Need Advice on Diapers

first i will say i am a fan of cloth diapers. however, while adjusting to a newborn the experience can be too much to handle. i suggest pampers swaddlers 1 and 2 for the arrival stage, along with pampers sensitive wipes. (please don't use the perfumed ones- it's so unhealthy)

cloth diapers are not for everyone, but i do suggest that every reasonable person at least try it. we all know diapers are terrible for the enviroment, and that cloth diapers are also more cost effective. (those are pretty good reasons) i personally just like knowing exactly what i am exposing my baby's most sensitive area to.

cloth diapering is somewhat of a cult. if you venture into it- be prepared. there are a lot of choices out there. these are definetly not the cloth diapers of the past. my pick is bumgenius AIO- made with bamboo cloth. g diapers are also good for use at the sitters, grammas, or daycare. (it's hard to ask your caregivers to be as responsible as you;)

p.s. over the course of 2.5 yrs you can save 2-3 thousand dollars using cloth.

If you are asking about disposal diapers, for a newborn, either Huggies, Pampers or Luvs are best. Most hospitals will give you Pampers when you leave with your new baby. Luvs are cheaper than Huggies and Pampers. I wouldn't buy in bulk until the baby is in a Size 2 diaper because they grow so fast and you don't want too many left over diapers. Personally, I've been using Huggies because I always get their $3 off coupons in the mail. Check out the prices at the stores (Kroger always has sales) and also at Diapers.com--you can get diapers and formula if you are not breastfeeding, at a reasonable cost and no shipping fee over a $49 order.

I bouthgt with my first child Luvs with the 2nd and third pampers and my forth and in may 5th will be using Kroger value diapers. The value ones from either walmart or kroger are just fine. They hold just as well as pampers. I don't like luvs any more they remind me of huggies and i don't feel a kid should pee on cardboard thats what the middle of huggies and luvs feel like to me so i stay far away. But some perfer them. basically you may want try and see which you perfer and also what your baby can handle. Some babies depending on how they react to certain brands and stuff outside the womb. Some babies get excema and stuff so you will have to see. Also theres a consideration some people are health concious and they like cloth diapers.

I am a huge fan of Pampers and have used them for both of my girls. I also really like Costco brand diapers, they are priced well. I normally do Costco diapers during the day and pampers at night. This is of course with my 2nd, my 1st only wore pampers but they are expensive. I have heard that Huggies work better for boys.

I have 2 boys and have always liked pampers best, but my 1 year old had a diaper rash that never went away when he was around 5 months. We switched to Earth's Best and he has been great since then. Most people assume the chlorine-free brands will be more expensive, but they are around the same as pampers and they work great. So, if you end up needing something for sensitive skin Earths Best is great, although I can only find them at Babies r us and Toys r us! Oh and ask away whatever questions you have..that's what this forum is for! Good Luck.

I started with Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive, but when my children grew out of them I switched to Huggies. The bigger versions of Pampers gave both of my children rashes (one of my children is adopted, so it's not even a hereditary thing). However, some babies get rashes from Huggies. So, if you noticed a rash on your baby's tushy cheeks (not diaper rash), you might consider switching brands. I also prefer the new Movers version of Huggies because they are the strechiest and easiest to put on. However, the cheaper versions of Huggies work just as well as far as leaks are concerned.

Since you said you are a first time mom, I hope you don't mind two more pieces of diapering advice...

If it's a boy, make sure you point his pee pee down or you will have a lot of soaked pajamas. (No one told me to do that and I learned the hard way!) Also, different babies need different kinds of diaper cream. My daughter had a terrible diaper rash when we adopted her and only the white paste kind of cream helped her (like Aveeno). However, my son had a rash so bad it was bleeding and only the clear "jelly" kind of cream helped him (like A&D Ointment). So, if your baby gets a diaper rash that won't go away, try switching to a different kind of diaper cream.

Don't worry about posting so many questions. You're a new mom, and if you don't have any friends who are moms, you have to ask someone! That's what this site is for! I bugged my "mom" friends with hundreds of questions in the first few months with both of my children. Support is very important for a new mom, and we are all happy to give it to you.

As you can see everyone has different opinions and you will have your own preference too. My dad through my husband a diaper party and a bunch of guys played poker and hung out and each of them brought a pack of diapers and it really helped us try lots of different brands and we didn't have to buy diapers for a few months. My best advice is to not buy too many of any one brand and try several different kinds until you figure out what fits your baby best and then start stocking up on those. You can get on mailing lists for coupons, we often buy from diapers.com now because they deliver to our door so we stock up and they arrive in 2 days, free shipping. Good luck to you!!!

I have used Luv's, Walmart brand, and Meijers brand most consistantly on my 3.
Sometimes you can get a great deal by using the coupons you get from the major brands and buying when they are on sale but they can also really gouge you in the wallet.

Buy in bulk.But not too far ahead since baby may fit one size and the next DAY not fit it so well.

All babys ARE NOT created the same. We used pampers at first with our oldest... But they kept leaking out the sides. Luv's fit her body best. With both the boys we started with Luv's but had to switch brands.

I have not noticed having to go thru more diapers than if we were using the national brands... If they are wet you change them. :-)

If ordering from a web site, make sure to figure in shipping and other fees to make sure your getting the best deal.

Another vote for Target Brand. I didn't try them til my daughter was 1 year old. i hate to think about how much money i WASTED buying huggies and pampers.

i do think this is a matter of preference too though. some people just like certain ones. for example, my sis loves Luvs, but others say they're terrible. i would try different ones. walmart is a cheap place to buy name brands if you do go with those. and yes, walmart is cheaper than sam's club or costco for huggies etc. check out the price per diapers.

i also use TARGET wipes. i did from day one. they are SOOOOO much cheaper, even than sam's brand and costco.

hopefully, you will be gifted with different brands and discover which ones you like.

It all depends on your child. Every time my daughter pooped it came out of the leg openings on Pampers I know other moms who loved Pampers, Huggies fit well, but she had constant diaper rash with those, so we finally started using the Kirkland brand from Costco. No diaper rash and no blowouts. I suggest getting a membership to either Sams or Costco, diapers and wipes are much cheaper when purchased from the warehouses.

I highly recommend starting with Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive. They are hypoallergenic, have a wetness indicator (color line shows), and umbilical cord notch for newborns. These go up to size 2 (up to 18 lbs) and are the most gentle for a newborn!

After that, you can use the regular Pampers Swaddlers that go up to a size 2-3 (22 lbs).

After those, you can continue with the Pampers brand, but you can also just test other brands as well, even store brands if you need to save money. At this point, the "best" diaper will be one that fits your budget and fits your child the best. The only brand we couldn't use on my daughter was Luvs. I don't know what it was, but she hated them!! Most of the time I bought store brand, and even the Sams store brand to buy in bulk & save money.

I am not sure about the cheapest place to buy them. I just compared the same size/count at Walmart, Sams, and diapers.com and they were all the same. I thought diapers.com was supposed to be a good discount. Maybe someone else knows more about that or other sites?

I found that I had to try out different diapers to found out what worked for my son. Personally I had great luck with Luvs, Pampers, and Huggies...Luvs generally are much less than the coupons they offer for Huggies and Pampers and work just as well. I would recommend signing up at the Pampers.com and Huggies.com they will send coupons for extra savings to buy when they are on sale. I generally would buy them locally to support the surrounding jobs, I didn't see any great savings to buying on-line personally.

I had a preemie baby~ but for diapers, I feel it's a matter of what fits your baby, what works for you (and baby) and what you can really afford.

I did find that huggies brand did not work for us and they were overly constrictive for my son. This was for all types and sizes and he was very uncomfortable in them.

Pampers Swaddlers to start out for sure...
Then the Sam's Club brand (starts at size 3 i think) is the best diaper I found and best price!

i use walgreens brand diapers. I have also used sam's club and walmart brand. I stick with the walgreens, because after coupons, they are the cheapest. I can say the only ones that didn't work were luvs. everything else worked for my daughter so we went with the cheapest ones.

The biggest thing I can tell you is not to over buy right now. Purchase a pack of diapers, that you plan to use at the beginning. I purchased 1 pack of size 1 diapers. then I purchased a box from sam's club that was size 2. We didn't even use the full pack of 1's, before we were into the 2's.

Every baby will grow differently.

i have found it is cheaper to purchase at the store, as there is no shipping fees included. Once you find the brand you like, you can start researching if there is a cheaper place to purchase them. name brand's might have cheaper, but store brand typically won't be any cheaper

I agree with everyone else about Pampers swaddlers in the beginning but I was given a pack of Parent's Choice from Walmart for my son last month and I LOVE them. I was so impressed. With coupons and sales you can get name brand really cheap.

Now that I have 2 in diapers I have been ordering from www.diapers.com, they let you mail in coupons and it is so nice to have the diapers at your door 2 days later. It is not the cheapest way to order though.

My grandchildren are wearing cloth diapers, Bum Genius. They are micro fiber and wash up beautifully, if you use natural products like Shaklee FreshLaundry and Nature Bright. Disposable diapers are, unfortunately sprayed with a lot of chemicals, that are held against your baby's genitals for 2-3 years. You can order Seventh Generation unbleached, natural non-chemicals diapers at diapers.com. They come by the case and so are not expensive that way. Reducing your baby's exposure to chemicals is better for their health.

Target brand are my favorite! Luvs gave both my girls a rash because they are scented and also their leakage was horrible. I feel as though Pampers and Huggies Natural Fit fill up too quickly. It seemed like we were changing diapers after the smallest pee. I do like the regular Huggies (not the curved natural fit). I agree with the other mommies that say try them out and see what works best for you. Congrats on your pregnancy!

I also highly recommend cloth diapers from a cost-effective, reliability, and environmental standpoint. The cheapest are using prefold diapers, but those aren't always the easiest with daycare providers. I also use contour diapers by MotherEase and Kissaluvs- those are my favorite and both very well priced. On a good note- you never find yourself at 6am with no diapers. No late-night runs to Target to buy more. It is recommended if you wash your own (which is cheaper, and really not too bad work-wise- takes about 10 minutes every two days)- wash every 2 days.

Personally, I have always used either Target brand or Kirkland brand (Costco) which are made by Huggies. Never had any issues with either of these. And if night wetting is an issue, just go a size up for night time. Hope this helps, and congrats!

I like Pampers the best, but Huggies usually have more coupons in the Sunday paper...Huggies are fine also. I've tried Walgreens brand and Sam's Club Members Mark brand, but I found I had to change them more often so they didn't leak through...so really not a savings. My sister in law used only Luvs but I didn't have any luck with them...they seemed cheap and the tabs often ripped.

Like everyone else, I think I used Pampers Newborn Swaddlers at the very beginning (notch and all), then went to the ToysRUs brand because I felt that even with coupons Pampers/Huggies were not worth it and they fit.
Since all baby bodies are not built the same, you need to find what fits. If you're spending money on a brand that allows leakage, you'll be going through them (and clothes) faster. Buy the smallest packs you can to test the different brands to find the fit. Your child may change over time and drive the need to change brands as well. When we got to pull-ups we used Huggies and Dry-ups (Meijer brand) interchangeably.

when my girls were newborns i used pampers swaddlers, then we used pampers till they got a litle older about 9 months or so and use luvs, they are cheap and work.

I highly recommend huggies when they get into size two and three. But when they are new borns pampers swaddlers work great. You will get less diapers for your dollar with pampers as they get bigger. I highly dont recommend pampers because they pee through them so easily as well as luvs. Huggies regular are ok until they get to be in size 3 or 4 and recommend huggies cruisers they work well. Luvs are super cheap but dont do the trick. Huggies are highly recommended. Dont buy in bulk until they are in size 3s because they grow so fast and size 3 they are most likely to stay in the longest. I get the 125 count for 25 dollars and they last me a month. Good Luck. Ok, this is a loaded question, and based a lot on opinion. I am a mother of 4, so I have a lot of practice with diapers. Pampers are my all time favorite, but they are expensive. Luvs are good for the price, but 2 of my kids were allergic to them (caused major diaper rash). We currently use Parents Choice (from walmart) because they are cheap, and good. They dont smell nice like the pampers, but they are just as absorbent. Huggies, i do not like at all. They do not absorb nearly as much as any other diaper. They get "poofy" after one small pee, and you will find yourself changing diapers twice as often. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, your labor and birth, and with your new little one :)

My favorite diapers are Huggies, but they are also the most expensive. If you can get them online or at a discount shop then its worth it. They also tend to be stretchier and so the child can wear a smaller size longer (which means more diapers per package). I totally recommend buying the Huggies brand wipes (and their container to dispense them). They are a strong and work well, and are worth the extra money as they don't get stuck down inside the container as badly as the cheap ones do and they are thicker.

Of the cheaper diaper brands my favorites are from Target (up and up brand). They are the best ones for being cheap. I use them almost exclusively.

I would not recommend Luvs brand. It holds less and they are scented and I think they stink. :) The cheap Walmart (parent's choice brand) and Meijer brand are stiff and need to be crunched up so they get softer before putting them on the baby. I don't think its worth the money you save by using them. (and they are the same price as target ones, so it isn't like you're saving lots of money to use them).

Pampers swaddlers are the best diaper for newborns.. They are very soft and absorb alot.. they only come in sizes newborn, 1 and 2 and I think there is a size 2-3 now. pampers swaddlers come in a yellow box or bag.

then we switched to pampers baby dry which come in a green bag.

Every babyt is different some pee more than others.. some have more poop blowouts.. so some diapers work better for some babies.

My kids are skinny and huggies never seemed to fit them well.

I have treid all the store brands.. some are ok. but they dont cost that much less and you end up changing the baby more often so there is not a big cost savings.

when you buy diapers you should divide the pack price by the number of diapers in the box to see what it costs per diaper. That is the only way to know if you are getting a good deal. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy the small pack - sometimes it is cheaper to buy the case. But dont buy too many newborn size diapers.. they only go up to 10 pounds.. my son was born at 8 pound 8 oz so he almost grew out of newborn diapers before we used up one pack. My duaghter was smallaer and grew slower and she wore newborn diapers for 2 months.

We used Pampers and Huggies only since I used some store brand that was given to me and my daughter would wake up soaking wet and I would have too change hr sheets and deodorize the crib mattress even though I use a mattress cover.

I like huggies the best. I like buying them from Toys-R-Us because they sell the big megapacks. If you join the diaper club, you get points for each pack and I think you geta free pack of diapers for every 10 that you buy.
