I on the other hand had no interest in them really when I was her age. She is ten and is really starting to get into sports. She's in cheerleading, volleyball and this spring will be soccer following fall will be bowling. I'm letting her chose what sports she wants to be involved in as long as her grades stay up and she doesn't get overly tired. I guess my question is.....how do I keep her healthy while in sports? You always hear about these vitamins and sports drinks and what not. I make sure she has all the equipment she needs for each sport so she isn't hurt, but are there better foods out there for her, now that she needs probably 50% more energy? Oops I need to add that she is ten and a half years old. :)

What can I do next?

What I had to do with my daughter was limit sweets and sodas. For snacks we did fruits and veggies. I have never have the sports drinks except when she is at practice or a game. My daughter is going to be 9 next month and has been in actives since she was 4. So my docter said just keeps meals and snacks healthy. Not saying she cant have the junk food every once and a great while. If she starts showing signs of being tired. It probley wont be her food it will probley be she just needs alittle break or time to cut back alittle. You dont want her school work to suffer. So just keep an eye out for signs. This is just alittle advise from a woman who grew up with 4 brothers so sports was a big deal to me. Plus having a daughter who loves them also.

Hi A.. I would check with your doctor, but personally, as a parent (and former athlete), I would recommend against sports drinks, as most of them are plain sugar. She would do better to eat foods high im complex carbohydrates and drink tons of water. I personally relied alot on bananas, apples, nuts, etc for competition. Talk to your doctor, or to one of her coaches or trainers to determine the best foods for her now. It's important to give her the right food to build on, not just a lot of food! Good luck.

Just keep her drinking water. She'll need more calories but I wouldn't worry about a special diet. Make sure she eats healthy foods. Some of the sports drinks out there aren't good for you and neither are the energy bars and what not. Good old fashioned fresh fruit, vegies and protien will be the best for her. She also needs Vitimin D for stronger bones. That way, there's less risk of breakage when she falls. It's great that she likes all these sports. She'll be in better shape when she gets older and she'll have a blast doing it. It feels great to be part of a team.

Plenty of fruits and veggies and milk for her bones. I would send water or gatorade to practices and games. Gatorade helps to replenish electrolytes lost when sweating so that is what we send with my son and step son when they go to practices and games. Espically in the summer. I believe there may be "diet" gatorade if you are concerned about sugar.
Someone else commented on vitamins and fast food. When you are on the go to games and practices that is true, you won't always have time for a healthy meal at home and your favorite burger joint will become a good friend on those busy days.
The sports activities that our kids do are the only sports I watch, but it is great to see them out there giving it their best and enjoying themselves (and being active!)! Enjoy and have fun!

My daughter is 9 1/2 yrs old and has been doing sports for a couple of years now.She does bowling, cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. She just recently stopped doing baseball and dance. I think all the sports drinks and stuff are more made for adults. I just make sure my daughter eats lots of good foods and drinks lots of water.

Well that is something that I think that you should ask your dr about. Depending on their weight and metabolism.

Just make sure that when they are getting their snacks or meals that they are healthy. Apple not a cookie. The more healthy foods that they have the more energy that they will have.

My oldest was in cheerleading and some sports as well. She is now 18. you didnt say how old yours was. But I found all her sports to be great. Water or gatorade are really important. i wouldnt go for the energy drinks. Healthy meals are plenty good for energy. We did find out the more active she got the less periods she had. But thats normal so dont freak like I did! But have fun with it.

Hi mom of 6 id's and two grandbabys, In Des Moines Iowa, We are hardcore baseball family, and dance of course, is a favorite, My recipe is Vitamins, because when you are busy running all the time, you alot of the time have to eat fast foods or junk food, So taking the vitamins will replace all that they are not getting, and during ball season, LOTS gatroade, and with a big family, I buy big quantities at Sams club of gatorade, and they take a bottle to practice everytime they go, I have very healthy kid's I must say. My kid's are ages, 10,10,16,17,18,20 and grand babys are 1 year and almost 7 months, Good luck K. from K. in Des Moines Iowa

Personally, I think it's a great thing that your daughter is into sports as much as she is. Of course, I've been playing sports since I was 4 and didn't stop until after college. I think the healty part comes with the territory. Or at least it did with me and the teams I was on. The coaches always seemed to know what we should be drinking and eating and stuff like that. And the fact that she is active is great for staying healthy!
