My Toes Are Falling Asleep When I Walk!!

Hey wonderful moms! I need help! For a long time now, whenever I walk, my toes fall asleep. It starts from the pinky toe and works it's way along to my big toe. My mom ended up buying me MBT shoes, which are supposed to help with posture, and she thought it would help. Well, now it still happens, but not as fast as before. I recently got a gym membership to get rid of my baby weight. Yesterday I was at the gym and both my feet were practically asleep when I was walk/running on the treadmill. I would have to stop and let the feeling come back before I got back on. I moved to an eliptical machine after a while to see if that would help but it kept happening. I asked my doctor a while back and he just said it's because I was overweight...but honestly, I'm not that overweight. I need to lose some poundage but I don't think that is the issue. Has this happened to any of you ladies?? I really don't know what else to do, besides get another opinion. Thank you!!!

I just wanted to say that my toes fall asleep when I use a treadmill and eliptical machine at the gym. I asked my personal trainer at the gym, the free sessions for signing a membership, and she said it happens to a lot of people. I'm not overweight and this was happening months before I was pregnant with my first child.

My daughter and I both have the same problem. She recently was diagnosed with Raynauds Syndrome and I am sure I would be to if I had it checked out. I would check with a rheumatologist just to be sure there is no under lying problem. Oh and my daughter and I are not overweight at all.

I was watching the Dr. Oz show the other day and a lady asked about numbness in her fingers and toes and he said that it could be that either the blood supply is being kinked off, or a neuropathy, which deals with your nerves. I have attached the link so that you can see what he says about the neuropathy.

This used to happen to me all the time. I used to walk for exercise, but then, when I started jogging, I went to a specialized footwear store (that caters to runners), they did a foot analysis. My usual shoe size is 7 1/2-8, and after that analysis, I ended up with a 8 1/2 running shoe. I explained about my toes going to sleep, and they said that there wasn't enough room in the "box" part (the ball/toe part) of my shoes, so they were pinching off some nerves. Since I switched to bigger running shoes, I haven't had my toes fall asleep once (at least while exercising). If I'm sitting cross legged on the floor with my kids for awhile, that is another story all together! I would recommend finding a specialized running/exercising shoe store and have them evaluate your feet. Good luck!

This same thing was happening to me! My toes would fall asleep and I had a little bit of other foot pain. I too was overweight and I thought it was all related to that. One day I was talking to my mom on the phone and she said "are you sure your shoes aren't too tight?" I know that sounds like such a stupid thing to not realize but I had been a size 8 1/2 since high school and didn't think my feet were growing anymore. Apparently with my 3rd pregnancy my feet grew and sure enough I bought a pair of size 9 gym shoes and it has never happened again!

I hope the answer to your problem is as simple as mine was. Good luck!

I'd ask a different doc. Poor circulation runs in my family... my big toes or pinky toes go numb, my hands & feet are always cold... It could be something as easy as loosening your shoes & as serious as clots somewhere-get another opinion & keep pushing til you get more than "lose some weight".

It happends to me too, and I am not overweight. When your on the machine, pick up your feet a few times during your work out, and wiggle your toes, it helps. Also make sure your shoes are not tied too tightly. Instead of the machines, try jumping rope or stair stepping, change it up...keep your body guessing LOL!!

I have never had it happen but you need to go see another doctor.

This happens to me when I workout and my shoes are the correct size, though that is something you want to have checked. I was told it is due to the way I move though I am told I have great posture so not sure where to go with that. I have it more so on the elliptical than on a treadmill so maybe my feet just do not like me standing up. :)

I have the same symptoms and was diagnosed with Raynauds Syndrome. When it first started happening it was just occassional and just a few toes. Now, 3 years later it has spread over more of my feet and into my hands. Of course, when the doctor first diagnosed me I minimized it because he said it was a circulatory reaction to the cold, but it happened in the summer too! He did prescribe a medication (can't remember name) which I took for a while but have since stopped because I didn't see much result. My recommendation is to educate yourself about Raynauds and decide for yourself what treatment route to go. I choose to just live a healthy lifestyle and get lots of foot rubs from my 6 year old:) And yes, I agree that good fitting workout shoes can make a difference.

A chiropractic adjustment could be tremendously helpful.
Also, your peripheral tissues might not be getting enough blood flow. Do you get toe nail fungus too? Or when you press on your finger nail, does it turn back to pink easily or does it stay white for a longer time? These are both signs that your peripheries are not getting sufficient bloodflow (and nutrients). Very important to address b/c it could be an indicator that your brain is not getting enough blood flow as well.
Send me a PM if you want more info.

You might want to go to a podiatrist. It could be circulation or it could be nerves, maybe. It's not uncommon to get a ball of nerve tissue near your toes, which can lead to tingling and numbness. I know my mom had a problem like that. Anyway, a podiatrist will know what the cause is and will let you know if it's serious or not.

I have the same problem and I am anxious to hear what moms have told you. Mine is only when I am working out and has happened since before I was pregnant and gained baby weight, so I don't think that was the issue.
I would love to know what other moms have told you.
