Ok Moms I know this is a touchy subject but I need your advise. My son is 15 months old, and from the time his circumcision healed it hasn't "looked" correct. Our pediatrician assures us every well check that everything will function correctly and is functioning correctly but he just have alot of excess skin. My question/concern is, When he gets older and in sports I don't want him to get made fun of b/c his "Hoo-Hoo" doesn't look "Normal". My husband and I are contemplating have a urologist do another Circ but I need some reasurrance from y'all. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I researched the different methods of circumcision before our son was born and decided that the Mogan was the best, we thought, so we had my OB/GYN preform the procedure as no one at the Pediatricians office would do this method. I guess I know why now. I just need some guidance please.

What can I do next?

My son had the same problem. He had excess skin and it kept reattaching. We went to the dr. several times and they would pull it back. We just kept pulling it back at every diaper change and tried to keep some vaseline on it so it wouldn't reattach. He is 4 now and everything is fine. It just took some time for him to grow a little. He didn't need another circ.

J.,

We were in the same situation with our son. At birth, they didn't use the right size of ring and he had A LOT of excess skin. We waited 6 months and he underwent a quick day surgery at Children's to snip the remaining and "fix it up". It now looks completely normal. Let me know if you're interested in our pediatric urologist's name. He was great. The entire procedure lasted about 20 minutes and Caleb had no complications whatsoever, in fact, the following day we headed on a plane out of town for the weekend and he did great!

The same thing happened to our first born. We didn't consider a redo until he was between the ages of 3-4 when he started asking why his looked different then dads. When he was 4 we had a redo. He was so proud of his new look. He did really great after surgery. He really only had about 1/2 day of being down..then he was back to his normal self.

This same thing happened to my son too. He was only 4 lbs. when we had it done so I guess it was difficult to see the little thing. So when he was a year old we had an urologist perform a re-circ. It did fix the extra skin but it left some scar tissue. The doctor assured us that in time the scar tissue would disappear as "it" grew bigger. So maybe check to see how often this occurs before having the surgery performed. It may have been just a clitch for my son. Hope this helps!!

I know how you feel. My son is now 10 months and it seemed he had a lot of extra skin around his and it seemed like as he got older it was starting to grow back over. It was harder and harder the push the skin back to clean. His circumcision was originally done in the hospital. I asked his pediatrician (since I changed from his original) and they had a specialist redo it. They agreed that it was alot of extra skin. Once redone, it looks a lot better. the recovery wasnt too bad either. If you want the information of the specialist I took my son too you can email me at ____@____.com does them all the time. He is located on the northwest side of town right in front of willowbrook mall. I hope this helps.

Hi. I am not the same "KH" who already replied! But, my 6 mo-old nephew just had a re-circ yesterday in Austin. Everything went well and he is recovering fine. It was a hard decision for my medically conservative sister and brother-in-law. They did get several opinions from pediatric urologists. Basic feeling - would not "grow" out of it (or into it), would probably be fine health wise, but just a matter of self-esteem, etc... Good luck!

Slightly different perspective. My brother is not circumcised. I am a nurse, (I assume that is why he came to me with such an intimte question) several years ago he asked me about adult circumcision. He confided in me that he has always been uncomfortable in the gym and he was concerned about girls' reactions when having sex. He was about 21 years old and had apparently had a few awkward moments. After much deliberation he decided not to have it done. Too many people had horror stories about how painful it is as an adult. He does wish that it was done when he was young so he would not remember the pain. He also plans to have it done for his sons if he has any. With that knowledge I struggled with whic method to choose with my son. I have a two year old son that was done with the plastibell. It looks great. I would say talk to a urologist and he can tell you how much difference a re-do would make. Good luck.

You should listen to the Pediatrician. I know it's hard to right now, but I am in the same boat. I have 2 sons, one is 6 and the other is 3, and they both had circs. My 3 yr old's had a lot of excess skin on it and the Ped said not to worry b/c he would grow into it. Of course we have stressed over this for his 3 yrs of life, but he seems to be growing into it. There is still excess skin but it does not look near as bad as when he was a tiny guy. I hope you find this comforting. I would let him decide later in life if he wants to do anything about it:)

Yes, you can have the urologist redo the circumcision without any further problems. Your son most likely will not have ANY problems with this procedure at all. I was a Nanny for a little boy from the time he was 2 months old; he is now 10 years old. Anyway, his Mom is a Pediatrician and the little boys Pedi. not his mom didn't do his right either; it just had too much skin at one year of age. So, she did exactly what you are considering and the baby at age 12 months didn't seemed bothered by it at all. I took care of him, changed his diapers, keep him cleaned and put ointment on it for a while; none of the diaper changes seemed to hurt him at all. He has had nothing further done and no problems. His younger brother was circumcised too and had no problems.

We have not been happy with my oldest son's circ from the start. He is 7 now and I only wish we could have taken care of it right away. For our youngest son our neo used a "ring" that fell off on its own, and result was perfect! I agree that you have it looked at now then later!

I noticed all the previous posts mentioned nothing about the scar tissue and/or curvature that can occur if the circ. is too drastic. After two males in my immediate family had severe (adult) problems with pain and tightness due to scar tissue, the next generation opted for Mogan or no circ. at all. If your concern is cosmetic appearance only, then I would let your SON be the one that decides this issue when he is old enough to deal with it logically. I would also advise talking to more males than females about this problem. We don't 'own' one, so our knowledge isn't first-hand (if that makes sense). Again, you mentioned only about your opinion of what looks correct - there appears to be no medical reason for your concern. If you decide not to have a re-circ. then I would suggest you learn how to teach your son about proper care and cleanliness. Good luck!

We had the exact same problem with our first son. I knew the methods were different, but thought it would all come out looking the same. He was Mogan clamped and it looked very strange to us- different than Daddy for sure. We got it done again at 4 months old with the Plastibell and it looks normal now. Sooooo glad we got it redone. I had a really hard time with that decision, but now that he has a little brother- we got him Plastibell circ'd too- they look the same as most of the boys out there and eachother, and Daddy. I say do it- you will always feel bad about it if you don't and that's a really sensitive subject to feel guilty about forever.

wELL IM SORRY THAT YOU ARE GOING THREW THIS. I WENT TREW SOMTHING LIKE IT. MY SON HAD A REG. CIRC. SO I THOUGHT. BUT WHEN IT HEALD THE EXTRA SKIN KEPT TRYING TO GROW OVER THE WINKIE. AND IT DID NOT LOOK LIKE MY HUSDANDS. SO I WENT TO 3 DIFFERENT DOC. AND THEY ALL TOD ME THE SAME THING. THAT WE COULD NOT GET ANOTHER CIRC. SO I WANT ED TO KNOW WHY THE EXTERA SKIN IS GROWING OVER THE WINKIE? WELL TURNS OUT IF YOU DONT PULL IT BACK AND PUT JELLY TO HOLD IT BACK IT WILL DO THAT. BUT IT WAS KINDA LATE FOR THAT TO WORK SO MY POOR SON HAD TO HAVE SOME STEROID CREAM PUT ON IT AND SLOWLY PULL THE EXTRA SKIN BACK. NOT FUN FOR ANY OF US. WELL THE CREAM LOSENS THE SKIN AND IN ABOUT 2 MONTHS THERE WAS A NORMAL WINKIE. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS GONE THREW THIS. I WISH I HADDENT. MY SON IS POTTY TRAINING AND WE STILL HAVE TO KEEP PULLING THE EXTERA SKIN BACK SO IT DONT START TO GROW BACK AGAIN. IF YOU DONT KEEP IT CLEAN IT CAN ALSO GET SOME STUFF CALLED SMEGMA AROUND IT . ITS SO GROSS. BUT AS PARENTS WE HAVE TO DO GROSS THINGS. I HOPE I DIDNT TAKE UP TO MUCH OF YOUR TIME, BUT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. GOOD LUCK =)

My son was 16 months when we chose to have his circ redone. The same problem, too. He had so much extra skin that he actually looked like he was uncircumcised. The skin ended up growing back together so we chose to have it redone. It looks so much better now and it will be easier in the long run for him to keep clean. If you choose to have it redone, you should do it as soon as possible. The older your son gets, the more painful it will be for him. We went to Dr. Bateman in Plano at the 15th street medical building. He is so awesome and he is not pushy at all. He made it so comfortable for us and for my son and we couldn't be happier with the results. Good Luck!!

Sorry I am just now writing. Our son had a circ done and he has excess skin as well. He has excess, more on his right side. Our midwife and pediatrician said this is normal and that his circumsion looks very good. It might look strange to us now, but he will grow into it. You also need to remember that you want him to be comfortable later in life when he gets a full erection. It will feel better to him and it will feel better to the woman if he has a litlle excess skin. Hope this this helps.

Call me crazy, but no two penises I've seen have ever looked exactly the same - and they all (to me) look like strange little alien projections.

That said, it's a 50/50 circumcision rate right now - so "All the boys in the locker room" no longer look "the same" anyway.

To me, the way to figure it out would be: would I any other form of plastic surgery performed on him at this age, with these risks?

JMO - and all of my boys are circumcised (but none of them look the same)

Just to ease your calms a little bit, this (the following paragraph) is what our dr. told us when we had our son's done:

Circ. is just like plastic surgery: it is cosmetic! Therefore, each and every one is done according to the child's annatomy and the dr.'s preference and no matter what, each one is individual and different(like art). It in no way changes, alters or affects the use of the organ as it is only exterior changes and not interior. It is not medically needed at all and more and more parents are opting to not do it (up to 50% in some areas but typically around 70-80% get it done-Hispanics and areas with high hispanic influence [ie Texas] typically by-pass the procedure). Rarely complications occur from it. Seldom, parents are un-happy with the look and then I (the dr.) would take more off or refer them to a specialist. It is better to take too little off then too much, but since it is "plastic" surgery, there is plenty of room for personal preference. However, as the child grows, even circs. that look at bit "different" tend to "normal" themselves out. Since everyone is different anyways, it becomes less noticable and less of an issue with age.

Now for info from me: Similar happend to my friend whom also had her son's done by the same dr. as did our son's. He told them from the get go (propr to cerc.) that his annatomy was not "typical" but this did not make it "wierd" as we are all different. It would, however, complicate the cerc. just slightly. He did the cerc. with the parent's go-ahead and approval despite the above and the procedure went fine but his "hoo-hoo" is not straight b/c of his annatomy. The boy's parents took him to a dif. dr. a few days later (b/c the dr. that did it was out of the office) just to get it checked since it "looked" odd and that dr. said basicly the same thing as the dr. that did it-it would be fine and level out with age. Then they talked to the dr. that did it again and he said he would be more than happy to re-do it or re-fer them to a specialist but, in his personal oppinion, he would just leave it-it would become no big deal with time. They opted to leave it. He is only 3 mos., so I can't tell you much about how it has changed (since it really hasn't had the time yet), but they continue to see that dr. (he is a generally prac.) and he keeps assuring them that it will be fine and at the very least, they will make it fine if the parents are still unhappy.

If I were you and it really bothers you, I would first talk it over with the dr. that did it. Then, if still unsatisfied, it never hurts to get a second opinion from a specialist. But too, keep in mind, that there is no such thing as "normal" and listen to what the drs. opinions are. If they sencerly (sp?) think it is fine, then I would leave it and let it "grow"-wait it out a bit method! But ultimately, you have to do what you think is best. Just take in mind that there is no "normal" and that things "Change" a bit with age!

Just my opinion with some information from my son's and my friend's situations!

I had the same problem with my son. He was semi-circumcised so we took him to a urologist. The Dr.said that it wouldn't bother him but like you said he would different than about 99% of the other boys in the gym. My husband pretty much made the decision that he be recircumsied. He didn't want him to feel uncomfortable in gym and he also thought he should be like his dad. My son is 21 now. Its seems like he made have been around your sons age when we had it done, I guess the biggest worry is they have to be put to sleep to have it done. But everything worked out ok and I'm glad we had it done because there is so much pressure on kids these days to fit in. Hope this helps. T.

The Mogen method is a great method to use however, it should also be accompanied by the person(Mohel) who is trained to use this method. OB/GYNs and pediatricians are not in this group. They are used to the "paint by numbers" plastibell method or the Gomco clamp which is pretty automatic as well. I will never understand why women let their sons be snipped by an OB who is trained to study vaginas and the female anatomy. At this point I would pursue the second opinion and cutting if need be. No reason to leave the job "undone". I have the number to a great Mohel if you would like to pursue that direction as well. Many times they will do the work even if you are not Jewish.

My son is 21, was not circumcised and has never had a problem.
The "extra" skin which is designed to be there may have an important purpose to their future sexuality. And I'm not sure what the reason (other than cultural habit) is to having it removed.
In any case, being elective surgery, I thought it should be my son's choice and not mine.

If I remember correctly, the Morgan isn't what one considers a 'full' circumcision. It was probably done correctly.

I wouldn't traumatize the poor child by having another one.

I homeschool so I won't have to worry about things like being made fun of in the locker room- how barbaric.
