Names That Go with Elvin?
My husband and I have a beautiful toddler, turning two in August. We are talking about when to start trying for baby number two. We have a girl's name already picked out, just as when our daughter was born. But we don't really have any boy names that jump out at us.
My husband is named Randall Robert after his father and is actually a Third. He has no desire to make a son a Fourth. My father's name, and paternal grandfather's name, is Elvin. My husband and I have talked about the possibility of naming a son after him. I'm not sure what goes with Elvin though? We are talking about Elvin as a first name OR a middle name. But like I said, what goes with Elvin??
Any suggestions Mamas?
Thanks so much!

So What Happened?™
Thank you Mamas! I got a lot of great ideas for names that go with Elvin. I don't feel as worried about what to name a boy. We could not find a name we liked the first time around so I was relieved when my first baby was born and was a girl. I have no doubt that if our next is a boy he'll love that his middle name is just like Grandpa's. Thanks again Mamas for all the great advice!

You asked, so I'm just going to go with my gut here, although I should probably butt out.
I would go with Elvin as a middle name, not a first. Before reading the ther responses, Tyler Elvin popped in to my head. YOU shouldn't care what I or others think - this is only my opinion. But you asked.
Best wishes whatever you decide!!

OOh. I love the name Elvin! My husband suggested Elvin Jones (after a famous 60's jazz drummer).
Or...
Elvin James
Elvin Mitchell
Elvin Charles
Lots of things could work. And a lot of traditional names actually work nicely if you want a mix of unique and traditional.
And even for a girl, Elvin could be a cool middle name if you want to keep the family reference.
Good luck!

Hello S.
what about scott? Elvin scott has a ring to it. Sounds sophisticated. Or not any middle name. Just go with elvin robert

Please make Elvin his middle name and not his first... it's not a common name today and I can just hear the teasing already.
Recommending names for another person is hard though because we don't know your personality... are you looking for something out of the ordinary? Something common or traditional? Something ethnic?
I would avoid names that end in "n" otherwise it's overkill. Josiah Elvin?

Hi S.,
My husband and I decided to give our sons their grandfathers' names as middle names (Thomas and Daniel, respectively). This worked out well for us.
Be careful, though, of soliciting too much family input on this. My experience with naming children taught me that names are best announced on the birth announcement because, according to my family, it was up to them to name my babies. I was told that my chosen names (William Thomas and Christopher Daniel) were too boring, too long, too old fashioned, too much like British royalty, too many nicknames, too everything! The low point was with my second son when my gram weighed in and decreed that Christopher should have my grandfather's name as his SECOND middle name. I agreed, but only because she's my beloved Gram. My grandfather hated the name (Michael) so much that he legally changed his name the day he turned 18. So, Christopher Daniel became Christopher Daniel Michael.
Beware of acronyms. In 1994, when William Thomas F. was born, the acronym WTF was unknown. Now, as a sophomore in high school in 2009, it's his nickname! [eyes rolling]
And if anyone gets to bold in trying to name your child, tell them to get a puppy so they have something of their own to name and take care of. That quip stopped many in my family dead in their tracks when they crossed the "let's name the baby" line.
Best of luck to you.

I completely agree with Kristen C and love all of her suggestions! When I first saw your post, I thought, wow - that's an awesome name! I really like uncommon names and think that you could use it for his first name! Children can get teased with ANY name so do what makes you happy!
p.s. Go veggie mama! We're a vegetarian family too!

My husband and I were too cheap to buy a baby name book. I don't know the name of the book we read at Barnes & Noble but it gave some rules of thumb to use when naming a baby. If I remember them right, some are:
1. The rhyming test (think potty mouth 3rd grade boys on the playground for the ultimate check)
2. Write it out on a business card to see how it will look when he's older.
3. What do the initials spell? i.e. Boris Upton Good would be B.U.G.
4. How will you spell it? They suggested giving a kid a chance since some spellings are more difficult than others. My name was different and I ALWAYS had/have to spell it. Not that it bothers me much now, but I went to school with alot of girls named Cathy, Debra, Linda, and Christine which I thought meant my name was more 'weird' than 'special'.
5. Don't tell anyone your name. EVERYONE has an opinion on a name for one reason or another. If you love the name you've chosen for your baby you don't have to share it.
That being said, I really like most of the ideas the other moms have posted.
Best wishes for a very healthy baby, boy or girl!

Good Morning S., You sound like a very happy mommy and wife, that's great, also you are planning your family, that's really wonderful as well. The only names I can think of that I think go with Elvin is Anthony, Jerome (I have a son Edwin Jerome) Michale, goes with almost any boy name. I'm curriuos as to your middle name, my daughter's names is S. as well, her middle name is Ranae. In choosing names for our kids I looked in the baby name book at the meanings, cause that was important to me as a young mom, don't know why but it was. My husbands name is Edwin so of course he wanted to name his son after him, as most fathers do, but the name means "best friend to all" our other son's name is Andrew which means "manly" and then S. means
"Listener" fit's her too. our last name is Louis and it means famous in Battle, and my husband and my sons are fighters. I know you didn't want to all of that sorry. If I come up with any more names I'll send them to you, you will probably get a barrage of names. J. L.
