Need Advice About Where to Buy a Prom Dress for a Tall, Plus-size Teen

Can anyone tell me about a place in the NYC metro area where I could buy my daughter a nice, but not ridiculously expensive prom dress. She's tall and somewhat overweight, with a large build. I don't want to buy anything online because if she can't try it on, then we won't know whether or not it will look good.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

First of all, thanks to all of you who responded to my post -- the answers were very helpful!! We are still in the process of finding a dress. We went to David's Bridal on Saturday in Manhattan, but they were out of a lot of sizes and colors. Then we went downtown to a small dress shop called Meg's on East 9th street between 1st and 2nd Aves. Meg didn't have my daughter's size, but said she could custom make the dress for $250, which is reasonable for a custom-made dress. We weren't 100% sure about that one either. Then we went to a store called ENZ's that specializes in 1940s styles (like Betty Paige, etc.) but she couldn't find her size there either. So we may go out to Woodbridge Commons this weekend, or to Paramus. I am compiling a list of stores and I will post the list to this site when I'm finished so that everyone can have it. Thanks again!!!

David's bridal is an excellent place to go. They have plus size and if there is any alterations they can do it.
My other suggestiong would be to have it custome made. You can find almost anything in the garment district.
Finally I would suggest online. If she does find something she likes. Order it in her size and a size larger.
I am plus size and work in fashion so if you need any more help send me an email @ ____@____.com

interested in hearing the answer I have the same problem

We have had to buy many dresses. My daughter is a size 0 which is hard to find also, anyway I suggest going to Group USA. If you go to their website you can find if there is one located near you. They have all kinds of dresses and all kinds of sizes. They can even order your size and they do alterations. Hope this helps. Happy shopping!

In Queens on Jamaica avenue Btwn 163 st & 170 st there are several dress shops that have really great prices and they have all sizes.

B.,
Are you able to get to the Woodbridge mall? There are 3 or 4 dress shops with prom dresses (I was there recently with my mother to get a plus size mother of the bride dress for my mom) and there were a few plus size girls trying on dresses. I don't remember the name of the store we were in, but I know they went up to dress size 24.
good luck

I would look at rk bridal, they are mainly a bridal store (obviously), but they do have other dresses. Also, my cousin bought a "bridesmaid" dress for her prom & loves it. Also, I believe the dept. Stores have plus sizes. Also, David's bridal has a prom section

Good luck.

I know of 2 places but they are in long island. Estelle's Oh-So Dressy and Beautiful Bride in lynbrook. I got a dress for my cousin at Beautiful Bride and she's a size 26 and rather tall also. It is on Merrick Road. Unfortunately, I don't remember where Estelle's is located in Long Island. Hope this helps. Good luck!

There's a store in Paramus, NJ. It's on route 4, before you get to the Garden State Plaza Mall. I forget the name of it, but they have really nice dresses for really good prices. Also try Group USA in Elizabeth, NJ at the Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall.

Good Luck.
