Need a New Vet

Good evening ladies. I am in need of a new vet. I don't think I have ever walked out of our vet's office for less than $300 and that includes once just going in for vaccines for one golden retriever. This last time I took the dog in, after discussing with the doc via e-mail that he had suddenly started urinating in the house--4 times in one week-- a bladder/urinary tract infection was suspected. This visit was $400.00, after they ruled out the bladder infection, she wanted to do test for "cushings" disease, this consisted of a $170 CBC. After waiting 3 days for the results and calling twice to get them, she finally called me back and says that he has the classic signs but they will need more test to be certain--another blood test! Didn't we just do that?! I know there are good vets out there that can use all the knowledge they got from vet school to make an accurate accessment of the problems before running blind tests--can anyone recommend a good vet that is fair with the charges and need of tests. Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

We received a call from our "old" vet wanting to do another $300 blood test, to test for cushings disease. However, we had already schedule an appointment with one of the vets one of the great Moms on this site referred us to. Today our dog was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection--based on the test results of our old vet and the new vet visi+antibiotics was less than $70.00. Wow what a difference. We had been using our previous vet for over 2 years and had never left for less than $300 even if we were just going in for vaccines. Thanks again to all you Moms that helped us find a new vet--we so appreciate all your advice and recommendations.

The same thing happened to me. The Vet I used to go to on Stuebner Airline was very expensive and the office staff was rude. I switched to My Family Vet on Kuykendahl. They will spend the time with you, the cost is reasonable and everyone is friendly.

I don't know where you live....but if you are anywhere close to this guy....I recommend him. Dr. Powell at the FM 1488 Animal Medical Center is amazing. His prices are reasonable, but more than that he really cares about my animals. When my dog threw out both her ACL's I was told by many other doctors that the surgery would cost over $5000.00 for both and they wouldn't do it until I could pay in full. Dr. Powell took my girl in and did the surgery and told me we would deal with the cost, the main thing was to get my sweet girl better. He ended up charging me a fraction of the cost and Alice (my dog) loves him....when we leave to go to the vet She jumps in the car wagging her tail, ready to go! http://www.1488animalmedicalcenter.com/

I can't say enough nice things about Dr Powell. I drive 30 minutes to go see him!

My family Vet off Kuykendahl is GREAT. Phone number is ###-###-#### They're caring and wonderful people. Dr. Scott was who originally opened the place and we've been going there for at least 5 years after running into the same thing with a vet in The Woodlands. They're very reasonable and all the vets there seem to be knowledgeable. they even asked me to bring Tiko back for visits so they could get to know one another other than her once a year (at no charge - just stop in and say hello)!!! How many other vets have EVER said that to us??????? NONE!!

I went through the same thing! Not sure which area you are in but I found a very reasonable/great place... Angel's Hospital on Kuykendahl, about 5 miles south of Woodlands Pky. near The Woodlands. Let me know if you need more info.

Hi there,

Not sure where you are located, but I use Steeplechase Animal Hospital on 1960 near Jones road. I LOVE their staff and Dr. Cruzen is THE BEST! He gets right down on the floor with my little Chiwawa! Not sure how he is comaparison to other places cost-wise, but he seems pretty comparable. Not pushy but wants the best for the pet. Anyway, we are very happy with them so good luck in your search!

If you are in the Houston area, you can check out the North Loop Pet Clinic, 713-697-PETS. It is a low cost pet clinic. Don't expect anything fancy, but the vet is an awesome doctor. She truly cares about animals. Good luck and I hope your dog feels better soon.

I go to Ricardo Caballero at Cypress Vet Hospital. We live 45 minutes away from his office, but he's worth the drive. I have a dog who had been to at least 4 other vets for an ear infection that wouldn't go away and Dr. Caballero had it taken care of in one visit. His number is ###-###-####. Good Luck!

We use Fairbanks Vet Care on Fairbanks North Houston Rd. I drive past their office on the way to work so I drop my pets off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. The vet will call me with questions. If we need to talk further we set something up for after work.

Their office staff is very caring and the vets on staff are great. Their number is ###-###-####.

I am in the Lakewood Forest Area near 249 - and we love our vet - also the grooming services offered at Glenwood Falls Animal Hospital. I hear they have also opened a clinic near Blackhorse Ranch off 290. Here's the link http://www.glenwoodfallsanimalhospital.com/

Wow! I thought our vet charges were high! Not even close to yours! We really like our vet. He is David Wulf (no kidding!), and he runs the Willowbrook Animal Hospital on Hwy. 249 near North Houston Rosslyn. You didn't mention what part of town you're in, but he has another clinic on the east side of town. His number is ###-###-####. Shots usually run between $8 and $20, with a required physical examination that runs about $40. Annual exams can run up into the hundreds because of all the bloodwork, but that's only once a year. Hope this helps!

By the way, we have TWO dogs that need shots and exams, so we try really hard to have them get their checkups on different months!
