My 4 Year Old Snores!

My son, who just turned 4 last month (Dec), has always been a loud sleeper. In other words, since he was an infant he always slept breathing loudly and deeply. Well, only recently have I noticed how loud his "snoring" has gotten. Does anyone else have a child who snores? Is this something to be concerned about? Goodness, it has kept me up at night!

So What Happened?

Thank you, Moms, for all the feedback. First of all, I never even heard of adenoids before - and didn't know tonsils can cause snoring! Second, I also learned from you all that night tremors can be associated with enlarged adenoids or tonsils. (My son would often have night tremors the same nights he slept loudly.) Well, interestingly, my son stopped snoring altogether!! It's strange how it coincided with when I reached out to y'all for some advice, ...like he knew. But now that I know better, I'm going to continue to observe his breathing habits while he sleeps, because he still tends to sleep loudly. Thanks again!

Hi...my daughter has been snoring since she was 2 month old (she is now 7 month old). I knew it was not normal so I took her to an ENT and they discovered she had enlarged adenoids and they recommended they be removed since she was so young and was breathing through her mouth. Also...she suffered from more ear infections than normal so they also put in some ear tubes. Maybe you might want to have him seen by and Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist. Pediatric ENT was great with my kid...Dr. Cressman was my baby's doctor. I have heard great things about Dr. Orobello too.

I would suggest having him checked for allergies. My daughter snored a lot and later we found out she has allergies.

That sounds really cute. I think we, as mothers, worry about everything. If they sleep soundly, we worry. If they snore, we worry. Just ask his doctor.

snoring is not much to be concerned about. is he breathing properly or does he stop breathing and wake himself to breath? in other words, does he have sleep apnea? this is something to be concerned about.

my son snored LOUDLY - he could compete with his father. Dad had sleep apnea on one side of me and baby boy had the same thing on the other side of me. i talked to an ENT. He recommended that we had his tonsils removed (they were entirely too large for a child his age - found out it runs in the family for the males). after his tonsils were removed, the snoring and apnea stopped.

so it is possible his tonsils are too large for his body.

First let me tell you , I am in no way a doctor, but I have been taking classes to obtain my A.S Degree in Medical Assisting and there are recommendations in my current text if this is a problem for your child i.e; mouth breathing children who snore should be evaluated for adenoid enlargement an assessment for the adenoids, tonsils, nasopharynx, and oropharynx. Hope this helps out:)

you already have a ton of advice. I just wanted to reassure you to follow your gut and be concerned. My son had his tonsils and adenoids out at age 2.5. He always snored and at that time he was starting to get more colds and sleep apnea was worsening...
since the procedure, No snoring, no sleep apnea, very pleased with the results.
Good luck to you and Yes, once again...Follow your concerns:)

I would talk to your childs ped. or if your insurance doesn't require a referral to a specialist, then I would make an appt with a pediatric ENT. I don't think it is normal for a child to be snoring, in fact snoring is typically the sign or symptom of something else even for adults.

My stepson snored horribly and would sweat terribly in his sleep as well. After consulting his ped and an ENT it was determined that his tonsils and adenoids were actually causing a partially blocked airway, which made his breathing loud (snoring) and difficult (sweating) when sleeping. They were removed and he hasn't had the problem since.

Either way, I would definately make an appt and bring up your concern. He can not be getting quality sleep if he is snoring like an old man....

Best wishes for you and your son!

My now 5 yeaar old always breathed heavily and then at about 2-3 the snoring started and it got louder. I vcould also hear him stop breathing it seemed and then he would cough and start snoring again. Needless to say at his 3 year appt the doc said his tonsils were large but he could still grow into them so they gave it a year. Last year at his 4 year old visit I mentioned it again and they were shocked out how large they were. He went to an ENT and they removed the tonsils and adenoids. He had sleep apnea too caused by all the blockage. He is now a healthy 5 year old and sleeps great. Definitely have it checked out with an ENT. I wish I had pushed at 3 to have them out then.

Have you talked to your pediatrician about it? My best friends daughter was the same way and it was finally determined that she needed to have her adenoids removed. It was a surgical procedure, but it solved her snoring problem immediately. She was 4 or 5 when she had the surgery. Good luck and talk to your doctor! :)

My oldest, now 5, always snored! That is until they took out his adenoids. They were enlarged and kapt him from breathing well. He was 3 when they removed them. I would see an ENT to see if he is having issues with them. It is a quick and easy surgery and they are up and running the same day at this age.

Good luck!

Go to a pediatric ENT and get an xray of his adenoids. They probably need to come out. That's one of the first questions we were asked when I saw an ENT. Does your child snore or are they a loud eater? It's probably the adenoids.

Hi L. (beautiful name!),
He might be fine, but he also might have enlarged adenoids. My daughter used to snore very loudly and we took her to an ENT specialist (Dr. Hotchkiss) who discovered she had to have he adenoids taken out. This procedure only takes a few minutes, but they do need to be put to sleep. It's an outpatient procedure. My daughter's were so enlarged that they were growing into the nasal cavity & obstructing her breathing. Once they were removed, the snoring ended & her appetite increased. When kids don't breath as well, they get tired while chewing; I hadn't known that & I was always bugging her to eat more. Now she eats with gusto & has peaceful nights!
