Need a Gift for 5 Year Old Boy

My BIL recently became engaged to a woman who has 3 kids from a previous marriage. We are getting Christmas gifts for her kids. I am stumped on what to get for her 5 year old son. I have only met the kids once. I have tried talking to my BIL about it several times -- asking him to have the mom call me or to let me know what the kids would like. He keeps saying he'll call me back "next week". I've been asking since Thanksgiving. So, I'm on my own. I figured out a gift for each of her girls. Can anyone recommend something for a 5 year old boy? I was thinking maybe a game -- like Cranium's Cadoo.

What can I do next?

My oldest son will be 5 next month. He enjoys puzzles, movies, books, and starting to get into games. Someone mentioned Leap Frogs movies. We have three, Word, Letters, and Math. He really enjoys watching all three of those. They are good because they are learning while watching a movie. You might even find a few beginning to read books. He also likes to draw and color, so even paper, markers, pencils with different characters on them, coloring books, paint. Playdough is also always good. I hope all the suggestions help.

How about some great books?? My nephew (kindergarten age) and my own boys (15 months and 2 1/2 years) love a bunch of books by Usborne Books. You can check them out and order online at http://www.usbornebooklist.com . They are even running a sale starting tomorrow (Fri 12/07) through the weekend!

Some of Jacob's favorites (the kindergartener) include the phonics books (Ted and Friends) and the Pirate Things to Make and Do Kid Kit - - this kit included a great activity book with some supplies that he needed to make various pirate projects.

Let me know if you want more recommendations - we own a BUNCH of these books - and love them!

Hi J.. I have a boy who will be 5 in a few months. He is into Spiderman and Transformers. He's just now getting into wanting to play board games, Chutes and Ladders, memory games, because he's finally got the attention span for them. If he's learning his letters, Leap Frog Letter Factory is good, or if he's learning to read, they have Word Factory. My son loves music and seems to pay attention to things with music better, so these have really helped him. These are just some ideas, hope they help.

May I suggest interactive dress up for him and YOU. Would be a wonderful way for you to bond with the child and yet having another male to play pirates, cops and robbers or even cowboy and indians with. If you can incorperate one of todays cartoon heros that would be even better. Spider Man has been a favorite of my 7 yr old sons life for 3 years now. He loves wrapping Mommy up with spider goo from his special spidy gloves. Easy to clean up also. If you choose pirates of the caribians they have great dress up things. Bob the builder is Mommy little helper when ever you boys need to fix things for Mommy. Don't limit yourself to board games.

Have you checked out the Discovery Store?
I find gifts there for all the kids in my family from 6 months to 8 years old.
They have a cool spiral thingy to draw that I got for my 5 y/o niece, it's 4 y/o and up.

PS, I saw several price ranges too...

I have a 5 year old boy! He's totally into anything superheroes and there are some pretty neat lego (actually mega block - same thing, though) Spiderman sets. The Spiderman version of Operation topped his letter to Santa. He likes board games - connect 4, sorry, trouble, monopoly (regular version) and sequence for kids. As for toys, he really likes Transformers, Star Wars and any legos. He also likes puzzles... the ones in the small boxes that have 100 or 150 pieces.

When my son was that age he loved the little legos that were kits to create cars, boats, etc. The pieces are small so you have to be careful if there are little ones, by they are quite a hit. My nephew liked them too. My son still has his.

My oldest son is now 9 but several years ago, all the rage for the youngsters was Junie B. Jones books. All the kids around here wanted them. At 5 he will be happy with almost anything. Really! Remote control trucks are a big hit. What I did one year for all the kids in the family was to buy these gold ornaments from Wal Mart. They have like a banner area on them to print stuff. I bought a dremel and engraved their names on them. I told them that as they accepted my gift with all its imperfections to remember that I will always accept them with all their imperfections. The kids really liked it. Of course DVD's are always a hit. What about a game like Twister? I bet mom would appreciate something like that to wear out all the kids at once. Well, I hope some of this helps. Hard to remember what my son liked 4 yrs ago. Good Luck! Shannon
