I need advice. My dtr is constipated and tends to vomit while trying to push out her poop. I've tried Miralax...any other suggestions? She's a picky eater and won't eat raisins/prunes, etc. that willingly...what should i do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your fabulous suggestions! I will make sure I try them all. So far no poop this week yet...but I'll see what happens after I try the different remedies.

My son had the same problem without the throwing up. We mix 1/2 cup of prune juice in his bottle before bed. Works like a charm!

I have tried EVERYTHING for constipation and only found one thing that helped my 3 year old. Khondramul is sold in most drug stores - it is like a grease that coats the intestines and makes the poo coated. It is safe to take everyday and it mixes awesome in milk. I found that getting it at WalMart is the easiest becasue they always have it and some of the other stores do not. My son was on prescriptions, mineral oil, prunes - you name it and this was the only thing that worked. Start out with a teaspoon in milk each morning and it should help!

Apple juice and prune juice can help. Stay away from apple sauce or anything on the BRAT diet (banana's rice apple sauce toast).

Try karo syrup, You know the stuff for baking, give her a tsp.
That should help her.

Try Activia yogurt daily. And/or Benefibre powder in juice or milk daily.
Both work like a charm with my little one.
And watch the consumption of cheese, bananas, rice, apples, etc. - they're all binding.

You said you tried the Miralax., I use 17 grams of Miralax everyother day for my son to get his poop soft so he can not hold it in. You do not want to get it so soft that its runs but keep it soft enough that they can not hold it. Then have her at least sit on the potty after each meal. Apples with the skin are high in fiber. I also add fiber (fibersure) to his diet in his milk in the moring. It is a struggle for us and them but keep a level head and take some deep breaths! It will pass like all things :) Find foods that are high in Fiber is the best way to get them to go. Popcorn is high in fiber, avocados just do a little research and you will be suprised what you can find. But the Fiber Sure added to the milk or juice does help. and I did find the Miralax to work the best out of everything I have used to help my Son get the poop out! :) Hang in there

Water, water and more water. That is the best thing to soften the stool. Did you know that horses can get constipated. It's
called an Impaction. And, it's life threatening to a horse.

The solution is the same water and electrolytes. Keep away from
anything with high sugar. If you can get her to drink Pedilite that would be excellent. When I get dehydrated, I drin Pedilite and I'm 60 years old.

Many smiles

Hi, Have you tried Mineral Oil? I've given it to my daughter occasionally. It has no flavor but it is greasy. It helps things slide out. I don't remember how much to give but you can ask the pharmicist. They sell it in Rite Aid. It generally works in about an hour. Hope this helps.

Juice and lots of fruits and veggies should help. Two things that always work for my son...blueberries and red peppers.

You could try a glycerin suppository, if she would let you. May not be the best solution if this is happening frequently. Not sure if this is a one-time problem or a routine problem.

my son was the same way, and his doctor told me to use Miralax. It's safe and not habit forming, and you ween her off gradually and then try to get her to drink prune and apple juice mixed. Just check with your pediatrician first. It worked for my son, and he now has no problem without the Miralax, and he drinks the prune/apple mixture. Good luck!

Oatmeal is a wonderful source of fiber, and apples sliced into chips, not apple juice. Also do not be afraid to give her something to help it along perhaps a baby suppository. I have had to use them on my 15 month old, used to suffer regularly because of medication he was taking. But make sure she is drinking pleny of water, and get some bulk into it so it doesnt pack so tightly, (that may sound nuts but believe me it happens) I am including a link for you with some definitions and suggestions for you, just copy it and paste it into your address bar..Good luck..

Any non-binding fruit or fruit juice will help. Apples and bananas are NOT good choices because they are binding, but try strawberries, grapes, melons, oranges etc.

Also 100% fruit juices may help. Add in some mineral oil. Ask a pharmacist or dr. for appropriate amount. This was recommended to me by our Pediatrician.

In addition to staying away from apples and bananas, stay away from white food; rice, pasta, white bread. These bind as well. Give her whole grains; oatmeal, whole grain breads, etc. Try beans; baked beans are kid friendly.

Load up on veggies too.

Good luck.
