Need Advice About What Kind of Bottle to Use for My 5 Week Old Daughter.

HI all, I want to start feeding my daughter the breastmilk that I have pumped and saved, but am unsure as to which bottle to use. Has anyone ever used the MAM bottles and nipples? I am terrified of giving my daughter more gas. She is almost 5 weeks old and seems to be doing great now, hardly any gas, and would like it to stay that way! SO, that makes me wonder which is the best bottle and nipple combo? Also, the bottle has to be BPA free... Any advice, stories, recommendations, etc would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks, moms!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ladies... oh thank you so much for all your AWESOME responses. Wow. There are so many amazing women in this city who know SO much! I am SO grateful for this resource! Anyway, I introduced a bottle of my expressed milk to Adelina (well, my husband gave it to her!) and she took it well enough. We have started with the MEDELA bottles that just came with my pump. However, I have ordered the MAM bottles with a slow-flow nipple, and if she doesn't take to those, I am going to try either the Playtex drop ins or the Born Free bottles. Those seem to be the two highest recommended. I would do the Dr. Brown's but they are not BPA free, and I am hesitant about glass bottles, simply for transport purposes. I tend to break things. Anyway, you are all amazing women with great advice, and I want to thank you all! xo

THE BORNE-free bottles are great. Also the medela bottles (that come w/ the pump in style) have nipples you can buy and my baby really likes them. Good luck!

Hi E.,
I find the best bottles my daughter now 6 months took great to is Dr Browns. She is only on breastmilk and hand her 1st bottle at 8 wks. I tried other brands but she only likes the Dr Browns. It has an insert that is suppose to help with gas. I was going to see if I can switch her to Born Free because the BPA but maybe use a Dr Brown nipple. It may take time for her to take a bottle but try everyday so she is not dependent on you.

I used Dr. Brown's which are supposed to reduce gas. I offered this at 4 weeks and met success. Although I have friends that have tried playtex drop ins with newborns and they have worked just as well.

My cousin uses the MAM bottles for her breastfed son and says they're great. We use the playtex drop-in system (with Naturalatch nipples designed for breastfed babies) with our 5 month old and are pretty happy with it (playtex also sells a pump adapter so you can pump directly into the bottle liners).

Hi E.--the playtex nurser with a slow suck nipple is the one that is commonly recommended by lactation consultants because it is most like breastfeeding. I use it with my 5 month old daughter.

Hi -

We chose to use EvenFlo Glass bottles because they are BFA-free and cheap (available on Amazon.com). We also use the nipples that come with the bottles (natural rubber), but will upgrade to the silicone when she hits 6 months. Catherine had HORRIBLE colic for a while. A good friend figured out it was excessive gas. So, we upgraded to the silicone nipples for about 2 or 3 weeks, then downgraded back to the rubber nipples. The silicone are faster and easier to manipulate, so easier to eat and less air. The silicone helped teach her how to eat without bringing in a lot of air. We had to play with the ring part to make sure there weren't any leaks, but a tiny bit of air could get through to help with the drinking. Also, for the gas, we started sitting Catherine more upright during feedings (not so much cradling, until the very end). She would lean up against my "nook" (where the shoulder and arm meet) and booty/legs in my arm on my lap. My husband is better at the "nook" than I am. Once your DD can hold her head up a bit better, it will be easier for you to hold her in the "nook". This definitely helps with burping too. Also we make sure that the formula is fully in the nipple so she won't suck in air, but the milk isn't flooded all to the nipple end (more horizontal than angled). It's so she can better control how much milk she drinks and how much breathing between sips, and it's easier for the air to enter the bottle.

If you are uncomfortable with glass, these are supposed to be amazing: http://www.adiri.com/. All my friends on the West Coast are using them. Supposedly, the bottles are more like the breast than any other bottle. My husband wanted these because they are cool looking. These are A LOT more expensive than the glass EvenFlos.

I hope all this makes sense. Good luck -
A.

Hello E.,
I have been very happy with the Playtex Drop-ins system with Silicone nipples. They are easy to use, don't leak and don't have a zillion pieces to put together. The only piece you need to sterilize is the nipple the milk is placed in a pre-sterilized liner bag. When the news of many bottles containing toxins that can be released into the milk came out I found a list of safe bottles and this was on it. The bag collapses when the baby drinks eliminating the chance of them gulping down air. The lactation consultant that helped me advised me to use these because they are the closest available option to breast feeding.
If you are opposed to the disposable aspect of these, I would suggest the Born Free bottles. We use them also but now that my son is 14 months old we have converted the bottles into sippy cups. The nipples and sippy cup spouts are interchangeable so these grow with the baby which helps to justify their high price. My son loves the handles and I have never had a leak problem with these. With my older son we used the Dr.Browns and avent bottles. I can not tell you how many times we had horrible messes and both of these in the plastic version contain BPA.
Also babies can be finicky and don't always take to just any bottle. I would caution you against going out and buying more than one or two of any bottle till you know which one she will accept.
Good luck.

Hello there, E.. I have a 3 year old daughter and a 14 1/2 year old son. I used those playtex bottles with my son and he was gassy all the time. I had to keep my mylicon bottle handy at all times. With my daughter, I used the Dr. Brown bottles and I must say my daughter has never used any gas relief medicine. Other than the usual burp and gas passing, I had absolutely no problems with gas. It's a little more work than the regular bottles because they have the tube that you have to use with bottle but it is well worth the extra time you take washing the tube (it does come with a special brush to clean the tube).
I hope this info was useful to you.

I heard that the Born Free bottles are the only ones that have safe plastic. My 5 week old is breast fed and takes them fine.

Congratulations on your 5 week old joy!
I also nursed and alternated with pumped milk in Dr. Brown's which doesn't produce gas. My daughter liked it for a long time. They have them in every size.

By the way, every child likes different bottles (nipples) and pacifiers, so you may want to buy one only and see if she'll take to it. though im sure she will if you offer it at midday meal instead of first thing. gradual transition is key to raising a kid!

good luck. enjoy every second!

Hi E.-

It doesn't matter what kind of bottle you use, as long as your baby takes it. You may hear moms being very particular about what bottle they use, but that's only because each nipple shape is different and their baby may not accept any other bottle. Unless your little girl is like mine, which in that case it doesn't matter the shape of the nipple, if there is milk at the other end she'll take it.

PS make sure you've read up on how to store milk. In general:
room temp.=3-4 hours
fresh stored in refrig.=8 days
frozen=3 months
frozen, thawed=24 hours
(always at the back of freezer or refrig.)
once a bottle has been drank from you must throw out remaining milk within an hour or two

Good Luck!
S.

I wish I hhad tried them with the first two. she has had very little if any gas. they are not the esiest bottles to clead because of the parts, but it is worth it. I love them!!

My son (now 11 1/2 months) had horrible gas and reflux - we used Dr.Browns bottles and they are the best. They come in plastic or glass and even though they have more parts, they have a special system designed to eliminate gas.

I use Dr. Brown's glass bottles...my twins don't take the wide-neck bottles (like Born Free) and there are no anti-gas BPA-free plastic bottles with a standard size nipple. Green to Grow makes a cute standard nipple BPA-free bottle, but it lacks the anti-gas feature of the Dr. Brown's. I was a little hesitant to use glass at first, but they are working out well so far.

Hi E.,

I am on my second baby now (4 month old boy, 2 1/2 year old daughter) and both of my children used (son is still using) the medela milk storage bottles that I used to collect my milk in when pumping along with the nipples that came with them. This has always worked fine for me - no need for fancy or complicated bottles.
However, I would probably recommend feeding from the breast whenever you are able and only bottle feed when you are not with your baby otherwise you could diminish your milk supply especially since it's still early and your body is now establishing your supply based on your baby's demands.

Hope everything works out! Congratulations on your bundle of joy!

I am not a crunchy granola but really know that breastfeeding is best from the... you guessed it... breast. Its also a LOT easier for you. UES moms have one of the worst rates of breastfeeding among city neighborhoods (my friend, who is a nurse mentioned that to my UES friend once) and so READ all the benefits of breastfeeding, because the bottle is really the first step towards the end. Again, I can't tell you what a time saver it is to just pull up your shirt. no cleaning, no prepping, no warming and no plastic leaking, etc. and no thinking ahead. of course, I supplemented occassionally but really, try sticking to the breast. and congrats on the 5 week old.

Hi E.,
I use the Evenflo glass bottles - i think both buybuy baby and babies-r-us carry them. I wasn't too happy with the nipple selection, but my son got used to the few that I found (I have to admit I didn't search too hard). The bottles also attached directly to my pump (no adapter needed) - I have the medela pump in style. I found that to be much easier than freezing/defrosting/pouring into a bottle. In terms of gas, the bottles neither made it better or worse. That being said, I also tried the playtex drop-ins and small avent bottles, neither of which had an affect on my son's gas either.
Sorry - I don't have any experience with the MAM bottles!
