Hi. My baby is 4 months old and was tested for Influenza A on 08-mar'2016. She had a fever of 102.3 which came to a control after infant tylonol. The fever broke on the night of the second day. She puked the tamiflu which doctor prescribed. She had only fever and little cough. From yesterday (5th day of the flu) and today she has been coughing and sneezing. Please advise if this is expected. Her fever had dropped but she stared coughing little more now. I am worried. Please help.

What can I do next?

she's very young, and she's had the flu. this is exactly the sort of scenario that requires her pediatrician, not internet advice. there are lots of home remedies that probably won't hurt her (humidifier, steam, keeping her away from pollen or other allergens) but you don't want to give her medications or take extreme actions that have not been sanctioned by her doctor.

Ask her pediatrician. I know adults can cough for weeks after the flu.

I'm not clear if she still has flu symptoms or is recovering. Tylenol will reduce fever. Doesn't mean she is over the flu. A fever that's broken, also dies not indicate she's over the flu. I suggest she either still has the flu or is recovering from the flu. Coughing and sneezing are symptoms for both.

I suggest that an advice nurse is the best person to ask this question.

Flu can last for weeks - it's exhausting both for her and for you too.
Keep a humidifier in her room at night.
Use a bulb syringe to suck the snot of out her nose as often as you can (she'll hate it but breathe a bit easier afterward).
Try giving her the tamiflu a little at a time and not all at once.
Keep working with the doctor.

It can be so scary when a little one gets so sick. I'd call the pediatrician's advice line - I know it's the weekend, but someone will call you back. Let them know that she vomited up the medicine.

A lot of colds and flu can settle in the lungs and cause bronchitis or similar problems, which often have a nasty cough with secretions coming up. Sometimes it's viral and you just have to wait it out, but with a newborn, the doctor might want to listen to her chest and breath sounds. I wouldn't rush to the ER right this second, but I would strongly advise you to call the pediatrician who knows her, or someone else in that practice, whoever is on call.

1. Did you continue with the Tamiflu? Or did you stop once she threw it up? I'm hoping you kept it up - whatever the pediatrician prescribed should be followed. Or call them to see what else you can give her if she won't tolerate it.

2. Ask the pediatrician to explain the flu's progression to you. Did they not do this? At 4 months, the doctor should have told you what to expect.

Maybe you're just wanting to know this is all ok - I get that. I would say if her fever has dropped, that's usually a good sign. But coughs can be concerning. Not so much a runny nose. At 4 months though, I'd get her back in if it's been 5 days. They should be doing a follow up anyhow. Did they tell you when to bring her back in?

agree 100%, you need your pediatrician...not a website. i never had one that young with the flu, but i know in kids the cough can last weeks if there was irritation. other than that idk, but good luck mama...your in for it. i hope she feels better soon.

Some mom's can be pretty brutal towards others when you're just a mom who is looking for some insight. I don't think you are looking for a qualified doctor's response. They hate it when you ask for advice online but yet they answer. I've dealt with flu in an infant before and the biggest thing to watch for is breaths per minute. Learn to count those if you don't know how. The flu takes awhile to get over for adults, it's even harder on infants. Sneezing is normal as is cough unless she is coughing so much it's hard for her to breathe. I understand your need to reach out for insight. If you are really worried follow your gut and take her to the ER. I hope she feels better very soon.
