My son has acid reflex and has been on 2 different medications for it and on similac alimentum and nothing is working. We have to feed him up right then keep him sitting up for an hour and all the doctors tell us is he'll grow out of it. Out of no where my son will shoot puke out of his nose thenhis mouth or the acid comes up and he starts choking and arching back. Its killing me to see him go through this but theres nothing else we can do the doctors say. Does anyone have any advise. Someone mention something about whole milk and that child never had an episode since but he wouldn't get all the nutrients. Help please

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

There is a product that Melaleuca makes called Florify. I don't know if you know the company or not. But I have been taking this for my acid-reflux since it came out a few years back.

It is good flora for the intestines. It works beautifully!
I also use it for my crohns disease.

The other thing to do is raise the mattress where his head is, feed him while he is in the sitting position. When it's nap time, have him sleep in the up-right position.

It's helped us!

Okay, hear me out. I am a very "investigative" mother. I don't do anything without checking it out first and really finding out all the information I need to make an informed decision. I have read many stories of acid reflux and have learned a lot. I am expecting another baby soon and my first son had acid reflux. This time around if it happens again, I am taking him to a trusted chiropractor. It is not the "bone crunching" that it is for adults. It is a very simple and gentle procedure and has a very high success rate. I am hoping you at least look into this because it could give great relief to your little one. I wish that I had known about it with my first son. Just call some local chiropractors and get some info on it - it doesn't mean you have to do it, but you will have some new information to think about.

Both my kids had it pretty bad like your son. My doctor had me give them Enfamil with AR. The AR is added rice allowing the formula to stick to their stomach lining and than stay down. They were also on Liquid Zyntac two doses a day and that really helped. I am not sure what meds you have already tried but that is what workd for us. The other thing with my son was he was allergic to dairy products and that was part of his problem also. I know that it is frusterating, hang in there.

Hang in there first and foremost! It is very hard to watch and go through. We went through this with our son. We too did all the medications and different formulas until we went to a pediatric ENT. She put his on medicine but also did a scope and found out where the problem in his system. She then adjusted his medication for that specific area and over the course of 2 months (I know sounds forever) he no longer threw up- I mean AT ALL!!
The procedure did not hurt him- it was a tube that went up his nose and down the back of his throat. You could tell he was uncomfortable but not in pain.
As for the whole milk, we had talked to the ENT about that too. She suggested not to because like you said, they do not get the nutrients they need at such a little age and then you will be supplementing with something else anyhow.
Also, my friends little girl went to a chiropractor and it did do some good. A friend of mine now is a chiropractor and she said sometimes it is just the way the neck is position that it does not hold things down like it would if it were adjusted correctly.
I see you are in Milwaukee, the ENT we saw was Dr. Valerie Flannery. She is WONDERFUL!!! So sweet, gentle and attentive!

My son also had some trouble with acid reflux. I took dairy out of my diet (I exclusively breastfeed) and now he only has occaisional spit up. It may not be an issue for your son, but it may be worth a try.

Having a reflu, baby is such a challenge. I know, my oldest had reflux, aswell as a neighbor and my niece. What meds is your son on? My daughter was on Reglan and Zantac, my niece and my neighbor both were on Prevacid and amoxicilian. All of us saw reflux specialists. My daughter was much better around 5 months old and I breast fed her. My sister used a soy formula for my niece and my neighbor found the carnation good start worked best for her little girl. The two bottles that we found between the three of us was Dr browns and the playtex nurser, the one with the drop ins. My neighbors little girl had to have surgery for her reflux and my niece had to have her meds up until a year. Just a little note.. when you give solids, sweet potatoes seem to upset the reflux and for constipation give pear juice it is the least acidic. Keep a journal of how your child is doing this will let you know what you need to change. I wish you strength and paitence, I know how challenging a puking screaming child can be. You are doing a great job as a mother, just keep asking questions of your dr., and you will find a solution.

When your son is choking and stomach acids are coming out his nose, you need to be concerned, especially with the arching and pain he is going through. I would wonder whether he is aspirating that vomit into his lungs. I am a speech pathologist and those are some of the symptoms that we look for before doing a swallow study. I would recommend that you request a consult with an ENT, a Speech/Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist that specialize in swallowing. You might benefit from a swallow study.

my son had reflux and horrible gas problems. i eliminated all dairy from his diet (including breastmilk), and he improved dramatically. You can take dairy out of your own diet if you want to keep breastfeeding. I couldn't get myself to quit dairy completely, but even reducing thr dairy in my diet helped some while I was still breastfeeding / weaning him.

also, how many doctors have you seen? get a 3rd or 4th opinion. might even want to try a doctor in a different location then the ones you've already seen. next town over or something.

Both of my kids were "puker's". They never called it acid reflux, but that has been 12 years. I thought it would never end, but it did. It truly seemed like they were losing everything they ate, but they continued to grow, so the doctor just told me to be patient. By the time they were a year old, both of them were over it. Hopefully that will happen with you. Do not give your baby whole milk until he is a year old. It's not good for babies! Be patient and carry a lot of towels, etc. with you for clean up!

My son had it so bad that he dropped off the charts and refused to eat. One thing that we did not try but have heard about recently is giving Lactobacillus. It comes in several diff. strains and one particular strain is supposed to be especially beneficial for infant reflux. The lactobacillus is called BioGaia - you have to order it directly. Its $36.00 free shipping in a cold 2 day shipping. 1 bottle lasts about 1 month if you do it daily. 877-776-0101. My girlfriend is using it with her reflux baby and has had alot of success. I have another baby on the way and am going to try it if that one has reflux. My son did grow out of it when he was about 14 months but he was a puker as well and I know how disheartening it can be. Good Luck it does get better.
