Hi! I have had neck and back pain since the birth of my daughter on september 21st. I had a csection but a botched spinal. They stuck me about a dozen times in the lowr back with the needle. I was in greta pain and I felt they were doing a crappy job. The nurse was holding me at odd angles and kept telling me to relax and straighten up but each time I would she would she would push back down into uncomfortable positions. I had 2 people an anestesiologist and my doctor try the spinal but neigther one of them could do it so they had to put me under general. Since then Ive had neck and back pain seems to be made worse by stress. Ive told my family doctor and shes has gaven me muscle relaxers wich do nother but make me sleepy and tramodol wich is a pain med but only relaxes me a little and doesnt take all the pain away. My OB doctor said my lower back pain was due to weak abdominal muscles but I dont think that it. Im not overweight actually back down to prepregnacy weight. I think my back is out of alignment and I should see a chiropractor but dont think MC+ Healthcare will cover. Any ideas on whats wrong or what I should do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ive went to my doctor. I told her all the symptoms I was having. She thought I could have some kind of arthritis. Osteoarthritus or rhuemetoid is what she mentioned but she had some blood test ran to see if I had any inflamation in my body or if I had rhuematoid and she checked other things. Also did an exray on my neck and shoulders because thats where the pain is the most. Ill go back for the results on the 18th. I told he about the spinal but she didnt seem to be concerned that that was causing my problems. The crappy thing is both my parents have rhuemitoid arthritis my mom who is not quite 50 yet has had it for a few years and my dad whos fifty two was diagnosed a year ago.

D.,

I had an epidural, best thing I could have done during the birth of my youngest. I had backaches until she was about 6 months old. I still have them sometimes, I think that is a side effects that isn't mentioned in all the paperwork. When I was pregnant with my oldest I had no clue that I was in labor and actually asked the dr. for an epidural when I was 6 cm dialated. he told me no. please keep me posted. ____@____.com

Just being pregnant can throw your back all out, not to mention going through labor and having all the difficulties getting a spinal that you had. I feel for you, my epidural didn't take and they had to go ahead with my emergency c-section! OUCH!!

If your insurance won't pay for chiropractic care, try going to the Cleveland Chiropractic College. It is inexpensive and they do good work! That's where my father-in-law goes.

I had two rib heads out of place after having my son and could barely breathe. Two trips to my chiropractor had me back on my feet and feeling great. I wouldn't take pain killers or muscle relaxers because I was breast feeding, so chiropractic care was a God-send!

Keep us posted on how you're feeling.

well after i had my last child I had that but also had major headache with it and i have to have a blood patch because they screwed up my block and i had spinal fluid leaking so the blood patch clotted the leak and it was all better so if you have headache with it that is something to consider but If you dont I would go see a lawyer named Todd strong he deals with that stuff and the employee that gave you the block is the one they would go after he also will recommend a chiroprator

Hi D.,

I had a bad labor and delivery with my first child. She got stuck in the birth canal and, after three hours of pushing with no results, they FINALLY decided to use the forcips. Unfortunately for me, the doctor who was delivering my daughter was also delivering twins down the hall so he was back and forth.

As you might imagine, my back was screwed up and got worse over the years. I finally went to a chiropractor and found out I had a single vertibrae out of alignment which was putting pressure on my spinal cord. Caused all kinds of problems.

Working out really helped as well as seeing the chiropractor. Strengthening the lower back muscles was key to keeping that vertebrae in place. I do pilates at home using a video.

Another idea you might persue is using EFT. Sounds like you had a very emotionally and physically trying labor/delivery. Sometimes our emotional state during times of stress can cause lasting physical symptoms. Here is a link to the list of EFT articles on back pain: http://www.emofree.com/articles.aspx?id=7

Good luck and I hope your back/neck feel better soon.

M. :)

I wouldn't seek a chiropractor's help unless you advise them about the botched spinal block. You could be having lingering trauma from the repeated invasion. Plus, I haven't had a c section but I really do think there's a difference in your muscle tone afterward. You may be sitting, standing and walking differently and your pubic bone may not have resumed it's normal width and rigidity so it's entirely possible that you do need to tone your muscles. Getting back to pre-pregnancy weight does not mean you're back to pre-pregnancy muscle tone. It's only been 2.5 months and it could take a year to retone those muscles. Try pilates. Subsequent babies are notorious for stretching out more muscles and ligaments creating more stresses on the skeleton afterward.

A great chiropractor in the area is Dr. Jena Jenssen. She takes insurance, and if yours doesn't work she can probably work with you or talk with you. Her number is ###-###-####, and her email is ____@____.com luck!

I had terrible neck/shoulder pain from looking down while nursing, holding the baby, and lower back pain from the extra weight of holding the baby. This was despite losing the preg weight immediately- so your Dr. may be right, your lower back pain could be worsened by the loss of ab muscle that inevitably happens during pregnancy. Try some gentle stomach exercises and correct posture, but if it doesn't help, keep talking to your Dr. about it. Good luck, and good for you for taking care of yourself!

Hi D...

Get a second opinion!! Now, before it gets worse. Trust me on this..I had epidurals with all 3 of mine and there are some serious side effects that come with all the wonderful numbness. I just had an MRI done and found out that one of my disks is herniated, and another is bulging. Get an MRI done, it will show exactly what's wrong, then they can work on fixing it. If your doctor wont do it, get another who will. The longer you go, the harder it will be to fix. Pain killers and muscle relaxers don't fix the problem, they just cover the symptoms. Epidurals are dangerous, they can cause permenant damage, sometimes even paralysis. Make sure you see someone who will take you seriously. Hope it gets better.

D., I would see the chiropractor. I have been seeing one for a long while. Childs Chiropractic in Norman. He will tell you if he can fix it or not. They also tend to work with you on payments if your insurance doesn't cover it. He is very good. I wouldn't recommend it if he wasn't.

I'm not sure where you live, but Dr Ryan Hanson is a Chiropractor in Edmond, OK. He's less expense than most & he's really good. I've been going to him for almost 3 years. He's doing a special this month for new patients. If you bring in 10 (i think) canned goods, you can get 1 free adjustment & a free exray. If you call, they can give you the details.

I would call around and see how the pricing is. You may want to consider taking warm baths until you have the chance to get something done. Aleeve will also go a long way. I have had 3 c-sections, and I am definitely stiff. You may also watch how you are picking up your baby. Maybe you are not staying aligned and that is adding more stress. Invest in a hot pad, you will need it over the years anyway. Make sure to put a pillow between your legs at night... I had to do this until about 4 months postpartum. My hips were causing all kids of stress. Once your hormones level out you will probably feel better.

I had the so call wonderful epidural with my 2nd daughter and she is 21 months now and still have lower back pain. I ended up with a spinal headache and I should have known because it felt nothing like the 1st epidural I had with my 1st daughter. I ended up staying in the hospital for 4 days with a normal vaginal birth because I couldnt get out of bed or lift my head because I thought it was going to expload... I am expecting again and will not be getting an epidural this time no matter what! I see a chiropractor every 2 weeks and it is helping I hope this helps...

Hi D., I had the same problem and I think it was a combination of a bad spinal and weak abdominals. I went to the Dr. with my problem and he said that my right hip was and inch and a half higher than the left. He referred me to a physical therapist (which ins. paid part of) and we discovered my core muscles were shot. My last baby was 9lbs. 13ozs. and I'm a small person 5' 2" 110lbs. and that helped alot! If you can't get to a physical therapist try exercises that work on your core muscles, it's alot of Hard work but it makes the pain better. Get it taken care of because I waited till 8 months had gone past and it only got worse. Good Luck and take care! ;)

When medicine just covers up the cause with pills, you need someone to help you find the symptom. Chiropractors have been mentioned, but another choice is a good physical therapist. To get P.T. paid for, you need your MD to "prescribe" it, but they usually are willing. I had back, neck & shoulder problems for a year and a half until someone recommended PT and it saved my life! Good luck.

I think you should see a chiropractor, too. Check around your town, I bet if you actually talked to them about what is happening to you and tell them what a money situation is for you, they would help you get a payment plan or something. I am a massage therapist, and I work with chiropractors sometimes, and they really want to be able to help people, and I have seen them have lower rates for people with no insurance. That said, If they had to mess with your spine alot, I would get that checked out, because they could have caused some chronic problems, or the anesthesia could have, too.

My chiropractor said....anyone who has ever given birth, needs to be adjusted. What your body is put through during child birth is sure to throw something out of place. Try to find one who can feel where you are out of place....instead of taking costly x-rays. That will lower your cost considerably. Hope this advice helps. S.
