Need a Great Vacuum Cleaner

I am looking for recommendations for a new vacuum cleaner. I hate the one I have, and don't want to pick another lemon. Here's what I need:
- Lightweight and easy to maneuver around the house
- Easy to use on stairs
- Works equally well on carpet and tile
- Doesn't sound like a jet engine when you turn it on
- Bagless with effective filtration system
- Works equally well on pet hair and dirt
- Not outrageously expensive
Am I asking too much, or does someone out there have a vacuum like this that you can recommend? Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

I love a dyson and love it! No filters and can curve around circled edges. I enjoy watching how much dust and dirt it picks up:) The model I got is called the animal. I bought it at Bed Bath and beyond and used that 20% off coupon that you get in the mail every week:)
Good luck

I have a Sears Kenmore vacuum and love it. I tried all those bagless vacuums in the past and was going through them all the time. Whenever I had to take them into the repair shop, the tech there told me that 95% of the vacuum they repair are bagless and suggested I get a bag vacuum. I did and have been using the Sears for almost 7 years now with no problems. The lights even still work and haven't burnt out!

I haven't tried the Dyson as most of the responses are about. I never had that much money to spend on a vacuum, so I needed to find one that was great but less expensive.

Good luck.

Dyson. They are worth the money. Don't know how much the newer ones are but we paid around $300 at Target in Colorado. Now, they've come out w/a new one that swives on a ball. They are bagless, however you do have to empty the container but it's quick, easy, and painless! It's also quiet and picks up anything. And, it's not too heavy. I got mine in 2003 or 04 and I LOVE it!!!! Plus, it comes in fun colors!

I got a Dyson at Sams about 3 years ago for about 350.00. I love it. It's the best investment I've ever made. It has everything on your requirements list, except that it does make SOME noise (I'm not sure what you mean by "jet engine"). They have different models, and yes, you can spend a lot more than the 350.00 that I spent, but you don't have to get their top of the line model or their "latest and greatest".

The advise you got about the one from Sears might be worth looking into, too.

I have a Miele vacuum (canister style) that I love for tile & rugs, but I use my upright for carpeting. There is an attachment for carpeting that I don't have. (My previous house was all hardwood & tile). I went to the vacuum store on old 183 in Cedar Park who sell Miele. I would definitely go and try them out. They have a model that works great on both tile & carpet. No, they are not bagless, but are relatively quiet, compared to the Hoover upright I use. Expect to spend at least $700 - $900 for a high quality vacuum. The store also carries another brand of upright vacuums that are worth checking out. You can try them out in the store and decide for yourself about the noise level, ease of use, etc. before you invest. I know you want cheap, but remember you get what you pay for.

I love my Dyson. We had bought other vacuum cleaners in the past just to have them break down in no time. We decided to spend the money (they are definitely pricey), but I feel like it was a worthwhile investment. We've had ours for 4 years and I don't see it kicking it anytime soon. Bagless vacuum are going to be high priced anyway. It isn't particularly heavy and when you get used to it, works well on the stairs. I could go on and on...Good Luck!

I have been looking at vacuum cleaners as I need to replace the one we have (which I received as a graduation present from high school - i.e. way too long). According to Consumer Reports, Sear's Kenmore Progressive 35922 vacuum ranked the highest even against the Dyson. And the best part, the Kenmore Progressive is only $250.00. So for all those who say you need to spend $700+, I would encourage them to check out the results that Consumer Reports shows for upright vacuums.
