Natural Products to Relieve Chronic Constipation in Kids

My 8 year old has trouble with constipation. The pharmacist recommended miralax but I wouldn't want to use it for more than a week after researching it. It also says to ask a doctor before using in children. Does anyone have any suggestions for natural products she could use long-term?

My husband's whole family has this issue! When I cook, I use milled flax seed. It is great, you just dump some in and the whole family gets extra fiber & omega 3-oils. I told my ped. that I was using on my 2 year old daughter and she told me it was a great idea. This works for my family, so if you want give it a try!

all the 'p' fruits are good: papaya, pineapple, peaches, plums, prunes ... also freshly squeeze orange juice makes the trick with my daughter. I was told to warm it up in the microwave for like 15 sec. and then to drink it, and i don't know why, but it worked! good luck! My children's doctor also recommended miralax, and I use it when everything else fails. but as long as I keep a diet full of fruits, my daughter does well now...

we tried it all! the best medicine we've found is pear nectar...second best is apple juice, watered down a bit and we eat yogurt everyday. it's cured the issue.

You've gotten a lot of advice here, but I'll add my 2 cents. I asked my dr. about it for my son. He said apricots, but my son doesn't like them. Also, warm apple juice helps. I've taken to give him a fiber supplement to his juice to help he be regular. But my secret ingredient that helps him the most whenever he has trouble (sometimes my son holds it in because of the pain and of course that makes it worse) is chocolate. I give him half a bar of chocolate and wait. But lately he has been eating better, but I will keep up the fiber supplement because that helps him not get to the point of being constipated.

you could always mix a little dark corn syrup into something hot like oatmeal or into a glass of milk.

well, for me personally, grape juice does the trick :) I tried prune juice and could not choke it down...however, my son used to have BM issues and his GI told us to use milk of magnesia. It doesn't have any kind of residual effects like dependency, cramping, or diarhea. I'm not sure what dosage you would give an 8 year old...but they do have a kid's formula. I highly recommend getting the fruit flavored kind (it's either strawberry or cherry). Good luck!!

Prune Juice. My daughter loves it. We get the langers and MIX about 1/3 Prune Juice with apple juice. Keeps her nice and regular. So regular that we can adjust the mix as needed to well, I'm sure you get the picture

Dried prunes (just don't tell them what they are)
Raisins, lots of water.

ANYTHING HIGH IN FIBER

Keep kiddo from eating excess of cheese, crackers

H., try Plum Smart juice. It is plum juice, instead of prune juice and it contains probiotics, magnesium and fiber but it is crystal clear. It is absolutely yummy and my son LOVES it. I would recommed no more than 8 oz. per day for a 9 year-old. It is easy on the tummy and seems to make the digestion process more "normal". Do let others in your house know that it is for "digestive health" or they may be tempted to drink too much an suffer undue effects, if you know what it mean... It is available in any grocery store in the juice aisle, next to the prune juice. My four year-old son, my aunt and I have been using it for over two years without complications.

Try making a tea for him with about 1/2T dried basil. But before you do, rub it between your palms to help release the oils. If you need to , use honey to sweeten it up. It's about as natural as you can get. Plus, you can always go to your nearest natural foods store and ask what is recommended, most of them have reference books you can use to look up home herbal remedies for a whole list of ailments.
