Need Advice on the Name Libby

I really like the name Libby but I can't find a more formal version of it that I like. I have seen Elizabeth which is just ok and Liberty which is a bit wild. I hesitate to name her just Libby because my name was just K. and I would've liked a longer version to set myself apart from other kids growing up. Plus I wonder if Libby is cute for a kid but not an adult so I want her to have an option as she gets older. Any advice/suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi there - how exciting, choosing a name! I think Liberty is a gorgeous name - I was going to call my little one that if he'd been a girl (he's a Theodore, always called Teddy, and absolutely teddy-like!). Anyway, Libby is a very cute name too but I've always thought it was a pet name for Elizabeth. How about called her Elizabeth - even tho you're not crazy about it - but call her Libby right from the start. Then she can choose what she wants when she's older - good luck - Alison

Hi,
Libby is fine for an adult. My daughter's middle name is Elizabeth after a very good family friend that passed away before she was born. She went by Libby - she passed away into her 70's. If you name her Elizabeth and she doesn't like Libby when she grows up she has many other options like Beth and Liz. Good luck to you and congratulations!

K.,

Congrats!!!! I agree with one of the other posters. I never use my given name, I named my children what I wanted them called and couldn't be shorten to anything else. I have a Ryan Jay and a Corey Allan. His father calls him RJ and Cor. Ryan's nickname is Tatoes and Coreys is Tat-Tots, they got these nickname (god only from where) and that is what their friends called them. I think Libby is an excellent name and it sounds to me like a name that fits both catagories. Good Luck and God bless your family and your new bundle of joy Beautiful Libby.

Something to consider: All of my children have nicknames that have nothing to do with their given name. So if you want to give her a 'given' name and then nickname her Libby, you could do that. Libby is a fine name though!

I have a neighbor that is named Libby....she's older(maybe 55) and it fits her just fine :-) It doesn't sound to me like a "childish" name.

I'm not a fan of nicknames so my opinion is name her what you want to call her. Libby is a great name and it's not all that common. Good luck and enjoy the baby, they grow SO fast!

"My God is bountiful" it says about the name Elizabeth. It's an English/Hebrew name. Variations (excuse the caps): BETTY, BETH, LIZA, LISA,LIBBY, ELSPETH, ELISE, ELISSA,LIZBETH, ISABEL, LIESL, LILIBETH, ILSE, LIZETTE. SCANDINAVIAN VARIATIONS: ELIZABET, ELISABET. ITALIAN VARIATION: ELISABETTA, ELIZABEL, ELZBIETA. POLISH VARIATION: ELIZA, ELYZA.

And these days, it seems you can just about create your own spelling or variation on a name. Betta (which really is a siamese fighting fish), Lisbeth, Lisbet,Elisabeth.

I think Libby is perfectly fine - I would suggest you give her a standardized middle name that could include variants so that she can use that as an alternate when she is older (if she so chooses). Congratulations on your new addition.

Congratulations on soon to be daughter. I think it's a great name for a child and an adult. I have a sister who's name is formally Julie on her birth certificate, not Julia, and she's never had a problem with her name. I think there are so many variations of names out there that nowadays, formal versions are not always presumed. If you like the name, go for it! It is not too common and it's unique. Also, as an added perk, Libby is a cool chic name--there is a girls salon at Parisian called Libby Lu where all the little girls go to get pampered!

Good Luck!

I've heard Olivia as the fully name for several Libby's I've known. My daughter is named Jacqueline Elaine (after family) and we've called her "Lainey" since birth. When she gets to be an adult, she can be what she wants.

Also, I'm sorry to say that Libby Lu has gone out of business. I got an email from them in December saying they were closing all of their stores in January. It was a favorite "special day" spot for us.

Knew a girl in college named Libby. Fit her perfectly, not babyish at all. So go for it.

I think Libby is a beautiful name! My sister had the same concern when she was naming her twins Libby and Maggie. Now she can't imagine having named them anything else. However, they often get called Libs and Mags, so be prepared for people shortening even Libby. :-)
