We put him on concerta did work, adderall it didn't work and just started him on dextroamphtamien. I hate these drugs. he is not the same. Addrell he was so out of it. thought he was over medicated. I have tried native remides but not strong enough. he has iep at school that is helping but they still want me to try. any one use natural way that helps with attention. he can't follow a task with out a teacher on top of him. if he walks away he wont follow through. he never get into trouble and is clam child. I think there giving me med for adhd he jsut has attention problem. I don't give food with dies either. I watch everything. what other things are out there that are safe. I dont like these drugs.

What can I do next?

I recommend St John's Wort. i am a teacher and one of my students took this and he was a completely different child!

Then take him off the drugs. Kids are overmedicated these days. Try another school that has a better approach to kids that don't fit in the box.

I've worked with kids who were on meds for ADD, ADHD and other problems. In my experience, I believe most of the meds were over prescribed. There are some children, of course, who probably really need the drugs, but most of the ones I worked with seemed like they were much better off not taking meds.
Have you tried dietary changes to see what will happen with good nutrition? Also try just finding things you can do with him at home... activities that will help him develop his attention span. Even just talking honestly with him about his needs in that area and getting him on board with trying to help himself might work.

One thing I noticed when dealing with the kids who were on meds is that the meds seemed then to become a 'crutch'. I recall one little boy whose mom was - like I am - not good at remembering to give the dosage when he was supposed to have it. He would come to childcare and tell us he couldn't behave because his mom had forgotten to give him his pill that morning. We began trying to work with him on the idea that he was responsible for his actions whether he had taken his pill or not, and helped him develop some skills in staying on task. You might want to look for some good therapist who could help you with ways to work with your son without meds, or to wean him off the meds.

Lots of good advice already. Please put him on liquid vitamins you can add to water or juice. You can get at your local vitamin store or order online. They will help, not cure the problem. Kid grocery store vitamins are junk and not easily absorbed. Also have his eyes checked by an actual eye doctor as some parents don't realize the child is having trouble seeing until around age 8 or 9. I am a firm believer that kids are kids and you may notice some of your sons behavior in you or your husband or possibly you can remember when you were kids. It is a big world and if you have a daydreamer it is even bigger. Best wishes from a Grandmother of a wonderful 9 year old daydreamer!

A friend say that Hiruko, a type of Tai Kwan Do, has helped her son's attentions span tremendously!

Hi,

My son who is also 6 yrs old had ADHD and we are trying to pin point something else. My husband and I are doing alternative, like social skills class, my husband and I even took parenting class. He also sees a talking dr. (a therapist). Dr. told us to tap him on the shoulder and put his face so he faces us when talking. I don't give him sweet unless he is good in school. This year he's in 1st grade and he is not doing his work in class, he brings his workbook home. We have good days and bad days but God is good to us.

Good Luck..

M.

A good resource for info is Parents Helping Parents in San Jose. www.php.com

Hi B.,

I am sorry to hear what you are going through.
You can treat your son naturally to get him balanced. I have been attending Children's Wellness Expo's and learning new ways to keep my grandaughter healthy. There is a panel of medical doctors sharing how to stay healthy without using drugs.

If you want more info let me know and I will share with you.

I have helped many people turn their challenges around to have a better life.

Have a great day.

Hi B., I may step on a lot of toes mentioning this, but I heard on the radio the other day that the government has spent 4.5 BILLION dollars trying to prove that any of these herbal rememdies work, and not one has come through. On top of which, they are completely unregulated, so you really have no guarantee what, or how much, you're getting. If you want to stay away from more traditional meds, check out the book _The Nurtured Heart Approach_ by H. Glasser. It is a behavvioral model that helps parents and kids work together. I've never tried it with an ADD kid, but I heard the author lecture and he says it works-- it's worth a try.
