My Sons SS Was Stolen

Ok so I found out that my son's social security was stolen. I was told to report it through this one website from my state, but is that all I do? I was also told to get an earnings statement . . . my son is 7 months. I don't think he has earned anything. I'm so confused as to what to do!! Help me please.
*I found out from Workforce Services and the website is a Utah set up report a theft thing. But I haven't heard anything from them so I don't know what else to do. I would get a lawyer but I have NO money. I guess tomorrow I'll call the police department. Who would I speak to there??

Many SS numbers are stolen before they are even legally created. Then the infant already has all this on his record when the SS nubmer is issuted. They won't issue another one. You can only get one. There is lots of good information out there. Talk to the county law enforcement; they've been through it before with others and can tell you want to do. Do put a flag on his card with all 3 credit card companies. Good luck.

No! Please, please, go to your local Sheriff or Police Department, and file a police report, then go to the national ID Theft website in Washington and report it there. The Police can give you the address, it escapes me for the moment. Be sure and report it to the Social Security office as well...Notifiy all of the credit bureaus...I know, I know...he is a baby...believe me whoever is using his ID could care less, and they WILL come after you for the money that this creep has run up in bills...I have had to do this, because someone stole a credit card number and I have had a cell phone stolen, and then managed to compromise my husbands SS # on a website. These jerks are sophisticated...so please be careful. I feel sorry for your baby when he becomes a man, he will still be cleaning it up!
Good Luck!!!

You do not need to get a lawyer. Settle down. Report it to your county police service. They will file your complain and will give you the file number in case you need it. Report it to the Social Security Service. I had my ID stolen and realized it when I decided to pay for Lifelock and have my ID protected. They asked for my credit reports that were sent to me and It was how I found about the ID theft. I did what I just mentioned to you and additionally had to send a fax with my police report file to the credit card company that I supposably used to opened a credit card to have a cosmetic dental service done. It was not me, but the thieve. My strongest suggestion is after you resolve the problem get a family package from Lifelock and protect all SS of your family. I did it. Finally, your infant SS was stolen with the purpose of committing fraud. To reestablish a clean credit is difficult to do and takes time. Act quick.

The earnings report will tell you if anyone is using his number to work - it may help track down the thief. BYU has a free legal service once a month or something like that (from the students and sometimes the professors at the law school) - call the J Ruben Clark law school and they should be able to give you more information; BYU's general information number is ###-###-####. The service may be called Legal aid, or that may be another group that does something similar- sorry I can't be more specific.
Having said that, contacting the SSA and the 3 major credit reporting companies is probably the most important thing you can do at the moment, with the SSA being your best (free!) source of information.
Good luck!

Oh my gosh! How awful. You definitely need to report it to the police. Also, you might check out www.daveramsey.com. Look on the right side and there is a link to click under Zander Insurance that says ID Theft Protection. I think I've heard Dave say that they can help even if you weren't signed up for their service at the time his identity was stolen. They might be able to direct you where to go and what to do at the least.
You also might try freezing his credit. Dave Ramsey has talked about it on his radio show and that might start helping now that it's been stolen. I think there is a small fee involved but it might stop new cards/accounts from being opened in his name.
Good luck with this.

I would call the SS office and have them re-issue another one in your son's name.

You do not need a lawyer. The attached is a link from the Social Security Administration that tells you what you need to do for a stolen card.

If it happend to me, I would call the local police department and file a report. Just speak to the clerk who answers the phone, they will guide you.
