While I was giving her her second feeding this morning, she projectile vomited, it wasn't just spit up. But, it was not green, and I have not tried to feed her since, I checked her temp. and it was 90.3, which my pediatrician said was normal. But, today is Saturday and the doctor's office is closed. This is my first baby, and I'm very nervous. Please, help me out.

What can I do next?

I would honestly call your doc and if they won't see her, take her to ER to be on safe side. It's just not worth not checking it out, especially with such a little one. Not to scare you but mine had a life threatening illness at that age, docs blew it off, and if I hadn't checked it out we would have lost her.

I used to get worried when my DD was doing this. It can seem like SO much and can shoot across the room, but it is normal. She was probably too full or had some reflux. My DD did this until she was 10 months old. Keep her upright after a feeding and make sure she's burping enough.

Her temp is only 90.3? Did you take it rectally? What's her normal temp? That just seems low.

I would wait and see how she does, make sure she has wet/poop diapers so you know she's not dehydrated. Its possible that she ate too fast or too much.

Also, are you breastfeeding? If so, did you eat or drink something out of the norm last night? If so, that could upset her stomach and explain the vomit.

Could be she over ate. Just burp her a little more often. I am sure she is fine..

If she seems fine otherwise (is having wet diapers, isn't inconsolable or super fussy, isn't acting more sleepy then usual) I would just keep feeding her as normal. If it happens next time she eats I would call the doc again. could be she has reflux which can cause the vomiting. Don't stop feeding her unless your doctor says to. The formula or breast milk is the only thing that hydrates her. At the next regular feeding try to feed her just a little at a time and try to get her to burp more often. But sitting her up with gentle patting or rubbing on her back is better than moving her around a lot or patting too hard. Don't be too nervous, babies do weird things sometimes and it could just be a one time thing. If it happens often then you should get it checked out.

Though not likely, it could be pyloric stenosis in newborns, which usually begins between 2 weeks and 2 months of age. One issue with projectile vomitiong is not a reason for alarm, but if it continues, this is a real possiblilty. The muscles around the lower part of the stomach become enlarge and prevent the passage of food. My husband had it for almost 2 weeks before diagnosis and by that time, he was on the brink of death. Don't worry, if it is pyloric stenosis, you will know it. Your baby will projectile vomit every meal. You can have your baby treated (with surgery) before there is any major health problems.

I hope this was a one time thing!

If you feel uncomfortable, go with your gut. She's so small that it isn't worth the risk. Also, they do not HAVE to have a fever to be ill. My daughter rarely got fevers, and she's pretty much had back to back UTIs because of her issue with her kidneys. At first, her pedi kept blowing it off because she didn't have a fever, but I knew something was wrong. I insisted, and sure enough she had a UTI. It took her pedi some time to figure out that if I brought my daughter in, she got a urine culture. Now, things have worked out, but go with your gut. Doctors are so quick to brush things off as nothing unless you bring an unquestionably dying baby to them.

Keep her hydrated, feed her again and see if she really is sick. It's possible it was just a big gas bubble. Burp frequently not just each side. If she keeps it down don't worry, just watch for fever, etc. The Acute Kids are after hours pedi offices open on Sunday. They can help you with how to keep her hydrated if she did wind up with a tummy bug. Newborns dehydrate very fast, this is really important.

My baby did this too. Luckily the doctor's office was opened at the time. My doctor told me this was not unusual and to keep an eye on him for other symptoms. He never ran a fever, but he did continue to "spit up" according to the doctor. It looked like projectile vomitting to me! I wasn't breast feeding, so we ended up changing his formula 3 times. I would keep a close eye on your baby, keep her hydrated, see if it happens again and call the doctor in the morning.
