My 3 Year Old Has Had a Cough for 9 Months!

My 3 year old daughter has had a cough for 9 months! Sometimes it gets worse depending if she is congested. She had a deep cough for a couple of months and then it went to a dry cough. When it seems real bad I give her dimetapp cold and allergy. The medicine helps a little bit, but doesn't get rid of the cough. I don't know what to do. Help! Any ideas?

What can I do next?

It sounds like allergy induced asthma. My daughter was diagnosed three years ago (she is 7 now). Her dr out her on allergy meds, zyrtec(oral) and flonase (nose spray) as well as asthma control inhaller, and a resuce inhaler. I check pollen levels everyday, as well as air quality (one of her triggers is smog), As soon as she shows any signs of allergies I put her on her meds. We have been very lucky that we have it well under control and she can do everything outside that she wants to, though we do have to watch her if we are out in very cold weather.
I would make an appointment with your childs doctor to check for allergy induced asthma.
Good luck

Hi T.,

This seems to be a commom problem today in our homes. There is so much dust, mold and particles in the air that we do not see that cause several health challenges that our children are picking up today. I found putting my granddaughter in a wellness home changed all her symptoms from cough, headaches, growning pains, sleep challenges and more all disappeared. It all starts in our home.
I would start off with a good air filter in your daughters room. That will help so much. You have to be careful as some of those air filters have Ozone and that produces a toxic gas.

My daughter has allergies and we just bought an air purifier for her room. She gets congested a lot and gets a mild cough along with that sometimes. We found the Vicks on the Chest works really good.

Sounds like asthma and/or allergies.

Did you ask her pediatrician? My 4 year old had a similar problem. He had a cough that did not go away. His pediatrician diagnosed him with asthma. It runs in our family so I was not surprised. I have asthma as well. She prescribed him albuterol and also gave us a nebulizer for treatments. He finally stopped coughing. His asthma will flair up mostly during winter but other than that he is a healthy boy.

Bianca is right! A cough that lasts that long is usually a sign of asthma! My son is asthmatic, we have it under control now, Thank God!

I say get her in the the ped and see what they say. Good luck hon!

I would go to an allergist and check her on any food or seasonal allergies, my daughter had the same when she was two and I ended up finding out everything about all of her allergies, once her diet had been adjusted she was fine, Good Luck to you, C. S
