth mother plans on keeping in touch with the mother so all ideas are welcome!

Thank you!
K.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I just wanted to thank everyone that offered advice! The shower turned out GREAT! I ended up using the diaper cake idea. I made small diaper cakes for 4 tables and a large diaper cake for the head table. I was given MANY compliments on the decorations and everyone loved the diaper cake ideas....plus, she could use ALL of the decorations I used for the baby after the shower...that, to me, is wonderful because I hate spending money on decorations that are not going to be used again...it just feels like I'm throwing money away. Again, thank you all SO much!!

Hi K.~
My Husband's Niece (and I say it that way because she is actually 3 months older than me, and it just feels weird calling her my Niece) had a shower in the end of September~ her Hostesses did a Baby Girl Onesie type theme. All of the rooms were decorated in Little Baby Girl onesies of all styles, shortsleeve, longsleeve.....They hung them in every room we were using, on lines with clothes pins, pretty covered hangers, and when the shower was over they gave them all to Julie for her baby. I thought that was the neatest ideas ever! And the invitation was even shaped like a little onesie.
Have fun~ you will enjoy whatever you do~~~~ who doesn't LOVE baby showers!?

One cute food thing is to make a baby buggy out of a watermelon. Imagine a watermelon; cut the top quarter away. (So you're left with three-quarters of the watermelon.) Scoop out the watermelon, an add it to other fruit to make a fruit salad. You use orange slices for wheels...it's really cute. Here's one version online with a picture:

How about a cabbage patch baby party. You could get cabbage patch doll for centerpiece. Look in birthday asile for cabbage patch decorations. Maybe have cabbage leaves decorated with candles. Go to kinkos and make birthcertificates for place settings. You could have alot of fun with this i think. Good luck and its just a suggestion.
Have fun.

Hi K.

I remember at my baby shower my sister did a ducky theme that was really cute. It is appropriate for either a boy or a girl. She also had these cute little baby bottles and but bath salts in them for the gifts. It was in the fall and she also put fall mums on the tables for decorations and the guests got to win them. If it is a girl you could do a princess pink theme.

K.,

Hi there I'm so happy for your family to have a new baby. What is she going to use as the Theam of the babys room. If she has one you can use that and make that the Theam of your Shower. Like I used Teddybears So they had Teddyears all over the place. You can make alot of Party foods like to make Pink fudge make it like you would chocolate but use white Chocolate chips and food coloring. If its not going to be a suprise Shower let the New Mommy help you. Ask her what kinds of foods she would like to have. Also They did this at my Shower they had a little notebook and passed it around and had everyone to put some advice init. The one I like the best was Raise Your Child In Gods Eyes not in Anyones but His. Also a Game they played my Mom got a tray and she put all kinds of baby stuff on it and she covered it up with a blanket and when it was time for the games she passed it around and then covered it up and give everone a few mints to put down on paper what was on the tray who ever got the most got a prize and I got the stuff on the tray. Also one thing you can do is the prizes for the game make them stuff for the baby so the people will give them to the New Mommy. Another game that you can play is in the room where your going to be haveing the shower if you can tape a baby pen under a chair and the one that has that chair wins. Sence the baby is going to be at the Shower get some throw away Cameras and let people at the shower take some pics of the baby and stuff that is going on at the shower. Well I hope that this will help you in some way. May God Bless you and Your family and your husband's cousins family.

My daughter was born in December 2006 and the ladies at my church threw us a "Pink Christmas" themed shower. There weren't really a lot of decorations but they did a tabletop fiberoptic christmas tree and the ornaments were pacifiers, hair bows and headbands, diaper pins and some minature Disney Princess ornaments. I got to keep everything on the tree and it looked so cute! The food was just a small variety of finger foods and they served a hot punch. I know it's after Christmas now, but since the baby was born two days after Christmas and it's not too far past, it might be a cute theme!
