Naps?!? - Garden Grove,CA
Hey mamas! It's me once again lol. Ok so I totally need help with naps! I have no clue what my DD needs right now. (she's 12 months) We were doing one nap a day but then she always seems so tired about 2.5 hours after she wakes up. So i started putting her down for 2 naps. but she totally fights me on the 2nd one. this is her usual schedule: (with 2 naps)
9am wake up
1130am-1pm nap
try to put her down around 5pm for 2nd nap but she has been fighting me.
930pm bed
When we did one nap her nap was around 2pm. and she would only sleep for 1.5 hours. if i was lucky she did 2hrs. but she would be so grouchy in the morning. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. i'm just so frustrated lol. she sleep 10.5-11.5 hours at night so thats good. but i can't seem to figure out what time she needs to nap. i'm so lost lol. should i try one nap but try doing it earlier? some advice and help would help please. can you post your baby schedules? thanks so much! and sorry for making this long! :)

I agree with some other posters that 9:30 is way too late for bedtime. At that age my daughter was in bed by 6:30 and taking one long afternoon nap. (b/c of my son's kindergarden schedule i had to adjust her nap from 2 to 1)
She's probably fighting the afternoon nap b/c she is over tired. Good Luck!

I'd skip the second nap and put her to bed early. I always put mine down early enough that Dad and I had an hour or two before bed ourselves. Kids were tucked in at 7:30 until they were school age and then it switched to 8.

We used a book called "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" and it helped tremendously when trying to figure out the "right" times for naps. Our son was typically up 7 to 7:30, nap at 9, nap again at 1:30 or so, then bed at 7 or so. He was still taking 2 naps at 15 months, but then we had to transition him to one, since he started day care. The book suggests that earlier bedtimes more naturally work with a child, but I think you can adjust it based on your times. The first nap should be no more than 2 hours after waking up, the second about 3 hours after waking from the second, if I remember correctly. Good luck!

Maybe try to skip the 2nd nap, and do an earlier bedtime. My ODS gave up the 2nd nap right at 1 year, and that's what we did. My YDS is now 11 months and is starting to do better at night with only 1 nap mid day, so he's kinda in transition. I mostly follow his cues for nap, rather than a set time. Some days he still takes 2 naps, but some days only 1. Sounds like maybe your LO is starting to transition from 2 naps to 1, too.

We get up at 6:30, nap from 9:30 till 11:30, 2nd nap from 3:30 till 5 or 5:30, then bed at 9. She is just over 12 months. I have tried to skip the second nap and it's a disaster. This schedule works well for us.

Both of my daughters shifted to one nap around 11-12 months and it was early (like yours, starting at 11-11:30) and was sometimes as long as 3 hours. I think that your bedtime is too late. I would stick with the late morning nap and try bedtime between 6 and 7pm. Slowly that single nap will shift to a shorter, after-lunch nap as she gets older. (And, then eventually it goes away altogether...sigh...!)

She's not ready to transition to one nap yet. I'd start her first nap around 11 and I'd start the second nap around 3. Another thought is to put her to bed earlier at night! 930 is really late. Both my kids are asleep by 8pm and they don't wake until 8 am. Anyway, either skip the second nap and put her to bed for the night around 6 or 7 or move her second nap earlier. Good luck!
BTW I highly recommend "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child!" it's a great book. :)
