My Son Has Stopped Rolling Over

My son was a little late rolling over, but rolled from tummy to back for about a week and then totally stopped. He's trying to crawl now, but gets upset on his tummy and just cries. He doesn't try to roll over which is what he used to do if he didn't want tummy time. Is this normal? He's 8mo now and everyone else with kids his age discovered rolling over and started doing it all the time.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
Congrats on your new part-time position! I recently made the same move. That extra time with your little one is so worth it! I remember that my son rolled over pretty early then stopped for a few months. It was almost as if he knew I wanted to write it in his baby book and then he figured he didn't need to bother with it anymore. Babies are funny and I don't think you should worry one bit about your little guy. They learn something new and then push it aside for a little while. I'm sure you'll be going for your 9 month check-up soon and the doctor can make a better assessment. -C.

My daughter also "forgot" how to roll over once she got good at sitting up. Then she didn't crawl for a long time as she just scooted on her butt everywhere. Then she finally crawled and started rolling over again at about a year old. Now she's walking and running just fine at 16 months. Every baby does things differently. As long as he's trying to get somewhere, that's what's important.

My daughter is now 7 1/2 months old and has not yet rolled over. She is just not interested. She will roll onto her side and arch her back so she can reach different toys. She sits very well but has not shown interest in crawling. She is just a really mellow kid that is not in a rush. But she does show that she is starting to get interested in moving by rocking to try and scoot. Your situation is by no means unusual. I wouldn't be concerned unless the doctor is concerned about his developement.

Hello:
My son rolled over maybe 2 or 3 times tops, he to hated being on his stomach, he would cry and go so mad,I tried all sorts of toys and things so for tummy time (I really didn't push it to much like every thing you read says yours sapposed to)because he hated it so much I would do it for maybe 5 minutes or so I would when he was kicking his little legs in anger I would put my hand where his tiny feet would land (like a little wall)for support that way he would creep accross the floor and helped with his leg mussels, after a while he didn't mind tummy time to much but he still didn't want to be on his tummy, once he got the hamng of that he would not fuss for like the 1st two minutes of tummy time.
now he 2 and I here him tossing and turring in his crib when he goes to bed, little ones learn in different ways, yours is just as unique as the rest of them, I hope this helped GOOD LUCK

Sounds like he is putting all his effort into learning to crawl. It is common for babies to drop one new found skill in favor of working on another. Now that my son is a bit older I notice the same thing happening with other types of skills (words, information, etc). Just keep watching and if you feel he is loosing multiple skills that he had mastered, then talk to your pediatrician. Otherwise just relax and enjoy.

S. -- My son is 9 mos. old. He started rolling over at about 6 mos., but he goes back and forth if he _wants_ to do it or not, lol. He did the same with crawling at first. Some days he'd do it, others he'd sit and cry (even though he _knew_ how to get where he wanted to be). I think it's probably totally normal. Since he's done it already, I'd check it off the list and not worry about it. Is he doing other things? He might just be figuring out some other skill right now. Good luck!

(I work 40 hours a week but I work 4 ten hour days... getting an extra day home with my babe is well worth it. Congrats on being able to do that.)

My daughter was very similar. She rolled over for a little bit and then stopped. She's 10 months old and now seems much more content in standing then rolling over or attempting to crawl. I spoke with my doctor about it during her 9 month check up, and he said that because she is sitting up ok it's nothing to worry about. He also said because she is a large baby, that could have something to do with it. I continued to try to do tummy time, but, usually it only lasted a minute or two before she cried. And as soon as she got frustrated I picked her up. I have noticed in the last few weeks she has become a lot more mobile and I have finally seen her start to roll over again. She's actually sitting on the floor behind me right now, and I glanced back and she was trying to stand up. She had her hands down and was rocking backand forth on her feet. So, I say relax a little bit. Keep trying the tummy time, but listen to your son. He'll come around when he's ready. :)
