Need a Recommendation for a Child Psychologist

We are taking my son to see someone about his behavior issues that will be able to help us. I have a list of doctors that my insurance gave, but don't know who I should call. His doctor asked if we had a history of bi-polar in our family because the way I described his behavior(we don't) and his preschool teacher thinks that he may have ADHD. So I am looking for some recommendations of who I should call.

JOANNE W GALLAGHER PHD
MURIEL S MCCLELLAN PHD

I work with Dr. Linda Caterino at ASU (she's a professor in the Educational Psychology program in addition to her private practice). She's a wonderful woman who truly cares about kids. She is also up to date on all of the current research due to her professorial position. She is a unique individual (speaks very quickly and sometimes overtalks you in an effort to get her point across), but I would highly recommend her.

Good luck!

I don't know any of those doctors but I would see if someone does so your insurance can pay. I only know of Dr. Melmed in Scottsdale at the Melmed Center. And if you ever go there make sure you get him, not one of his associate doctors. DR. MELMED is good, I know from personal experience with my little brother---I didn't care for other doctors there.

However, if you do go to one of the doctors on your list just be aware that each doctor has their own opinion and if you are not 100% comfortable with the doctor once you see him/her, go to another one. Find a doctor who is caring, helpful, who listens and has good bed-side manner. Mom knows best and you must be 100% confident and comfortable with what they are telling you.

I just have had so many medical mix-ups or mistakes happen to my family and friends that I am skeptic when it comes to doctors. There are great doctors out there, finding them can be hard. You are asking and providing a list for reference, that is good. Hopefully someone has a positive experience with one of those doctors on that list so you have a starting point.

I truly wish you the best.

have you ever read the book the Indigo Child by Doreen Virtue. Maybe you should. Your child could be an indigo child. Look it up on line and see if it fits. Indigo children are often diagnosed as being bipolar or ADHD or ADD and put on ritalin when it is really the wrong diagnosis. Indigo Children are very gifted children but have a hard time adjusting to their whereabouts unless they meet other children that are Indigo or Chrystal children. Doreen Virtue tells all about what they should be fed, how to tell, how to treat it, etc. Please check it out before you put out all the money for a child psychologist. Ms Virtue is a child and adult psychologist and much much more. Hope this helps. P.

Ken Goldberg has been a part of our family counseling for years. Our son is ADHD and he has helped significantly. I would highly recommend him.

Hello C.:

My daughter used to work for Wendy Hart, who has a good reputation and is well liked by her patients.

Be careful about giving your son any medication....we went
through the same thing with our son many years ago. Several teachers suggested that he may have ADHD, so of course we went to several psychologist's for professional opinions. At the time, many of his friends were taking medication for behavioral issues...seems it was easy to label children and medicate them, rather than working through the behavioral issues. Of the four professionals we saw, none of them could be certain that our son had a legitimate medical issue, so we didn't give him any medication. Instead we worked hard to help him, we took parenting classes, and learned new patience to get through the ups and downs. Some of the kids that took meds, had serious side-effects and worse problems.

Get second and third opinions, listen to your heart and you'll do the right thing! Good Luck!
