Need Advice on Daughter's Symptoms

Hi moms,
My daughter has been complaining for 5 days or more that her stomach hurts. She says it feels like she has dinosaur and shark teeth poking her stomach. A couple of days ago she also started saying her throat hurts and something is blocking food in her throat. Of course, she doesn't act sick and she's been eating fine and using the bathroom normally. She has no fever, doesn't even look sick. I'm trying to decide if she is looking for attention, which is a definite possibility with her, or if she should go to the doctor. My one thought is possible acid reflux. She fits some symptoms, but not all. Any thoughts or suggestions? I hate to let this go on for too long and then find out she really does have a problem that should be treated by the doctor, when I've just been assuming she was looking for attention.

What can I do next?

Hi W.! Strep throat or drainage due to allergies can cause a stomach ache and a sore throat with a low or no fever. Try looking in her throat to see if it's red or if you see any puss pockets (small white blisters). If you don't see any puss pockets try giving her allergy medicine. If you see any white patches I would take her to a dr for a strep test.

Give her a couple of TUMS or some MYLANTA liquid and see if that helps. if it does then she probably had some indegestion.

she is to young for Pepto bismol as it has an asperin component in it so dont give pepto to her.

I agree with the posters who said it might be Strep. Strep has been going around. My 5 year old often tells me her stomach hurts when it is really her throat or ears and my pedi has said that is very common for little kids to be confused about where the pain is coming from. Two of mine had strep a few weeks ago with no fever, still had a good appetite, & were running around and playing like crazy. Also keep in mind that if she has alot of drainage (allergies) it could be upsetting her stomach or making it hurt. Kids are just much tougher than us!!!!

I'd take her in to the doc for peace of mind. My friends son used to get a stomach ache and sometimes a headache...sometimes a sore throat and sometimes not, eventually a fever would develop. It was strept throat. Sometimes the symptoms of strept are not all that clear.

You know for my kids, that was always a hallmark sign of strep. I know it sounds odd, but they never spiked a temp until the infection really got bad. I would check it out with your dr. just to have soe peace of mind. Good luck and I hope she feels better

Never hurts to take her to the doctor and get it checked out. It definately sounds like some of the symptoms my daughter has with her acid reflux. It could be allergies but with the stomach pains I would get things checked out. Better to be safe!

Three weeks ago, my 13 yr-old daughter started complaining of horrible pain on her lower right side. It was Sunday night, so I waited until the morning and took her to the doctor. They did a blood test to confirm that her blood counts were normal (rules out appendicitis). Her stomach hurt for two weeks. We did a second blood test after the first week with the same results. Anyway, the doctor feels like it was just some stomach virus. She ended up getting a cold at the end of it, but still no fever or vomiting. In the absence of vomiting and fever, I wouldn't worry about it. You could always take her to the doctor to have the blood test done if it gives you peace of mind.
Good luck,
R.

I would take her to the doctor now. Could be an ulcer and it may be affecting her esophagus and she could choke due to swelling of the lining of her throat from extra acid. How painful for her. They can give her medicine to ease it.

A week is a long time when you are in pain.Ouch.

If it is something less, thank goodness, but at least you know.

You are right to worry.

Has she lost weight? does she drink alot and/or pee alot? is this after she eats? I would take her to the doc ..... 6 year olds really have no reason to complain like this for this long....as to the acting normally, kids have a way of doing this even when they are not well...........there are so many possibilities that it should be checked out......I will be thinking of you...

I had similar symptoms when I was around 9 years old. Turned out that my tonsils were so swollen that the doctor was surprised I could breathe. They were dripping stuff into my stomach which was why my stomach hurt all the time. Maybe just have her regular doc take a look at them and if thats it find a great ENT doc. Good luck!

I bet it is just an attention thing, but it would give you peace of mind to get her checked out by a doctor.

Try giving her a little Malox Jr. & see if the symptoms go away. Its safe for her age and won't hurt her. My son does the stomach thing all the time - but he's a worrier with a lactose intollerance so when he gets upset about something his stomach hurts. Never enough to quit him doing the things he loves, just the things he doesn't.

Could be strep even though she does not have a fever. Some friends of ours experienced the same with their 2 kids a few weekends ago.

Hello W.,

allergies are rampant now and perhaps drainage makes her stomach hurt. I'd still take her to the doctor. My daughter had the same symptoms last week and the doctor could not find anything. the only thing that would help her stomach was anise seed tea (I did add some sugar). I also gave her probiotics. actually just one dose of the probiotics helped her. the doctor advised to give her probiotics twice daily for one week. I think there is a bug going around and perhaps her immune system is strong enough that she's not developing other gastric distress symptoms. Good luck! ~C.~

W.,

When children want attention, they throw tantrums. I don't think they complain for 5 days or more that their stomachs and throats hurt. I think your daughter isn't always in pain, but when pain strikes, it's bad. I think you should take your daughter's allegations seriously and schedule appointments with a gastroenterologist and an ear, nose, and throat doctor ASAP.

Personally I would rather spend the $20 copay and ease my mind than to ignore it and find out there is something wrong. I find with my son even when he is sick he still acts like his normal bratty self. :) I hope all is well with her.

It is better to be safe than sorry. I would take her to the the doctor. If you find out there is nothing wrong then you can deal with the attention thing after.
