My husband and I are trying to think of a unique baby name for our daughter due in August. I kind of like classic names like Scarlett and he likes Katie. We still haven't found anything we agree on. It definately has to be unique...any suggestions? Our last name is M..

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

A friend in my office just named her little girl Kyra, which could be pronouced either as "Kira" with the long i or "Keera" with the long e sound. She uses the "Keera" pronounciation, but a girl I went to high school with used the "Kira". Kyra Kate M.. Too cute!

How about the name Aurora and call here Rori. It's an old name that exudes elegance, yet also unique because you don't hear it very often. I wanted to name my daughter this after Sleeping Beauty, but my husband didn't like it. She was always my favorite Disney Princess. We ended up naming our daughter M..:-) Aurora M. is a beautiful name, and she would love knowing she was named after a Princess.

I always get tons of complements on our little girl's name--Karena (soft "e") we should have spelled it Karyna. It is a take on the Russian name Corina. It means pure and innocent. We love it! Good luck!

I have a friend by the name of Falayn (pronounced 'Phal-lan' or 'Pha-llon). It is a name that I don't hear very often. I am expecting in early September, so I've been on the hunt. I try to research the meaning of each name as well. It is Gaelic (I think). It means superiority; descended from ruler.

We call our daughter Katie but her real name is Kathryn Elizabeth. Classic but she can be called katie or as she gets older she can have different nicknames.. I like the name devon which can be for boy or girl. But i like the class names as well, my other one is Erica Elayne.

If you want unique, then Katie would be out! But, it is still a cute name. Scarlett is interesting, but I think I prefer Charlotte. You had some good suggestions here... some of them are becoming popular.. I know a million Avery's! And like Nevaeh-- my niece named her daughter this and since then, I talk to a lot of people who know babies that have the name. We fought her on the name b/c of references like "Nivea" body cream and such :) Just think all of the teasers through before you settle! We wanted to name our daughter Reece, but all of the old-fashioned types in my family vocally renounced it as a viable option (boys' name, etc.)... so at the last minute, in a fit of pregnancy hormone anxiety, we went with Caitlyn (very common, but it combined letters from my other daugter's name).... we never called her Caitlyn! That isn't who she was-- she is Reece! And you know what, my family learned to deal with it! :) Go with your gut instinct. You might look up the American Girls (very popular series of kids' books and dolls, each from a different era in history)-- they have some classic names. Think of your interests and what/who inspires you-- sometimes a variation of a name works, like Katia rather than Katie. Good luck!

well, katie isn't very unique.. so i wouldnt go with that one... scarlett isnt exactly unique either but it isnt very common.. and that sounds cute with your last name

unique to mean is like what hollywood people name their kids and look at what the top names are for 08' and DONT pick one those

i have my names depending on what i;m having.. and i think they are unique without being weird and that is the best way to go

I wanted to name my daughter...

Alauradannan. Alaura for short.

We also liked:

Alyssa
Mia
Nina

Middle name was going to be:

Trinidad after my grandmother which means the Holy Trinity.

We ended up naming her Avery Rita

The middle name is after my mother who suffered a stroke while I was five months preg.

Avery means Nobility and my name means The Nobel One.

So I thought it was cute that the Nobel one would be giving birth to Nobility. Also her initials spell out A.R.T....so she is our little work of ART!

Good luck and have fun picking out a name!

Hi C. congrats on the new addition. Well first off Scarlett and Katie are both great names. They also have a ring to them for the both of you because they came from the heart. My daughter will be 16 in September and we named her Deon Kerri. My husband and I named her and she is as beautiful as the name we gave her.So good luck and keep on searching your heart because when time comes her name will stick out at you like a sore thumb. Good luck and God bless.

Below is a copy of my response to another mom asking for girl names.

Some of my favorite names:

Aurora - - the baby in the movie "Willow"

Aurelia - - the beautiful, cleaning woman in the movie "Love Actually"

Micah - - (pronounced like "Mike-a") a cute, little girl with blond curls that was in one of my gymanstics class for 5-yr.-olds way back in 1982. I'll never forget us laughing the day that she told us that it was her birthday and she was 4!! Her mom had snuck her into an older class - - but she was so good for her age and doing great! She was unbelievably cute!

Katie - - my own daughter's name, which I got from the Disney classic movie: "Darby O'Gill and the Little People." The movie was set in Ireland and I remember watching it when I was only 4 or 5 years old. The banshee terrified me! My mom said my sister and I used to sing the song from that movie, "Oh, she's my dear, my darling one . . ." and we only saw the movie one time at the drive-in in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, sometime in the early 1960's. My own Katie turns 21 next month! Seems like yesterday that she was born and her daddy leaned in close to look at her and said softly, "So it's Katie, then?" I nodded yes as I held her in my arms for the first time.

Have fun with your new baby!!! Enjoy each and every moment - - even the day that she will drag a jar of spaghetti sauce out of the cabinet and break it on your kitchen floor! Deep breath . . . and say, "I will miss these days."

Well, since you both like the names you have chosen, why not name her after Vivian Leah's character in the movie Gone With The Wind? She was Katie Scarlett O'hara (I'm sure the Katie was probably short for Catherine). Anyway, in the movie, only her father called her Katie Scarlett:-)
Anyway, my daughter's name is Julianna Paige and we've had endless compliments over her nine years of life about what a classy and feminine name it is. Best wishes with your decision!
