Need a Better Umbrella Stroller

We're looking to upgrade from our Peg Prego Aria to something that's a bit lighter and smaller and most importantly steers better! (If anyone's thinking of getting the Aria, I don't recommend it. Parts fell off and the wheels are constantly getting stuck in the wrong direction.) I'm looking for something around $100 or less that has the basics of a good stroller - decent canopy, easy to fold, some storage, and is on the taller side for a 6'4" daddy! Don't need it to accomodate a car seat or infant. Please let me know if you have something that has worked well for you!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the helpful responses! A lot of people have said they're interested in hearing what I got back, and I have to say that the overwhelming "winner" was anything by Maclaren, especially the Volo and Triumph. As for us, we went to BRU planning on getting a Volo and ended up getting a random Silver Cross Micro that was a floor model. (Silver Cross appears to be another British brand, similar to Maclaren.) It's almost identical to the Volo but has a padded seat insert and slightly larger wheels. Thanks again for the great recommendations and good luck to all you other shoppers!

We have the Maclaren Volo. I think they retail for about $125, but you can usually find good deals online. (I have even heard that people have seen them at Marshall's.) They are incredibly lightweight and easy to use. I have never had a problem with steering. Also, I am fairly tall (5'8"), and I don't have to stoop to push it (like with most umbrella strollers). It's a very high quality strollers, and I think you'd be very happy with it.

I had the same issues with the Aria. What a waste of money!!! I recently just bought a Maclaren Triumph and it's fabulous!! So much better than the Aria. The Triumph is a little pricey though (around $175), but the Volo model the other moms mentioned is good too. I saw the Volo at Target for $99.

You can not go wrong with a Maclaren!!!! I say buy one of the nicer ones because you will never use another one once you have it. Sport quest or better because they have more recline. I did lots of comparisons (charts and everything) and decided on the Maclaren. Then we took it to NYC and I was shocked to see hundreds of them - like 90% that we saw on the streets were Maclaren - usually Triumphs. Best features - light weight and super easy to steer - even with a heavy child in them. Many strollers appear easy to steer until you get a child in them. I tested that out myself and was shocked at the difference. You will love the Maclaren!

Oh and if you ever plan on going to Disney World or something and need a full coverage canopy, take a look at buying a PROTECT A BUB sunshade for it. They are great! http://www.protect-a-bubusa.com/sunshades.shtml

I have a Combi EX..its alright. It folds in and has a strap to carry it when you arent using it. It is really light weight and has a cup holder for the baby. It has SOME storage but its kinda hard to put anything in there. The height is ok. The steering is ok..

We bought a Chicco brand one and are really happy with it. The basket is a bit small, but it's a small stroller!!! It folds nicely, has taller handles, light weight. Babies R Us or Online sells them anywhere. Also, the MacLaren's are nice too, we just thought they were a bit overpriced, but really nice.

We bought a Maclaren from toys r us and love it. It is about 11 lbs, folds easly, has a good canopy, has a decent basket underneith, has a lap and/or harness for keeping them in, and is big enough for my son that is 4. My husband is 6'2" and has no problems with it. You can even buy attachment peices like cup holders and trays. They range from $99+. Good luck.

We bought the Chicco Capri Stroller for my husband's truck since we keep the larger one in my car. It's been great! I'm not sure if it will accomodate a tall person, since we're not tall people, but I highly recommend it otherwise. Here is the link to it: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2265744

Good luck!

We LOVE our Graco IPO (Latte color)!

Sierra has never once complained or cried as I strapped her in. Everytime we use it in a crowd we get asked what brand our stroller is! I've even taken it shopping to Target and filled the basket with a bunch of items.

I'm 5'8" and hubby is 6'. Ergonomic handles and you can even steer with one hand.

Here's the link to the 4 star reviews at BRU.

They just released a new color. Enzo IPO.

The best thing is the price - only $80!!! AND if you have a 15% off coupon or some other BRU coupon, you can get it for a good deal.

I would try the Maclaren strollers. I have the Volo model and love it. It is taller so my husband can push it with out leaning over and he is 6'2". They are not cheap but I have had mine for five years and is still going strong. Plus it holds over 50 pounds.

Hi L.! I have a Chicco Capri Stroller. The handles are a longer than a typical umbrella stroller and it has much better support for the baby. It is $59.99 at Babiesrus. I love it!

I love my Maclaren, which I got for about $100. at Target last year to take to England with us. It's sturdy and maneuverable, even in crazy London, and (once you get the hang of it), it's very easy to collapse and deploy. And it's rated up to 45 or 50 lbs., so your child won't outgrow it overnight. My youngest is 4 1/2, and I would still throw it in the car if we were going out for day that required a lot of walking.

We have a Chicco. It was about $80 and is small enough to fit in the overhead on a plane. My husband is about as tall as yours and has no problems. Storage space isn't as good as our big stroller, but umbrella strollers usually aren't designed with storage space in mind.

Personally, I would steer clear of the Combi brand. It's a great stroller, but not made for tall people. I kept stepping on the wheels and I'm shorter than your husband.

I use the Chicco Umbrella stroller from babies r' us & I love it. It doesn't have huge ammounts of storage, but I find it sufficient & it was fifty something dollars so well under your budget of one hundred.

You can't go wrong with a Maclaren. There are several different models and I believe on some models the handles extend. We have a Techno XT and it's handles do extend. However, my dad who is 6'1" has never even needed to extend the handles. I know that the Right Start in Dallas (Inwood Village) carries several of their models so you could check it out there, but may find cheaper prices online.

You are totally describing the Maclaren Volo stroller. I bought one last year for my almost three year old, and I LOVE it! My husband is 6'5" and he can even walk comfortably with it. It folds up and has a shoulder strap. I can't remember how much it weighs, but I think it is right around 10 pounds. I can carry it easily. It is rated for up to 65 pounds--so it should last a while. The only thing I have found that I don't like is there is no drink holder--but you can buy one as an accessory--I just haven't gotten around to it. The Volo comes in different "levels" (ie prices) and I got one of the more basic models and paid right around $100 for it at Babies r Us.

We have Eurotrend Sport by BabyTrend and it's only disadvantage is that it is heavy if you want to compromise it that direction. We were looking for a wider umbrella stroller and both parents are tall and this one worked really well for us for the last 2.5 years. It also survived two overseas trips US - Europe. It also steers really well so that I can, for example, put my 3.5 year old in it together with our bags and steer while carrying 16 month old in the other hand.
Good luck in finding the best one for you!

The trunk of my car couldn't accommodate most strollers until I found a Combi collapsible stroller. Worked great for us, durable and lightweight and the seat can recline to different angles. However, not sure about how well it will work for a 6'4" daddy...? Well, I guess you can check it out (got ours at USA Baby).

You can't go wrong w/ a MacLaren. I have both the TechnoXT single stroller and the Twin Techno. They are both the top of the MacLaren line for both the single and double strollers, but I didn't pay top of the line prices. I highly recommend eBay when you decide what you want to buy. I bought both of mine for less than 50% off retail prices, brand new in the box. There are many reliable dealers on eBay who sell nothing other than strollers. If I hadn't saved so much money on eBay, I wouldn't have been able to afford either of them!! If you go the eBay route, be sure to checkout the sellers ratings to be sure they are a reliable seller. The MacLaren website is www.maclarenbaby.com. Then click on "USA", then "buggies". I used this to compare models, then hit stores to try them out, then hit eBay to buy. For the more expensive models, you tend to have to go to specialty stores. I looked at The Right Start. I think you can click on a link on the MacLaren website to find stores in your area. If you don't want to shop eBay, check out Ebates as a way to save money, www.ebates.com. They send you a rebate check at the end of each quarter for using their link to purchase through online stores that they sponsor. Great way to shop online and save money.
