Native American Baby Names (Kiowa)

I'm pregnant and due Feb 25th. My husband and I have been trying to coming up with names. He is Kiowa and we would like our baby's middle name to be Native American. I would like to help but I don't really know any. I've looked online and found some Native American names but hardly any Kiowa names. Does anyone know of any sites I could go to or somewhere I could find Kiowa baby names? Thanks, H. ^_^

What can I do next?

Hi,

When we lived in OK there were active tribes...Cherokee, Apache, Kiowa, etc. They had meetings, get togethers, socials, etc. And, it was all very serious in regards to keeping their heritage and traditions alive. Do you live where he can participate with his particular tribe? Or, 'get the newsletter' if not? I think, perhaps, if he digs, he will locate the national leaders for his tribe and perhaps uncover a wealth of information. I hope this helps. Get him involved in the search! You could do some family tree research from his side and possibly find a last name, which should reflect his heritage, and use that as the middle name. All three of our children's middle names are from our family's past. Have fun and have a good pregnancy!

I live in Oklahoma and I go to the pow wows all the time. there web site is www.iicot.org they might be able to help you out. I myself named my daughter an indian name we are creek and her name is Cheyenne. Well I wish you luck.

H.,

I am 25% Cherokee and my ex is 100% Mohawk. We both wanted to give our children Native names. Our 3 year old daughter is named: Rainy Brook, our son is named Dakota Goyathley (Geronimo's given name) many Native people did not even know this was his name it's soooooooo cool to have named him Goyathley, to have a real Native hero's name is the bomb.

I'm only a quarter Kiowa, but my great grandfather was one of the first Kiowa Baptist preachers on Saddle Mountain. You are in Lawton I see, so if you had time (I'm sure really busy with job, pregnancy and kids to top!) but you could go to the cemetary on Saddle Mountain and find tons of great names. I always liked my great grandfathers name, Lucius Aitsan, or his wife Mabel. I have a book called KIOWA, a book about Isabel Crawfords days as a missionary on the mountain, I'm not sure where to find it but it has lots of Kiowa names.

I found this site and it has some good information as well as a place you can email what you are looking for and they will send you back some sample names. I think names are so important!!
