Need a Remedy for Teething Pain That Actually Works

My 20 month old son has just cut his first molar, and it was horrible. I hate seeing him in that much pain! I did give him some acetaminophen drops, but he hates them. I also finally got him to let me put some oragel in his mouth, and that soothed him enough to allow him to fall asleep. I would try ibuprofen, which he tolerates, but he's about to have surgery to remove a dermoid cyst, so he cannot take anything that thins the blood. When he was getting his first teeth I used the teething tablets and they worked great, but since they've been recalled I'm at a loss. Does the Hyland's teething gel work just as well? Also, what brand of acetaminophen do you use? I've got the Target Up&Up cherry flavor, but it must be horrible because he really fights me with it. (He also had a fever a few nights before the teething episode, where he was refusing the medicine, so it wasn't just because of the teething) Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The information I have to only give him the acetaminophen and not to give him ibuprofen came directly from the surgical nurse and also from the pediatrician.

Are the Humphrey's tablets still available, and if so, where can I get them? My son really responded well to the Hyland's brand teething tablets, so if there is an alternative that might be my best bet.

I always used Humphrey's teething tablets (they have chamomille to relax him) along with acetaminophen. Hope it helps!!

Our 15 month old is going through the same thing. She is miserable. I was reading your post and i thought that acetaminophen was the one that thinned blood and that ibuprofen did not . I will have to double check with the pharmacy tomorrow. Anyway, we used the teething tablets from walgreens till they were recalled back in Dec. Now I just use orajel and alot of popcicles and the smooth side of a spoon. also I know that you prob think they have outgrown the teething rings but they are still amazing to use, esp the ones you can freeze. My daughter is spending more time sleeping going from one nap to two the Dr said this is normal and a way to help deal with the pain. I hope that helps some.

That cherry flavor is terrible! It easily made my son throw up (I should say he easily threw up in general, though). He liked the grape flavor a bit better.

It may also be a control issue at that age. He may like it better if he has some control over the process, like he chooses which medicine (cherry or grape) and has his own dropper (filled with water, for example), etc...

PS: When I was desperate (when he had high fever and would throw up/refuse liquid medicine), I used suppositories (FeverAll brand). It is not pleasant to use, but, just to keep in mind for desperate times...

Baltic amber has helped many...http://hyenacart.com/stores/inspiredbyfinn/index.php?c=63...
I know it sounds a little hokey, but it seems to help my son.

Very frustrating about the Hyland's TT's, the colic tablets have similar ingredients in them, you could try those, they aren't gonna hurt him.
Humphreys's are still out there, but they don't disolve the same as Hyland's. :( Makes them harder to use.

HTH!

My husband mine's families always used Anbesol or vanilla extract (imitation or pure) and rubbed on sore gums. We still use it if we have a toothache ourselves.

I love the Up and Up flavorless acetaminophen.
Teething necklace. I actually have an anklet so that he won't keep playing with it. Baltic amber is a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reveler. I highly suggest those.
Humphreys makes teething tablets and my son LOVES them. I found them at Walgreens.

We use oragel naturals on my daughter and it seems to instantly alleviate the pain. It contains clove oil instead of whatever numbing agent is in the normal oragel. I've also used the homeopathic teething tablets in the past and they work well too but not as well as the oragel naturals did.

For acetominophen I buy dye free store brand but I use it as a last resort.

ibuprofen does not thin blood as far as I know...I think you have the two confused. PLEASE call the hospital and ask to speak to a nurses station, they will be able to advise you.
My pediatrician advised me to rub the ibuprofen Directly on the gums, said it was more effective, would help ease the pain and swelling.
We pretty much tried it all, I think my kiddo was addicted to the grape flavored orajel...
