My Daughter Doesn't like to Be Put on Her Back

All of a sudden about a week and a half ago, my 9 month old daughter has started crying when put on her back to change her. It isn't just a little whimper, it's a full-on wail! She never had a problem with this before. She'll start crying as soon as I put her down until I give her something to play with. Then she'll be fine for a minute or so, until I try to take off her diaper. It's almost like she's scared or in pain. I've tried holding her legs differently (just in case I was hurting her) and putting on a larger diaper (in case the leg holes were too small or her belly hurt from it being too tight which it wasn't). I've even tried putting on diaper rash cream if I didn't think it was necessary for a bit. None of these things helped, leading me to believe that she is not in pain. It's not gas, it's not teething. We've given her something for both of these and had no difference. Has anyone else ever had this problem? My daughter is one of the happiest babies I've ever known and always has a smile on her face, except on the changing table when she cries and cries hard. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this, so I can fix the situation. I hate seeing her cry so much for a reason that I can't figure out! Any advice you would have would be welcome.

So What Happened?

Thanks moms for all of your advice! It's not a sinus/ear infection, we've taken her to the ENT and she's fine. I've also talked to the daycare and it doesn't seem to be that either. I've started taking whatever I can off/on while she's standing up and she likes that much better. I think it's just a matter of getting frustrated with not being mobile for one whole minute. She's started fussing when being put into her carseat or highchair too, but as soon as she's in, she's fine. It definitely helps hearing that others have had this issue too, thanks!

My daughter would not let me change her on the changing table since she was about 10 months old. She hated it. I change her on the bed now or on the floor with a blankie under her head. She's fine with that, although sometimes she tries to wiggle out now that she can crawl and move around. Give her a toy, kiss or tickle her tummy, and she should get more comfortable. Good luck.

Have you tried changing her on the floor? Maybe she's just afraid of heights. At this age, they are becoming more aware, so sometimes fears develop.

Hey ma,

its normal, they all end up doing this,

I think it could have something to do with laying down, meaning its nap time. But then again maybe not LOL

I would suggest just taking off her diapers standing up,
letting her run about without a diaper for a few minutes to air out.

I also like to wash poopy and pee bums with a wash cloth,
sometimes wipes can be irritating and burn the area.
A wash cloth is larger and more gentle.

Good luck

My daughter is also 9 1/2 months old and started doing the same thing about 2 weeks ago. The more people I talk to, they all say the same thing about this age. So, I'm thinking and hoping it is just a stage. She just likes to be on the move and always try to turn over and crawl on the changing table. I hope it ends soon but, I don't think it will:)

My son started the same thing around the same time. The neighbors must think we are torturing him! He flips around and screams if I try to hold him down to fasten the diaper.

The only thing I have found successful is letting him stand when I change his diaper (wet ones). He will put his arms around my neck and hold on so that I can change him. He really just doesn't like to be laying down unless he's sleeping! I have asked some of my friends and they have all reported that their kids went through this phase and that after a while it does go away...

Hi B. - is it possible that it's an ear infection or a sinus infection ? My boys have had trouble with those and sometimes lying down is the thing that sets of some of the pain. Likely not - but if she's tugging at her ears some you might have it checked.... ?? Good luck

B.,

I had an answer here, but it erased.

Likely she has a caregiver somewhere that holds her up by the legs when getting changed. It scares her.

Give her hugs as you lay her down to give her her diaper. Don't start until she stops crying. Reassure her.

Reevaluate your caregivers - and have them observed if they are paid daycare.

Good luck, and let me know if that is not it! I love better news.

If you lay a blanket on the floor and change her, does she cry? My third son HATED the changing table and STILL hates the ones in public places because he was scared he was going to fall. I just lay him on the floor now on a blanket and change him and he's fine.

My DS did this and he ended up having an ear infection. Have you had his ears tested?

My son is 8.5 months old and does the same thing, only it is not limited to diaper changes. It is also when he is being put into his carset, highchair, etc. He doesn't quite crawl yet, but can army crawl around really well and prefers to pull him self up to stand at tables, toys, etc. I think it is a stage as I seem to recall my 4.5 year old doing it too and is related to the new ability to move around independently.

Like the woman down below, as soon as he could stand on his own, I started changing my son while he was standing. It just was easier than fighting with him to lay down. I know my little one has a ways to go, so for now i just try to distract him by tickling him and singing to him and telling him that I am just changing his diaper and he can get up in a minute.

My daughter did the same thing. Her doctor witnessed it too and he brought in a collegue to check it out. They both agreed that there was nothing wrong with her back, like I had thought. It was more of a control issue.

I found that telling her "I'm not done yet" when I change her diaper and saying "Good girl" once she lets me finish stopped the issue. I didn't happen over night, but it's still working now that's she's almost 3.

What a confusing situation! Just trying to think outside the box - are her bowel momvements normal... meaning is she constipated and being in diaper change mode is uncomfortable or scary?

Don't feel bad. I think it is totally normal. My daughter has done the same thing from almost the same age. She might have been a little older. Has she recently become mobile? B/c not wanting to be tide down for even a minute may throw her into a tantrum. What works for my daughter would be to sing songs or count. Good luck... my daughter is now almost 2 and I just keep telling her that if she doesn't like me changing her diaper then she needs to learn to use the potty :)

Does it seem like she's in pain? I would try a chiropractor. Mine will see my kids for free during one of my appointments. I highly recommend it.

Sweetie, she's likely crying only on the changing table because she is mad that her mobility has been interfered with! She is a baby on the go and has been scooped up and taken away from doing what she wants - crawling, rolling, pulling up, tasting her toys - for a pesky diaper change. Many babies go through this. She is distracted for a moment by the toy you give her, and then she remembers that she wants to be set free! It's nothing to do with your diapering technique or discomfort, she is mad.

Wait, it gets worse! My 2 year old and I get into full-on wrestling matches just to change his diaper. (which is why I'm starting the potty training process now, my body is sore!) It's completely normal and there's very little you can do other than make it quick if you can!

Is there anything going on at day care maybe? Did she fall, or almost fall off of the changing table there? Just a thought. Good luck.
