Nails or No Nails?

So, last week I was asking my husband his opinion about my toenail polish. I like to please him so his opinion matters to me. Anyway, in talking about his preference, it came out that he prefers well kept finger nails including acrilics. In the 5 years we've been together, I think I tried acrilics once in the beginning for a few months before having them removed because of the monthly expense. I must admit I don't do much with my nails. We have 6 kids between us and I work part time while they are in school. I never paint them and they often break so they aren't very attractive. I don't have a lot of time to do home manicures and paint my nails on a normal basis. My question is this. If you knew your husband thought well kept nails or acrilics were sexy, would you try them again? He said he thought the monthly upkeep expense is in the budget, so he's on board. It's just a matter of whether I want to start that committment. Last year I foolishly dyed my hair because I thought it would be fun, now I can't get back to my normal hair color and am forced to upkeep the color every month (I have long hair so it requires 2 boxes). It's a committment I regret. Trying to decide if I would end up feeling the same about acrilics.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to those that responded. I think for now I've decided to hold off on getting acrilic or gel nails. I will focus on strengthening my nails and do my best to keep up on manicures. Yesterday I went home from work and gave myself a manicure. I cut my cuticles, shaped my nails, applied a light pink color and even put a small flower sticker on my ring finger nail. I have to say they look much better. This weekend I will look at some of the hardening/strengthening products out there so hopefully they won't break as often as they do now. I'm just not sure I'm ready for the time and money commitment it takes for artificial nails.

My hubby would walk away if I asked him about my nails.

The only comment he has ever made about my nails is that I keep them too long at times. I don't use polish, but I do have long nails.

Will he also watch the kids once a month so you can go get the nails done? If so, and if you like them, go for it.! If you don't even like them, though, don't do it.

I'd try gel nail polish. It doesn't damage your nails like acrylics, dries instantly (which is great when you're a klutz like me), and lasts for weeks and weeks. Very pretty.

If my husband told me that he liked something specific, I'd try to do it. I love him and want him to be attracted to me. I'll work for it because letting myself go isn't fair...he married me when I was dressing nicely and taking care of myself, and I should continue to do so. I expect the same of him.

I've never had them.
I guess my basic philosophy about things like that is that I try to keep things as simplified as possible.
Mani/pedis? Sure.
Adding something else that needs maintenance? No way! Lol

Acrylics? No. I don't care if my husband liked them or not. Regular, professional manis/pedis to keep my natural nails looking great? Yep, I'm on board!

Try these instead:
http://www.kissusa.com/nails/nail_dress/classic_nail_dress

I do them once a week, takes about 10 min total. I get my nails manicured (not fake nails - my nails) about every 3-4 weeks for about 10bucks and use these when I get home. I apply the "nail dresses" and use nail glue on the tips (because I hand wash dishes vs dishwasher it helps them last longer) and clear coat over. I find that they last about a week on my nails. Like I said they take about 10 min once you know what ones to use and they come in TONS of options.

There are MANY brands that make these I simpy prefer Kiss, and Walgreens often has them on special.

I do not like them, they feel too heavy, for me anyway....but if I knew my husband thought they were sexy and was giving me the OK for the monthly expense I would try for a compromise. Granted it has been a good long while since I had my nails done but back when I was having them done I used to get a 'silk wrap' on my own nails and then a French manicure (the pink & white) and they were really pretty and since they were my own nails, only stronger, I really liked them and could 'wear' them that way.

Maybe something like that would work? I would just grow your nails out to a decent length then go in and see what the nail ladies can suggest??

Nothing wrong with doing a little something for your man....as long as it doesn't make you miserable.

I would not do something that is inconvenient for me to do just to please my husband. I would never ask him to do something just to please me.

Not that I don't love him and like to do things for him. If I happen to like it too I'm going to do it, but nothing is just for him, but it's for both of us.

If it's a pain for you to do, why do it? Why make yourself "unhappy" just to please him?

Just something to think about.

I keep my hair on the long side, I usually dye it (new baby has kept me from doing it again) and I keep the "landscape" neat and trimmed. These are things we both like.

I have had my nails done for years. My husband likes it. I like the look, but HATE the time it takes to get it done. I switched over to gel about 2 years ago, but the last 3 times I have gone, the gel has barely lasted a week, where it used to last 3 weeks. Just last night it all literally peeled off. So I painted my nails pink and am going to see how long this lasts. I have ALWAYS had french manicure...the color looks weird to me.

But yes, if my hubby makes a comment about wanting them done again, I'll go get them done. I like it, so if he does too, that's just an added bonus :).

My natural nails don't look good on their own (they are wide and flat, ugh) - so because I like my nails to look nice, I do have a thin layer of acrylic put on over my natural nail to help shape them (I keep them short - fingertip length). Then I have gel polish applied, and my manicure lasts for 3 weeks, totally bullet-proof. 45 minutes every 3 weeks so my nails always look perfect? Totally worth it! And as Heather LP said below, if you suddenly have a social obligation to attend, you don't have to fuss with your nails. That part of your ensemble is already pulled together.

If you regret the hair color, why not go have a professional dye it back to your original color? Then you're done with it.

I would forgo the acrylics and work on nice natural nails. Anytime you have a little downtime, or a watching tv, just get out your emery board and buffer, cuticle cream, and clear nail polish/ strengthener. It shouldn't be too much of a commitment, and you'll end up with lovely nails. Surely your husband would appreciate the effort you've taken without the acrylic commitment.

If you file your nails once a week and put a very light polish on, it will take you no more than 15 minutes tops. Try Esse's Mademoiselle. Very sheer with a hint of pink.

Acrylics are so bad for you and going every two weeks will be way more time consuming and expensive. I'd get a monthly massage instead!

If you already have weak or brittle nails, the WORST thing you can do is get acrylics or artificial nails. They thrash and destroy your nail beds.

I'm not bragging, but I have always gotten compliments on my nails. I don't do anything special, including painting them, but they grow out evenly, etc.
100% natural.
If I break one, I just cut them all off and start over. In a couple of months they are grown out again.

We were getting ready to go to Las Vegas and my husband said it couldn't be a worse time to have cut my nails off. (He liked them long). He gave me money to go get my nails done. My fingertips were so sore afterwards that I could barely use my hands AND I ended up getting an infection and two of my natural nails came completely off. I swore I would NEVER do that again.
Almost all the gals I work with wear artificial nails. It's become a horrible cycle because their natural nails look so bad they basically feel they HAVE to wear the artificial ones.

My advice would be to check into the temporary artificial nails. You can do them yourself, you won't be committed to the fill-ins, and as far as I understand, they don't rip off the top layers of your own nail beds when you remove them. I would try that route first to see if YOU like having longer nails. Some women find they get in the way.

Sally Hansen has great products for strengthening your nails.
Also, shorter nails happen to be in fashion right now.

Just my opinion and best wishes. Do what's right for YOU.

I used to get them all the time. My nails grow quick so I had to go in about every 2 weeks, and it gets expensive. If one of them breaks, then they look bad and you have to go and get it replaced. Such a pain!

Just go into a salon and get a manicure. They will make them look nice, and paint them up for you. Easy, no hassle, and it's cheaper than getting acrylics. And, it doesn't damage your nails. Mine are much thinner than they used to be.

He didn't say that they are his preference, right? Just that he likes them maintained and is cool with acrylic? Can you do regular manicures--natural nail and cuticle maintencance? Keep them cut short, and add some color (his favorite color?) periodically. I'd do it for my husband if I knew that it would be one more thing that he finds attractive about me, especially if it's not a problem for me.

Because I don't like scraggly fingernails, I get them covered so they don't break so easily. I don't know what the stuff is called, but it's the pink powder that they use when they are doing a French manicure with the pink and white powders. I just get my natural nails covered with the pink and keep them looking natural. It doesn't require so much maintenance, redo every two to four weeks, depending on how they look. Instead of having them buffed to a shine that can dull fairly quickly, I have my tech go over them with a brush-on glue (over the powder). I typically keep them cut all the way down, and I get them polished (over the powder) every once in a while.

I've been fighting it lately, but my husband can spring an important social event on me at any moment, and it helps when I don't have to worry about my nails. Sometimes--if it's been a while--I might file them to refresh them, but I rarely have to worry about broken nails with jagged edges. These details make the difference in our minds and in the minds of others when we aren't up for wearing make-up or have to dress down a little because we can't fit into our favorite outfit. What details do you notice about other people that make you think that they've got it together? The common things that people notice are hair and nails (hands and feet, depending on what's visible) and maybe if your skin is dry or moisturized (and how your make-up is applied if you're wearing it, but you don't have to wear it), then upkeep of accessories and shoes (no peeling heels), then the big clothing items.

It seems like such a small thing, but I would do it. You don't have to get acrylic nails to make them look nice. You can get gel polish or a ordinary manicure. I've had simple, thin acrylic overlays done before and they worked well. You can talk to the nail tech and tell her your concerns amped see what your options are. Either way, your get your hands pampered for an hour or so and you hubby will think your hands are even sexier!
As for your hair you mentioned, go see a professional and find out how to get your hair bak to they color you want.

answers from Detroit on

I guess the question should be, do you want them?
My husband likes things, if I like it too, I will do it. If I dont, I wont, and he will think Im sexy no matter what.
I get acrylics because I love them. My nails suck, it takes awhile to paint them and even longer to dry.
When I get acrylics I only have to worry about them every 2-3 weeks.
When I paint them, they look nice for maybe a day and them I have to do it again if I want it to look decent.

I use to just get my regular nails done....then once they grow out I consider getting small designs done men truly never know the difference in what's on top of the nail they just like them to be PNCS (pretty, nice, clean, and soft) when it comes to touching/rubbing on them.

Nope..it would be just one more regular appt. to make among your already hectic schedule. That is nice that he said you can fit it in your budget..something so feminine and foo foo. That is a very good man. Save the money..grow out your nails and occasionally go in for a simple mani pedi.

I do my own mani/pedi at home then occasionally go in for the real dealio. I like the look of painted nails and toe nails in very neutral tones and I know my husband does also. Sometimes I go fire engine red or raisin....and it is hot. So it is a win/win. I would personally not want the upkeep of acrylics...and I don't like the fake look.

Good luck and best wishes.
( But..I do have to add, getting my back rubbed or lightly tickled when my husband's nails are a little longer is heavenly. Maybe that really is what he is looking for....in that case...buy a cheap back scratcher.)
