My Son Is Trying to Sleep Standing Up!

Hi there. I'm in desperate need of advise on helping my son adjust to sleeping in his crib. He is 10 months old and I am trying to get him to sleep in his crib in his own room (until now he had been sleeping in a portable crib in the sitting room adjacent to my master only because I felt his room was a bit colder than the rest of the house. We were able to find a ceiling fan that also heats and have solved the problem with the temperature). Now however he stands in his crib and will cry until he falls asleep. Problem is... he will wake himself up when he falls down or I lay him down and the process starts again. I have tried sitting in a chair where he can see me or sitting on the floor next to his crib and rubbing his back but this did take me 2 hours to get him to sleep. Any and all suggestion would be welcomed!! Thanks again

What can I do next?

I do think you need to stick with it. Some crying should be expected. It might be easier on him, though, if you stay in the room, just putting him back down each time he gets up until he is too tired to fight any more. It may take 2 hours for one or two nights, but then he will understand that you are not giving in and it will be much easier until it isn't a problem any more at all.

Hi M.,
The only way you are going to get him to adjust is to be consistent. I know it is hard to listen to your child cry, but he is going to have to cry it out. If he is not hungry, he is changed, and warm then he is fine. You are not a bad parent to let him cry. I have went through a similar thing with my daughter. Around that same age, she decided it was time to stand and scream instead of go to sleep, and she had always been a great sleeper before then. I tried everything that you have tried until I was just fed up. I decided I was just going to settle her down with our usual book and rocking in the chair for 10 minutes and then I was going to let her fuss. It took 5 nights, and I have not had another problem with it since. I hope this helps and good luck!!

Maybe try putting on music or a nature cd to help him fall asleep.

I read that you used to put him to sleep in a portable crib in the sitting room.. right?

Have you tried putting his portable crib in the room with the other stuff in there? if there is enough room for it.. try it.

It might sound weird, but you changed not only the room he is in, but the bed also. If you have ever travelled or stayed in a new place.. it's hard to fall asleep in a new bed. It just doesn't feel the same.

So maybe the two changes was too much at once. Try changing just the room.. then work on the new crib once he is used to the room.

Best of luck.. and wishes for a peaceful night's sleep.
