My Little Grunter and Her Sleep.

Hello ladies, my baby girl is 7 weeks and only at night does she sound like a p'oed, super upset, 90 year old angry man in pain with her grunting. She scratches her little face and arches her back, (a little colicky I suppose)and gets really fussy but does it while she sleeps. I've been breastfeeding and cutting out different things in my diet to ease what seems to be awfully painful. I've also tried switching to formula but nothing gives. Talking to her pediatrician it seems as though she'll get over it with time, however, last couple of days I've noticed that the big NO NO of her sleeping with me, on me, on her tummmy - she doesn't do it. This solution, for the unsafe obvious reasons, is not the one I was looking for.I keep her on her bouncy when I put her down but sitting up for some reason doesn't ease anything ONLY at night. So now, not only does she only sleep on her bouncy, or on me but she doesn't lay flat anywhere for more than 5 minutes when I try to put her anywhere else. Taking her to visit family or friends always means keeping her in her carseat or holding her. She's still tiny now but I need to hear if anyone has gone thru this and can give me some advice or any suggestions. The grunting only happens when she's sleeping, sometimes a fussy eater, besides that she's a happy baby. I really would love anything you all could give me for support, the whole "it will pass" is just not working for me. I'm wanting us to get her a peacefullenjoy her sleep.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You ladies are amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my concerns. After trying Mylicon drops, calling the pediatrician every other day, cutting out foods, I was really upset that my baby was having such uncomfortable nights. I was really surprised on how many of you suggested the "burrito, swaddling" method that I had to give it a whirl. Considering she was kicking off her blankets when I tried swaddling, I purchased one specifically for that. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was shocked at the results. I can't believe she's sleeping so much. I am very lucky that you all found it in your hearts to take time out and help. I am very grateful for this web site.

M., Have you tried propping the head of her crib up a little so she sleeps at little bit of an angle. We had to do that with my son when he was a baby. His pediatrician is the one who recommended it. she said sometimes babies nasal passages aren't fully developed or the tissues are to big and can reduce the opening when they are lying down. It worked for him and he eventually grew out of it. if you have any question please feel free to contact me back.

It may be her digestion. When we sleep everything slows down.
Here's a website that talks about probiotic supplementation for colic. http://www.freshhealthyuseful.com/2007/02/probiotic-suppl...

My two children had terrible colic when they were little. I wish I would have known everything then that I know and read about now. The swaddle blanket sounds good too.

Have you tried swaddling her at night? My daughter is almost 14 weeks and has been swaddled since we brought her home. At about six weeks we bought the Miracle Blanket because she was getting out of a normal swaddle and from that night on she has been sleeping through the night 8-9 hours very peaceful. Now she is working towards 12 hours a night. It is a bit pricey for a blanket but by far the best baby product we have bought!

We had the miracle blanket! I didn't care how much that stupid thing cost as long as my son stayed wrapped like a little burrito!!! I will say the thing worked but since then I've seen cheaper versions at Babies R Us and even WalMart. My son had GERD/Colic whatever it was for what seemed like forever. We had him on formula and we were giving him mylecon drops before feeding him and that helped and so did Dr. Brown's Bottles. They helped A LOT. A bit of a pain to clean (there's 6 parts to it total) but those parts make a nice vacuum so air doesn't get in there and create gas to start the grunting. The battery operated swing was a blessing to us too.

You have to do whatever gets you through this tough time. My babies also made noise when sleeping, were colicky, however, I did not breast feed. Whether it's sleeping w/you or holding them, for the first few months this is how it has to be so you can get decent sleep. Did you try swaddling? Babies love to be wrapped up really tight just like they were in your belly. A little about me, I resigned as a flight attendant after having my second baby and am in my mid-30s. I was also given the advice "it'll pass" and it does but in the meantime you have to do the easiest thing possible. Good luck!

My son did this too. He is a soon to be 3 year old but started the type of behavior that you are describing at 3 weeks. He had reflux, GERD and was not able to sleep lying down. He slept either in his bouncy or in the swing b/c he loved motion. After trying everything I found that Harvey Karp's book, The Happiest Baby on the Block worked well for his colic symptoms. The 5 S's. The arching is a symptom of GERD, or could be gas so try some Gripe Water which can be purchaed from Sprouts. It helps to calm the stomach. There are some other natural remedies that can be looked into also. Make sure that the laundry detergent you are using is perfume free and chemical free. The scratching of the face could be b/c of irritants in detergents.
Swaddling is awesome for the arms too. That is one of the Ss in Dr. Karp's book.
Good luck!

Just so you know both my kids slept on their tummies in cribs with stuffed animals and a blanket. I have five siblings and all of us slept on our tummies. The only person I have personally known who has lost a baby to SIDs the baby was sleeping on her back on a firm mattress in a crib with no blankets or stuffed animals. SIDs is most often caused by infant sleep apnia and in most cases where strangulation or suffacation are found to be causes they later find a caregiver at fault. If your beautiful baby girl gets a restful pain free night of sleep sleeping on her tum tum I say do it. Just compromise and leave out the toys and blankets.
