My daughter has the flu and a fever. We took her the doctor who gave her motrin and she was great. ^ hours later, when she was to be medicate again, she sreamed and fought. We finally got her to take her medicine but it is such a battle! I have reminded how great she felt after seing the doctor but she wil have none of it. Anyone have any tips or ideas? Please help; she already feels terrible!I don't want to compound her pain.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Fever just broke last night!!! Thank you all soooo much for your kind words and sage advice. While I dread the thought of seeing my daughter so sick again, I am much better prepared. A THOUSAND thank-you's!

Hi L..

I'm not sure how you are tying to give her the motrin, but you might try changing that. For example she might do better if she has more control. With my son, i let him hold the measuring spoon while I poor in the motrin, then he drinks it himself and puts the spoon in the sink. It works great for us. Hope this helps!

My daughter is 2 and takes Motrin and thinks it tastes good. However have you considered seeing if they have chewables? My daughter has to take Claritin for her nose and it's much easier to give her meds in chewable form than liquid. I would try that if I were you.

I have also tried to mix things like that with pureed foods that she likes but that doesn't work very well with her. She can tell that it's in there.

Good Luck!

We fought with our daughter until last year. It even came to the point where she took a sip and spit it on my kitchen floor (all medicine is kept in a high cupboard in my kitchen). Finally, I gave her the little cup with the medicine in it and a cup of water. We explained that if she took a small sip of medicine and then a small sip of water it would help. (Robitussin tastes horrible, even to my husband and I). It has worked beautifully! No more sturggles over medicine!! She is suffering from a pretty nasty cold this week and I bought her some Tylenol multi-symptom cold that was sye free, She was "afraid" to try it (it was totally new for her) and I had her smell it first and it smells like a Grapple (one of her favorite fruits). She then decided that she didnt even need the water to take that one!

Hope that helps!

I don't know if you've ever tried it, but the liquid Motrin has an AWFUL after-taste. You might try "bribing" her with a bit of hershey's chocolate syrup on a spoon for after she takes it.

A spoonful of sugar really does help the medicine go down...

Good Luck,
K.

Mix it with juice. Pick a strong juice like grape to cover the flavor. Just use a little juice to ensure your daughter drinks all of the medicine. Works like a charm.

Like Thea, my advice is to try changing how you give it. You could also try letting her pick the flavor. My daughter will not sit still for the syringe method, but she will drink from a medicine cup. She also won't drink the grape, but likes the orange fruity one.

Hi L.
is there a chance you could sneak it in a little juice? I know would dilute it a bit, but it might be worth a try and or chewables.
My son will take the medicine in liquid form but we usually also have a glass of water in hand as well, this way he can readily rinse his mouth of the sugary taste. Maybe your daughter doesn't like the taste afterall?
