My 4 Year Old Is Suddenly Having Nosebleeds All the Time

We moved into our new house in April, in May my son who is 4 started having nosebleeds, they were infrequent at first one a month but lately they are happening daily. I took him to our Dr and he said buy a humidifier for his room ( they occur at night alot) and put vaseline in his nostrils twice a day. Any other advice??? It scares him ALOT when it happens and all the blood he swallows makes him throw up. It's not even winter yet and I'm having to use a humidifier...it's FLORIDA...don't we have enough humidity already?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks to everyone for their advice and I will be taking ALOT of it and using it. We went in to the DR he said my son's nose looks very irritated (probably from picking) and also put us on a daily vitamin that has more Vitamin C. We are going to try the Vaseline and Humidifier for a few weeks and see how it goes, if they continue we are going to do some further testing. Also, some people had asked, our house is brand new, so I don't believe mold could be a problem, but that is a very good point. It could be something inside the house causing it, we might go stay with my Mom or something but, I want to see if these other things help first so I don't do too much at once and end up confused as yo what was the right thing.

Thanks to All,
J.

I have no experience with this but just guessing at the time frame, I'd be suspicious of something in the house. Can you stay at family or friends house for a long weekend and see if his nosebleeds stop? If not, maybe have a family "vacation" and go to Amelia Island and stay in a bed and breakfast and enjoy some time away. There are lots of chemicals in new carpets and varnish on trim etc, that may be causing his mucus membranes to go haywire. Might be worth a try.

J.... That is very scary for your 4 year old and I am sure for you too. The only thing I could suggest is an air filter... I am with you on the humidifier... I don't see how that could help. BUT an air filter would take pollen, dust, pet hair, etc that may be contributing to the aggrivation. The Wellness company I work for has the very best in air filters. You can call me at ###-###-#### ask for M. or Paul. You can view it at www.mynikken.com. This air filter is the best on the market. My sister has allergies that require her to take shots to control them. When we visited her with the air filter, she didn't need shots, meds or tissues the whole week. For the first time since she moved to Florida, she could breathe. It was neat. She is buying one soon. Just a thought. Good luck with your son.

Nosebleeds are a sign of a vitamin C deficency. Purchase some vitamin C chewables and start giving them to him. This information was taken from a book by Adelle Davis "let's Get Well". It is a cheap remedy and should work. My oldest got nosebleeds and we used the vitamin C and ended up doing a good multiple vitamin every day plus extra C and they stopped. Vitamin C is water soluable so it would be very hard to overdose. You can't lose anything by giving it a try.

Sincerely,
Deb

I'd be suspicious of the timing, too. When we moved into our newly built home, we had to rush our son (10 months-old then) to the hospital because his face swelled up so much from the new carpet. They had to give him Benedryl and a breathing treatment. I wasn't thrilled to move into a newly built home (I'm one of those natural, nontoxic, obsessive Moms) due to all the chemicals from the carpet, the cabinets, the paint, etc.
Another cause could be iron-fortified vitamins. If he happens to take those, you might cut back to every other day and gauge things from there.
I'm so sorry you're going through this. I have an almost 4 year-old who would be terrified and throwing up, too (same one who had the carpet reaction above). My heart goes out to you and your little guy. Best of luck.

Hi,
Since they are happening daily, I would definately follow the advice of getting out and seeing if it happens outside your house. A little weekend vacation or something like that. The timing is just too much to overlook. I really don't see how the humidifier would help since this has been happening all summer and not just recently. Humidifiers haven't done us any good because it is naturally so humid here, even in the fall. The vitamins and air purifier are a good idea, but I really think that establishing that it is something in your home is really important first. If you do just happen to "fix" the problem and still not know for sure what is was that was causing it, then who know what else is going on that you just aren't showing syptoms of. Do you know background on the house? Sometimes, older people even here in FL, don't use the air all that much. That just leads to mold, mold, mold! If you take your son out and his nose bleeds stop, then you know you need to get serious testing done. I feel so badly for you both and i hope this gets resolved!

It's been really dry lately , especially for Florida. That could be a big part of it... yes, we live in FL and it's humid, but not as of late... so that shift can contribute to nosebleeds. I get them when it's really cold.

And yes, the humidifier will do really well in helping that. Also, make sure he's not picking his nose. That's the first thing my ped. asks her patients when they start complaining of nosebleeds.

The mold thing could be something you'd want to look into also... couldn't hurt.

Out of my 3 sons, two have the nosebleed issue ( 6 and 3 year old). They get it when it is very hot, or even sometimes in the cold .. sometimes it also happens if they are picking their nose .. Vaseline is certainly great idea .. I will follow the Dr. advice ..it happens to us in the night also .. makes me upset to do so much laundry ( their clothes, bedsheet and pillow covers etc..) But my kids are so used to .. they will take the ice and put it on if it is the day time ..
And like other said .. check for mold and if you can, go to vacation or friends' house and see if that change stops it .. then it is possibly something in the house

To help with your son not being so scared when he gets his nosebleeds is to give him a red washcloth that way he can't see all the blood.
