My 8 Year Old Has a Lump on His Scapula/Shoulder Area

My son noticed a lump on his upper back today. It is very close to his trapazoid. It is very painful for him and it is raised enough that you can see it, but it doesn't stick up very far. We are going to take him to the doctor on Monday to have it checked out. Does anyone have any ideas of what it might be??? I am a bit worried about it.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your advice! It helped take some of the stress off before we saw the doctor.

We went to the doctor to have it checked out and she said that it is in the lymph node and she did feel a few more there, but didn't find anymore in the other lymph nodes. We are going to keep an eye on them for a couple of weeks to see if there is any change. If they change, then she will order blood work and a chest xray. I pray that they go away or don't change!

He is active in GoKart racing and had an incident last weekend. She said he may have a bit of whiplash and that is where the pain is coming from. She said the whole muscle was tender to her touch not just that area. I guess the sore muscle is what brought the lump to his attention. We will see...

Could just be a swollen lymphnode. I sometimes have painful little lumps like that and the doctor says that is what it is. Good luck.

I agree with the others that it bcould be any number of haarmless things. A sebacious cyst is basically like a pimple. Sebum is the oil that our skin sevrets, therefore, sebacious cyst. They can be extremely painful and tender, but they are pretty harmless. When the oil gland gets irritated or blocked, the oil builds up deep within the skin, and can hurt like the dickens. Some of them need to be lanced to relieve the pressure, but it's best to check with a doctor about that.

It could be a boil (ouch!), an ingrow hair (also ouch!), or something along those lines.

Does the lump seem to be in the skin, or does it seem like the skin is covering it? If you can, move his skin to see if the lump stays put (then it's under the skin), or if it moves (in the skin). My son had a lump on his collarbone when he was about 6 years old, and we had a big scare. Our pediatrician sent us to a pediatric oncologist to have my son tested for cancer, but the lump disappeared on its own before his test results came back (negative for bone cancer). The oncologist suspected that it might have been a bruise on his bone from rough play with the other kids or something equally benign. Whew!

Take your son in to see the doctor to find out what this is. It will help both of you sleep better, and if it's the first sign of teenage acne to come, you'll be prepared to recognize it when the time comes.

Best of luck, and keep us posted.

It sounds like an inflamed lymph node. My nephew had one on his leg and it had to be drained. It was painful but not a big deal.

I have a raised lump that is slightly painful on my shoulder/back. Mine is a sebacious cyst. It must be removed. I hope your son is okay!

It might just be a cyst. All that is, is a blood filled sac which can be drained or removed. They are painful but sometimes with medication they will not hurt as bad. Sometimes they just shrink and go away on their own. Anyway it is better to have it checked out than to let it go. Good luck.
